Solid Polymer Electrolytes for Advanced Lithium Batteries: Decoupling Ion Transport, Engineering Interfaces, and Enabling Sustainable Manufacturing.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising materials for next-generation lithium batteries owing to their inherent safety, mechanical flexibility, and compatibility with advanced cell architectures. However, their practical implementation remains constrained by low room-temperature ionic conductivity, solid-solid interfacial resistance, and limited manufacturing scalability. This review critically examines recent advances in SPEs, with particular emphasis on fundamental Li+ transport mechanisms and the molecular factors governing ionic mobility, as well as strategies for decoupling ion tr…

First-principles determination of ionic conductivity in crystalline and amorphous LiNbCl6solid-state electrolytes for lithium batteries.

Solid-state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity are key to advancing solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Among ternary halides, LiNbCl6has demonstrated some of the highest ionic conductivity reported to date. Here, we use density functional theory andab initiomolecular dynamics to model both crystalline and amorphous LiNbCl6and to relate structure to ion-transport performance. For the crystalline phase, the optimized lattice constants and angles agree well with experiment; however, a small positive decomposition energy (∼0.01 eV atom-1) and imaginary phonon modes indicate that the crystal…

Short-range correlation effects at molecular level in the electrical double layer of imidazolium-based electrolytes.

The nanostructure of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) is known for its contribution to their unique bulk liquid properties, especially the alkyl chain length effect in the 1-alkyl-3-methylimdazolium cation ([Cnmim]+). In this study, a constant potential method for a charge development simulation of a supercapacitor model using [C3mim]+, [C4mim]+, [C6mim]+ and bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide anion ([NTf2]-) was carried out. The multi-perspective analysis revealed that each RTIL behaved differently and that alkyl chain length prominently contributed to the electrical double layer (EDL)

Stabilizing Lithium-Sulfur Batteries in Carbonate Electrolytes via DODT-PEG Interphase Engineering and Ultramicroporous Carbon Confinement.

Stabilizing lithium-sulfur batteries in carbonate-based electrolytes requires simultaneous control over sulfur behavior and interfacial chemistry. In this work, we present a cooperative strategy that combines a poly-(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-derived ultramicroporous carbon (UMC) sulfur host with a 3,6-dioxa-1,8-octane-dithiol -poly-(ethylene glycol) (DODT-PEG) copolymer electrolyte additive to address these challenges in a unified manner. The ultramicroporous structure of UMC physically confines sulfur species within subnanometer pores, limiting polysulfide formation and outward diffusion, …

Thermal runaway mechanism of LiFePO4 battery electrolytes: a molecular dynamics and density functional theory simulation study.

LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries are widely used in power and energy storage applications due to their high safety, but their large-scale applications are still constrained by the thermal runaway problem, and the mechanism of electrolyte thermal stability has yet to be elucidated. To deeply understand the behavior of LFP battery electrolytes during thermal runaway, this study uses a commercial mixed-solvent electrolyte system as the research object and adopts the method of combining molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) to systematically analyse ionic migration, solvation structur…

Defect engineering of metal-organic frameworks via a dual-ligand strategy for enhanced solid-state electrolytes.

A dual-ligand strategy is reported for engineering coordination defects in Cu-BTC/HCTP solid-state electrolytes through regulation of the BTC/HCTP coordination ratio. The optimised defect concentration generates an open, nanosheet-stacked hierarchical structure with abundant open Cu sites, promoting Li+ transport. Consequently, the optimised Li@Cu-B4H8 electrolyte delivers a high ionic conductivity of 1.26 mS cm-1, a Li+ transference number of 0.74 and outstanding cycling stability.

Molecular Dynamics of Heteroatom-Doped Graphene Electrodes and Hybrid Electrolytes for High-Performance Ionic Liquid Supercapacitors.

Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are advanced electrochemical devices for energy storage and have attracted strong interest due to their outstanding properties. The energy storage properties are closely related to the electrode/electrolyte interface interaction. The microstructure of the electrode surface can make a significant impact on the EDL structure. Here, we investigated boron (B), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) doping in graphene electrodes coupled with ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations under the constant potential method (CPM). The results …

Synthetically accessible naphthalene-based rigid-core electrolytes as membrane-active antibacterial agents against drug-resistant pathogens.

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) underscores the need for antibacterial scaffolds that act through mechanisms distinct from those of conventional antibiotics. Conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs) are membrane-active antimicrobials, although stilbene-containing representatives can present scaffold-specific challenges associated with alkene stability and synthetic accessibility. Here, we report a naphthalene-based rigid-core electrolyte (RCE) platform that removes the phenylene-vinylene linker while retaining potent antibacterial activity. The RCEs were accessed through a two-…

Intercalation of Li + vs Na + Ions in AlOOH Thin Films: Toward Low-Cost Solid-State Electrolytes.

This study explores the influence of ionic incorporation via immersion in LiCl and NaCl on the structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of AlOOH thin films synthesized by chemical bath deposition. X-ray diffraction reveals that LiCl treatment induces the formation of lithium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide phases, a transformation absent in NaCl-treated films, which retain the pristine AlOOH structure. Scanning electron microscopy shows pronounced nanoflake growth in LiCl-treated films, while NaCl exposure yields negligible morphological changes. X-ray photoelectron spectrosc

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to liquid fuels: Mechanistic pathways and surface/interface engineering of catalysts and electrolytes.

The high energy density of green synthetic liquid chemicals and fuels makes them ideal for sustainable energy storage and transportation applications. Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) directly into such high value-added chemicals can help us achieve a renewable C cycle. Such electrochemical reduction typically suffers from low faradaic efficiencies (FEs) and generates a mixture of products due to the complexity of controlling the reaction selectivity. This perspective summarizes recent advances in the mechanistic understanding of CO2 reduction reaction pathways toward liquid products a
