Relationships between dimensions of emotional experience, rumination, and nonsuicidal self-injury: An application of the Emotional Cascade Model.

OBJECTIVE: The Emotional Cascade Model posits that nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) functions to distract from cascades of intense negative emotion and rumination. We investigated the moderating role of rumination in the relationships between reactivity, intensity, and perseveration of emotion and NSSI. METHOD: University students (N = 992) completed self-report measures of self-injury, emotional reactivity, intensity and perseveration, and rumination. RESULTS: Together, the dimensions of negative emotion were associated with NSSI, but none contributed unique variance. For positive emotion, re

A mixed methods examination of emotional expression and its impact on emotion regulation effectiveness in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Emotional expression (i.e., identifying and labeling emotion using specific words), is theorized to reduce negative emotion and facilitate emotion regulation. However, it remains unclear how individuals with borderline personality disorder express emotion, and whether this influences their emotion regulation. This study examined whether: 1) emotional expression in borderline personality disorder differed from healthy controls based on word valence, emotionality, and vocabulary; and 2) whether such characteristics predict emotion regulation effectiveness across self-r

Eye gaze and facial displays of emotion during emotional film clips in remitted patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant emotional reactivity is a putative endophenotype for bipolar disorder (BD), but the findings of behavioral studies are … fearful facial expressions during all film clips. This was accompanied by less positive self-rated emotions during the winning and happy film clips, and more negative emotions during the risk-taking/thrill-related film clips. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that BD is associated with trait-related abnormalities in subtle behavioral displays of emotio …

Attachment and emotion regulation: A person-centred examination and relations with coping with rejection, friendship closeness, and emotional adjustment.

Guided by attachment theory of emotion regulation (ER), the current study utilized a person-centred approach to identify clusters of individuals that differed in their attachment representations and ER, and further examined individual differences in socio-emotional functioning based on these profiles. Participants included 658 emerging adults (M = 19.9, SD = 2.7, 65.5% female) who completed surveys measuring responses to rejection, friendship closeness, and emotional maladjustment. Five clusters were identified: secure regulated (19%), disorganized unregulated (21%), anxious unregulated (16%),

Investigating the role of beliefs about emotions, emotional suppression and distress within a pain management programme for fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to explore the relationships between beliefs about emotions, emotional suppression, distress and global impact (i.e. the extent to which a patient's symptoms impact their life) in a longitudinal design with patients who are taking part in a pain management programme. METHODS: A total of 40 participants with fibromyalgia took part in pain management programmes at multiple sites as part of their usual care in the National Health Service. Measures of beliefs about the unacceptability of experiencing and expressing emotions, emotional suppression, distress and global…

Emotion Regulation in Generalized Anxiety and Social Anxiety: Examining the Distinct and Shared Use of Emotion Regulation Strategies.

Objective: According to the transdiagnostic view, emotion regulation strategies are common among emotional disorders. Despite the vast majority of studies demonstrating the common role of emotion regulation strategies in emotional disorders including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD), distinct functions of these strategies are largely unknown. So, the aim of the present study was to assess the distinct and shared use of emotion regulation strategies in individuals with GAD and SAD symptoms. Method : Participants were recruited from a community sample of Tehra

Difficulties regulating emotions mediates the associations of parental psychological control and emotion invalidation with borderline personality features.

Extant research has supported a connection between socialization in childhood and difficulties regulating emotions. The biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD; Crowell, Beauchaine, & Linehan, 2009; Linehan, 1993) suggests that emotion dysregulation is a core mechanism underlying the extreme behaviors, mood instability, identity disturbance, and relationship instability observed in BPD. The present study investigated the impact of socialization factors related to emotions, parental autonomy support, parental psychological control, and childhood trauma on BPD features in a nonc…

Cognitive emotion regulation in children: Reappraisal of emotional faces modulates neural source activity in a frontoparietal network.

Emotion regulation has an important role in child development and psychopathology. Reappraisal as cognitive regulation technique can be used effectively by children. Moreover, an ERP component known to reflect emotional processing called late positive potential (LPP) can be modulated by children using reappraisal and this modulation is also related to children's emotional adjustment. The present study seeks to elucidate the neural generators of such LPP effects. To this end, children aged 8-14 years reappraised emotional faces, while neural activity in an LPP time window was estimated using ma

Nightmare sufferers show atypical emotional semantic associations and prolonged REM sleep-dependent emotional priming.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate whether nightmare (NM) sufferers exhibit an abnormal network of emotional semantic associations as measured by a recently developed, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-sensitive, associational breadth (AB) task. DESIGN: NM sufferers were compared to healthy controls (CTL) for their performance on an emotional AB task containing positive and negative cue words both before and after a nap with REM sleep. AB was assessed in both a priming condition, where cue words were explicitly memorized before sleep, and a non-priming condition, wh

Impact of childhood emotional abuse on neocortical neurometabolites and complex emotional processing in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: The rostral prefrontal cortex (RPFC) is involved in reflective thought processes such as self-knowledge and person perception. We hypothesized that childhood emotional abuse, which is disruptive of emotional regulation, would differentially impact neurometabolite concentrations of the RPFC, and related neocortical areas, in adults with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) versus healthy controls. METHODS: GAD patients (n=16; females=11) and medically healthy volunteers (n=16; F=10) were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), specifically the emotional abuse categor

Intergenerational Transmission of Emotion Dysregulation Through Parental Invalidation of Emotions: Implications for Adolescent Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors.

We examined parent emotion dysregulation as part of a model of family emotion-related processes and adolescent psychopathology. Participants were 80 parent-adolescent dyads (mean age = 13.6; 79 % African-American and 17 % Caucasian) with diverse family composition and socioeconomic status. Parent and adolescent dyads self-reported on their emotion regulation difficulties and adolescents reported on their perceptions of parent invalidation (i.e., punishment and neglect) of emotions and their own internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Results showed that parents who reported higher levels of…

Pubertal changes in emotional information processing: pupillary, behavioral, and subjective evidence during emotional word identification.

This study investigated pupillary and behavioral responses to an emotional word valence identification paradigm among 32 pre-/early pubertal and 34 mid-/late pubertal typically developing children and adolescents. Participants were asked to identify the valence of positive, negative, and neutral words while pupil dilation was assessed using an eyetracker. Mid-/late pubertal children showed greater peak pupillary reactivity to words presented during the emotional word identification task than pre-/early pubertal children, regardless of word valence. Mid-/late pubertal children also showed small

The relation between social anxiety and hedonic activity remains poorly understood. From a self-regulatory perspective, we hypothesized that … positive events was lowest on days when they both were more socially anxious and tended to suppress emotions and highest on days when they were less socially anxious and more accepting of emotional experiences. Irrespective of dispositional social anxiety, participants reported the most intense positive emotions on the days when they were both least social …

Adolescent emotion polyregulation flexibility: An ecological momentary assessment of emotion regulation contingency and links to perceived success.

Adolescents often report using a repertoire of strategies to regulate their emotions. However, global characterizations of strategy use provide limited insight into the dynamic processes of everyday emotion regulation (ER). It remains unknown whether adolescents can use multiple ER strategies simultaneously within a given emotional event and adjust strategies flexibly as their emotions shift, namely, emotion polyregulation flexibility. Leveraging the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index to quantify sequential changes in both emotions and ER strategies within and across days, we examined whether ado…

Maternal emotion socialization and emotional functioning among Black adolescents: the role of perceptions of mother as a secure base.

Black youth face racial inequities in their communities that translate to more severe consequences for their displays of negative emotions than their White counterparts. Researchers propose that a balanced approach to emotion socialization, combining emotional support and suppression of youth's displays of negative emotions, engenders Black teens' confidence in their caregivers' availability to provide comfort, connection, and protection in times of need (i.e., perceptions of mother as a secure base). We examined associations among mothers' responses to Black teens' distress, teens' perception…
