Surgical approach to cardiac papillary fibroelastomas.

The routine use of echocardiography has led to an increase in the diagnosis of cardiac papillary fibroelastomas. From 1990 to 2004, 10 cases of papillary fibroelastoma were observed, nine of which underwent successful surgical excision with valve repair or replacement and without major complications. One patient presented with an asynchronous lesion requiring repeat excision. Surgical excision of papillary fibroelastomas is safe and curative, and carries minimal morbidity. A review of the current literature suggests that symptomatic cardiac papillary fibroelastomas should be surgically removed

Congenital heart defects in cats: A retrospective study of 162 cats (1996-2013).

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and distribution of congenital heart defects in cats presented at two referral centers in Sweden between … hat each accounted for 0.6% of cats: double chamber right ventricle, double outlet right ventricle, endocardial fibroelastosis, dextroposition of the aorta, persistent right aortic arch, and pulmonary atresia. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of congenital heart disease was 0.2% of the total number of patient cats, and 8% of cats diagnosed with heart disease. Ventricular septal …

Surgical pathology of atrial appendages removed during the cox-maze procedure: a review of 86 cases (2004 to 2005) with implications for prognosis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia. Some patients are managed surgically (Cox-maze procedure) with rem … e AF patients, left atrial appendages (LAA) were larger and more likely to show fatty infiltration, endocardial fibroelastosis, and mural thrombus than were right atrial appendages (RAA); in contrast, RAA were more likely to show myocyte hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis than were LAA. In the LAA, myocyte hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis were more often seen in pat …

[Identification of congenital cardiac malformation and in utero arrhythmia by fetal echocardiography].

UNLABELLED: M-mode, 2D and Pulsed Doppler Echocardiography were performed on 111 fetuses of high-risk pregnancies. Fetal gestation ages ranged 16-41 weeks. Six congenital cardiac diseases were detected in utero and confirmed at autopsy in 4 cases, and one by Pulsed Doppler Echocardiography after delivery. These included a rhabdomyoma, an endocardial fibroelastosis with hydrops, a pulmonary stenosis with tricuspid regurgitation, a VSD, a VSD with descending aortic stenosis, an AV canal defect with single atrium and single AV valve with regurgitation. Arrhythmia was diagnosed in 23 fetuses, 9 ha…

[Myocardial infarction and severe mitral insufficiency. Presentation of an aortic fibroelastoma].

We report the case of a 75-year-old female with atypical chest pain followed by non-Q wave myocardial infarction. At coronary angiography and ventriculography severe left main stenosis and severe mitral regurgitation were evidenced. Transesophageal echocardiography, performed in order to evaluate a possible mitral repair, showed an aortic tumor (11 x 14 mm in diameter) attached to the commissure between the left and non-coronary cusp, without mitral regurgitation. Cardiac magnetic resonance showed a relationship between the tumor and the left coronary ostium which explained a paroxysmal mitral
