Positive and negative emotional contexts unevenly predict episodic memory.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the recognition of faces with neutral expressions differs when they are encoded under different emotional contexts (positive, negative or non-emotional). The effects of the emotional valence context on the subsequent memory effect (SME) and the autonomic responses were also examined. Twenty-eight participants performed a betting-game task in which the faces of their virtual opponents were presented in each trial. The probability of winning or losing was manipulated to generate positive or negative contexts, respectively. Additionally, the partic

Abnormal respiratory-related evoked potentials in untreated awake patients with severe obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnoeas generate an intense afferent traffic leading to arousal and apnoea termination. Yet a decrease in the sensitivity of the afferents has been described in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea, and could be a determinant of disease severity. How mechanical changes within the respiratory system are processed in the brain can be studied through the analysis of airway occlusion-related respiratory-related evoked potentials. Respiratory-related evoked potentials have been found altered during sleep in mild and moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, with contradic

How does a short history of spinal cord injury affect movement-related brain potentials?

Brain plasticity following spinal cord injury (SCI) has been studied by a wide range of neurofunctional techniques, which tend to have low temporal resolution or overlook cognitive preparatory processes. This study tried to overcome both limitations by recording the movement-related brain potentials using an experimental task somewhat similar to the contingent negative variation paradigm. The aim was to look for amplitude or topographic distribution changes at an early stage of the SCI. Hence, the brain electrical activity of patients who had a clinical history of less than 6 months of paraple

On the potential clinical relevance of the length of arousals from sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess, in individuals referred for evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea, the potential clinical significance of brief versus longer arousals from sleep. METHODS: Full-night polysomnographic tracings from 100 patients referred for evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea were analyzed to delineate the duration of each arousal event. These data were then correlated to the patient's subjective perception of sleepiness as estimated by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). RESULTS: A significant relationship (p < .0001, r(2) = .167) was noted between the frequency of the longer

Electroencephalographic spectral power in writer's cramp patients: evidence for motor cortex malfunctioning during the cramp.

We investigated cortical activation as reflected in task-related spectral power (TRPow) changes in 8 writer's cramp patients during writing on a digital board and during isometric contraction and compared them to those of 8 age-matched healthy subjects. Scalp EEG was recorded over the contralateral primary sensorimotor area (SM1(c)), and from the ipsilateral sensorimotor area (SM1(i)). The electromyogram (EMG) was recorded from the Extensor Digitorum Communis (Extensor), Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (Flexor), and First Dorsal Interosseous (FDI) muscles. We analyzed (1) handwriting performanc

Pulse-synchronous eye oscillations revealing bone superior canal dehiscence.

Superior canal dehiscence syndrome is a newly recognized syndrome characterized by vertigo and nystagmus induced by sound (Tullio phenomenon) or changes of middle ear (Hennebert sign) or intracranial pressure. We report on a patient with bilateral superior canal dehiscence syndrome who presented with unusual manifestations including pulse-synchronous vertical pendular nystagmus and Valsalva-induced, up and counterclockwise-beating jerk nystagmus. These unusual symptoms may be a clue to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of superior canal dehiscence syndrome. Abnormal communication b

[Selective stimulation of the equilibrium organ using monochromatic near infrared].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was, to establish, if a selective thermal warm-stimulation using monochromatic near infrared radiation (NIR) in healthy persons, patients with chronic otitis media (chronic mucosal inflammation) and after radical surgery of one ear shows quantitative or qualitative changes of the nystagmus reaction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Healthy persons (n = 3), patients with a large central defect of the tympanic membrane (n = 5) and after radical ear surgery (n = 6) were examined. In healthy persons a stimulation with monochromatic NIR (lambda = 980 nm) of several areals of

Effects of IV and ICV hypocretin-1 (orexin A) in hypocretin receptor-2 gene mutated narcoleptic dogs and IV hypocretin-1 replacement therapy in a hypocretin-ligand-deficient narcoleptic dog.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Using two different canine models of narcolepsy, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of hypocretin-1 on cataplexy and sleep. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Intracerebroventricular administration of hypocretin-1 (10 and 30 nmol per dog) but not intravenous administration (up to 6 microg/kg) induced significant wakefulness in control dogs. However, hypocretin-1 had no effect on cataplexy or wakefulness in hypocretin receptor-2 gene (Hcrtr2) mutated narcoleptic Dobermans. Only very high intravenously doses of hypocretin-1 (96-384 microg/kg) penetrated the brain, to produce a short-

Cerebellar ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 1: clinical and genetic studies.

Ataxia with ocular motor apraxia type 1 (AOA1) is an autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxia (ARCA) associated with oculomotor apraxia, hypoalbuminaemia and hypercholesterolaemia. The gene APTX, which encodes aprataxin, has been identified recently. We studied a large series of 158 families with non-Friedreich progressive ARCA. We identified 14 patients (nine families) with five different missense or truncating mutations in the aprataxin gene (W279X, A198V, D267G, W279R, IVS5+1), four of which were new. We determined the relative frequency of AOA1 which is 5%. Mutation carriers underwent detaile

Neurotoxic N-methyl-D-aspartate lesion of the ventral midbrain and mesopontine junction alters sleep-wake organization.

The dorsal regions of the midbrain and pons have been found to participate in sleep regulation. However, the physiological role of the ventral brainstem in sleep regulation remains unclear. We used N-methyl-D-aspartate-induced lesions of the ventral midbrain and pons to address this question. Unlike dorsal mesencephalic reticular formation lesions, which produce somnolence and electroencephalogram synchronization, we found that ventral midbrain lesions produce insomnia and hyperactivity. Marked increases in waking and decreases in slow wave sleep stage 1 (S1), stage 2 (S2) and rapid eye moveme

BAER, EOG, MRI and 3-D MR angiography correlates in a case of Locked-In syndrome.

A case of Locked-in syndrome is reported with correlation of BAER and EOG with MRI for localization and identification of brain lesions, and 3-D MRA and 2-D gradient echo MR imaging, a non-invasive new diagnostic modality for confirmation and visualization of vascular pathology. There was thrombosis of the basilar artery with extensive infarct of ventral pons and lower mid-brain. The patient had ocular bobbing. This eye movement in its classical form consists of irregular vertical oscillations, the fast component being downward with complete absence of horizontal eye movements. To our knowledg

Homicidal somnambulism: a case report.

A case of a homicide and an attempted homicide during presumed sleepwalking is reported in which somnambulism was the legal defense and led to an acquittal. Other possible explanations including complex partial seizures, dissociative state, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and volitional waking behavior are discussed. The evidence supporting the probability that this act occurred during an episode of somnambulism and sleep-related confusional arousal is reviewed and weighed. This evidence includes personal and family history of somnambulism and related disorders; neurological, psychi

Effects of unilateral loss of vestibular function on the vestibulo-ocular reflex and postural control.

Long-term recovery from surgically induced unilateral loss of vestibular function was studied in 14 patients. Seven patients underwent surgical extirpation or section of the vestibular nerve, and seven patients underwent labyrinthectomy without vestibular nerve section. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and postural control were evaluated preoperatively and monitored for up to 4 years postoperatively with use of pseudorandom rotation (combined sinusoidal frequencies from 0.009 to 1.5 Hz) and moving platform posturography. Immediately following surgery all patients showed minimal reductions in

[Biofeedback. I. Current status of its clinical application].

The aim of this article is to restate the question of the clinical application of biofeedback and its prospects after having defined it. After the huge success that biofeedback has known, some decantation is occurring. One is stricken by the absence of methodological closeness of too many studies, in this field, which very much limits the conclusions one can make presently. The best and most reliable results have been obtained by the biofeedback training of electromyogramme (elimination of subvocalization in reading, direct paralyzed muscles training, tension headaches treatment). The results
