Sensory and motor thresholds of transcutaneous electrical stimulation are influenced by gender and age.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (ES) is a therapeutic procedure used in rehabilitation. However, the effectiveness of it depends on sensory responses to pain and motor control in neuromuscular recruitment, considering the differences related to gender and age of the subjects treated, as well as the intensity and frequency of ES. OBJECTIVE: To determine the threshold of sensory perception (TSP) and the threshold of motor response (TMR) in young and elderly individuals of both genders. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: General community. PARTICIPANTS: E

Effect of vaginal electrical stimulation on female sexual functions: a randomized study.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a common problem that may be encountered in the interruption of normal sexual functioning in the sexual response cycle. Women with a pelvic floor disorder who scored low on the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) showed an improvement in their sexual life following treatment by vaginal electrical stimulation (VES). AIM: The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of VES in women with FSD without a predominant pelvic floor disorder or urinary incontinence. METHODS: Forty-two women with FSD were randomly allocated to VES and placebo

Prevention of post-herpetic neuralgia using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster (HZ) and is difficult to treat. The role of antiviral agents and nonpharmacologic procedures in preventing PHN is not entirely clear. Recent retrospective study showed that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may completely prevent PHN. The aim of our study was to identify predictors for PHN and evaluate the treatment with antiviral agents and TENS. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter prospective, randomized intervention study in patients with a new onset of HZ. Immunocompromised patients

Postural responses to electrical stimulation of the vestibular end organs in human subjects.

A multichannel vestibular prosthesis that delivers electrical stimulation to the perilymph of individual semicircular canals is a potential new treatment modality for patients with vestibular deficiencies. Most research in this field has evaluated the efficacy of this approach by its ability to reproduce eye movements in response to head rotations. Our group has developed such a device and implanted it in four human subjects with intractable unilateral Meniere's disease. This allows us to evaluate individual semicircular canal contribution to the control of balance and posture in human subject

Vestibulodynia: synergy between palmitoylethanolamide + transpolydatin and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the effect of palmitoylethanolamide + transpolydatin combination in patients with vestibulodynia undergoing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy and to confirm the effectiveness of TENS also in a domiciliary protocol. The study is based on the premise that palmitoylethanolamide + transpolydatin combination may contribute to a down-regulation of mast cell hyperactivity, which is believed to be responsible for the proliferation and sprouting of vestibular pain fibers and the associated hyperalgesia and allodynia. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Individual-dependent effects of pharyngeal electrical stimulation on swallowing in healthy humans.

The present study tested whether electrical stimulation increases the number of voluntary repetitive swallows in humans. In addition, the potential of initiating both voluntary and involuntary swallows was compared using electrical stimulation. Fourteen normal male adults were instructed to perform repetitive voluntary swallowing as quickly as possible over 30 s, and the number of swallows was counted with and without repetitive electrical stimulation (80% of maximal tolerated intensity; 0.1 ms in pulse duration; 30 Hz) of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, or laryngopharynx. Although

Long term efficacy of gastric electrical stimulation in intractable nausea and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: Although the efficacy of gastric electrical stimulation has been reported in short-term studies, there is a lack of data on the long-term improvement of nausea and vomiting by gastric electrical stimulation in patients with delayed or normal gastric emptying. METHODS: Thirty-one patients were implanted at our centre for medically refractory severe and chronic nausea and/or vomiting. Patients were evaluated at baseline, 6 months then 5 years after implantation (mean follow-up 80±4 months) using a symptomatic and quality of life scores. KEY RESULTS: Amongst the 31 patients, 4 were

Low current electrical stimulation upregulates cytokine expression in the anal sphincter.

AIM: Stem cells are an emerging treatment for regeneration of damaged anal sphincter tissues. Homing to the site of injury can be potentiated by stromal derived factor 1 (SDF-1) and monocyte chemotactic protein 3 (MCP-3) expression. The effects of electrical stimulation (ES) on upregulation of these cytokines were investigated. METHODS: The anal sphincter complex of Sprague Dawley rats was stimulated with current of 0.25 mA, pulse duration of 40 pulses/s, pulse width of 100 μs, and frequency of 100 Hz for 1 or 4 h. Sham was created using the same needle which was inserted into the anal sphinc

Patient tolerance of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in the presence of orthopaedic implants.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) may help reduce the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the postoperative total hip and knee arthroplasty patient. However, discomfort associated with stimulus may reduce patient acceptance of NMES as therapy. The aim of this study was to determine if patient comfort and tolerance of NMES was affected by applying stimulation in proximity to an orthopaedic implant. There was a concern that this may cause a concentration of current around the metal which could result in hypersensitivity of NMES and reduce its effectiveness. Twenty patients took

Emotional and social behaviors elicited by electrical stimulation of the insula in the macaque monkey.

Evidence from a large number of brain imaging studies has shown that, in humans, the insula, and especially its anterior part, is involved in emotions and emotion recognition. Typically, however, these studies revealed that, besides the insula, a variety of other cortical and subcortical areas are also active. Brain imaging studies are correlative in nature, and, as such, they cannot give indications about the necessary contribution of the different centers involved in emotions. In the present study, we aimed to define more clearly the role of the insula in emotional and social behavior of the

Novel application of GI electrical stimulation in Roux stasis syndrome (with video).

BACKGROUND: About one-third of patients undergoing a Roux-en-Y anastomosis develop Roux stasis syndrome, likely because of disordered electrical conduction. GI electrical stimulation has been previously used successfully in the management of postsurgical gastroparesis. OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic placement of temporary electrodes and GI electrical stimulation in the management of severe Roux stasis syndrome in a patient with esophagojejunostomy and to determine whether the patient would be a candidate for surgical permanent electrode placement. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Academic medical cente

Eye movements in response to electrical stimulation of the lateral and superior ampullary nerves.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, we demonstrated that it was possible to elicit vertical eye movements in response to electrical stimulation of the posterior ampullary nerve. In order to develop a vestibular implant, a second site of stimulation is required to encode the horizontal movements. METHODS: Three patients with disabling Meniere's disease were included in the study. Before a labyrinthectomy via a standard transcanal approach was performed, their lateral and anterior ampullary nerves were surgically exposed under local anesthesia through a procedure we recently developed. The attic was opened,

[Recovery of consciousness by electrical dorsal column stimulation in brain injury patients].

Treatment with electrical dorsal column stimulation was performed in 7 cases of diffuse axonal injury, 2 cases of brain contusion and 1 case of hypoxic diffuse brain damage. After inadequate response to various treatment modalities, each patient was implanted with a spinal cord stimulation system. The effectiveness was assessed using a standard scoring system which consisted of state scale and reaction scale (the society for treatment of coma). Both state scale and reaction scale were considered to improve in 4 patients after dorsal column stimulation. In 5 patients, the effectiveness of dorsa

Cranial electrical stimulation improves symptoms and functional status in individuals with fibromyalgia.

To investigate the effects of microcurrent cranial electrical stimulation (CES) therapy on reducing pain and its associated symptoms in fibromyalgia (FM), we conducted a randomized, controlled, three-group (active CES device, sham device, and usual care alone [UC]), double-blind study to determine the potential benefit of CES therapy for symptom management in FM. Those individuals using the active CES device had a greater decrease in average pain (p = .023), fatigue (p = .071), and sleep disturbance (p = .001) than individuals using the sham device or those receiving usual care alone over time

Detection of pulse trains in the electrically stimulated cochlea: effects of cochlear health.

Perception of electrical stimuli varies widely across users of cochlear implants and across stimulation sites in individual users. It is commonly assumed that the ability of subjects to detect and discriminate electrical signals is dependent, in part, on conditions in the implanted cochlea, but evidence supporting that hypothesis is sparse. The objective of this study was to define specific relationships between the survival of tissues near the implanted electrodes and the functional responses to electrical stimulation of those electrodes. Psychophysical and neurophysiological procedures were

Effects of electrical stimulation on House-Brackmann scores in early Bell's palsy.

ABSTRACT Limited evidence may support the application of electrical stimulation in the subacute and chronic stages of facial palsy, yet some physiotherapists in South Africa have been applying this modality in the acute stage in the absence of published evidence of clinical efficacy. This preliminary study's aim was to determine the safety and potential efficacy of applying electrical stimulation to the facial muscles during the early phase of Bells palsy. A pretest posttest control vs. experimental groups design composed of 16 patients with Bell's palsy of less than 30 days' duration. Adult p

The influence of orthopaedic implants on patient tolerance of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES).

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a potential deep vein thrombosis (DVT) preventative measure that is often over-looked. NMES could be used postoperatively in conjunction with pharmacological prophylaxis to further reduce the incidence rate of DVT following orthopaedic surgery. However, the use of NMES in the recovery period following orthopaedic surgery on patients with metallic hip/knee implants has not been tested to date. The presence of a metallic implant may interfere with the NMES generated electric field causing hypersensitivity at the implant site. This may essentially li
