Behavioral state modulates neural activity throughout the visual system.1,2,3 This is largely due to changes in arousal that alter internal brain states.4,5,6,7,8,9,10 Much is known about how these internal factors influence visual processing,7,8,9,10,11 but comparatively less is known about the role of external environmental contexts.12 Environmental contexts can promote or prevent certain actions,13 and it remains unclear if and how this affects visual processing. Here, we addressed this question in the thalamus of awake, head-fixed mice while they viewed stimuli but remained stationary in t

IntroductionThe climate crisis presents a complex and growing challenge for healthcare systems around the world. Healthcare systems can contribute to substantial global emissions, with the UK's National Health Service (NHS) alone responsible for 4%-5% of the country's total carbon footprint. A wide range of clinical disciplines have already begun to assess and design interventions to tackle this issue. However, clinical and diagnostic laboratories remain underexplored.AimsWhat studies have been undertaken to assess and improve the environmental impact of clinical laboratories?MethodsThis scopi

Environmental markets may influence environmental justice by disproportionately affecting economically disadvantaged or socially vulnerable communities. We investigate the impact of China's Certified Emission Reduction (CCER) program on air pollution in disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged counties from 2000 to 2019. We find that the CCER program effectively reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations. We further examine the distributional impacts and find that the program promotes environmental justice by reducing disparities in air quality between

Although cancer biology has advanced considerably, the impact of environmental toxins on carcinogenesis remains underrecognized and scattered across disciplines. Evidence increasingly shows that chronic exposure to a broad range of toxins-including persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, microplastics, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which significantly contributes to cancer initiation, progression, and treatment resistance. This review synthesizes mechanistic, molecular, and epidemiological findings from 2015 to 2025, identified through systematic searches of

Environmental migration research has traditionally focused on mobility outcomes in the face of environmental change. However, the 'trapped populations' concept introduced in the influential Foresight Report (2011) drew attention to immobility outcomes owing to people's inability or unwillingness to migrate away from environmentally high-risk settings. To assess the evolution of the empirical research landscape of environmental immobility, this paper systematically reviews 55 studies in terms of their thematic focus areas, theoretical and methodological concerns, geographical distribution, the

In an increasingly urbanized world, environmental pollution is recognized for its adverse effects on both systemic and skin health. While its role in conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis is well documented, its impact on acne vulgaris remains less clear. This review aims to evaluate existing literature examining the association between environmental pollutants - such as particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen oxides (NO2, NOx) and traffic-related emissions - and the development, severity or exacerbation of acne. A systematic search of peer-reviewed English-language studies pub

The mucosal origins hypothesis posits that environmental inhalant exposures, including cigarette smoke (CS) and crystalline silica (c-silica), trigger immune responses in the lung mucosa, an extra-articular site, which precede initiating events of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathogenesis in distant joints. Epidemiological data strongly associates these exposures with RA risk, especially in genetically susceptible individuals carrying HLA-DRB1 alleles, and with the production of autoantibodies such as anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPA) and rheumatoid factor (RF). However, establishing c

BACKGROUND: This study investigated environmental contamination by Sporothrix spp. in a veterinary facility specialised in treating cats with sporotrichosis.
METHODS: Twelve samples were collected from frequently touched surfaces and cages of three cats at different treatment stages. Sampling sites included a procedure table, door handle, faucet, ethanol sprayer, an identification card with visible secretions, and cage components. Samples were cultured on Mycosel agar. Fungal growth was assessed through micromorphological analysis.
RESULTS: Sporothrix was isolated from four samples (33%), on

Pathogenic Bacillus anthracis strains carry two plasmids - pX01, which encodes a tripartite protein exotoxin complex (PA, LF, and EF); and pX02, which encodes a poly-D-gamma-glutamic acid capsule. A multidomain transcription factor, AtxA, regulates the expression of these virulence genes. AtxA has two DNA-binding Helix-Turn-Helix (HTH) domains, two phosphoenolpyruvate:carbohydrate phosphotransferase system regulatory domains (PRD1 and PRD2), and a putative EIIB domain (a component of PTS sugar transport EII-complexes). Previous studies showed that glucose and CO2 increase AtxA-dependent toxin

BACKGROUND: Historical epidemiological data indicate that plague epidemics caused thousands of deaths in Indonesia between 1911 and 1956. During this period, silent phases of the disease were observed, followed by re-emergences several years or even decades later in certain regions. The Indonesian government, both at the regional and central levels (notably the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia), has undertaken decades of epidemic management efforts, including plague surveillance, medical treatments, vector control, and improvements in individual and environmental sanitation. The

Copper pollution has become global environmental concern. Widespread Cu pollution results in excessive Cu exposure in human. Epidemiological studies and animal experiments revealed that Cu exposure might have reproductive toxicity. Cuproptosis is a newly reported Cu-dependent and programmed cell death formTsvetkov et al., 2022. However, whether copper exposure at real environmental exposure dose might cause placental cuproptosis and induce miscarriage was completely unexplored. In this study, we found that Cu exposure during pregnancy induced miscarriage or complete pregnancy loss by inducing

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a malignancy that originates from the epithelial cells of the biliary system. Despite advancements in medical diagnostic techniques, CCAs remain a challenge to detect due to their silent clinical progression, making it difficult to diagnose these diseases. There are several well-established risk factors for CCA, including biliary tract infection and inflammation. However, there is also growing evidence that community and occupational exposures play a significant role in the development of bile duct cancers. This review examines the geographical distribution of these

Estimation of the disease burden attributable to environmental factors is a powerful tool for prioritizing environmental and pollution management and public health actions around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) began estimating the environmental disease burden in 2000, which has formed the basis for the modern estimation approach conducted in the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor (GBD) study. In 2021, environmental and occupational risk factors in the GBD were responsible for 18.9% (12.8 million) of global deaths and 14.4% of all disability-adjusted life years

BACKGROUND: The biological mechanisms linking environmental exposures with cardiovascular disease pathobiology are incompletely understood. We sought to identify circulating proteomic signatures of environmental exposures and examine their associations with cardiometabolic and respiratory disease in observational cohort studies.
METHODS: We tested the relations of >6500 circulating proteins with 29 environmental exposures across the built environment, green space, air pollution, temperature, and social vulnerability indicators in ≈3000 participants of the CARDIA study (Coronary Artery Risk De

Environmental determinants of health refer to external factors in our surroundings that influence health outcomes. It is estimated that healthier environments could prevent almost one-quarter of the global burden of disease. Additionally, environmental factors, including lifestyle factors, air pollution, chemical exposures, and natural exposures, are responsible for a significant incidence of cancers and premature cancer deaths. Minority populations, low-income populations, children, and older adults are at increased risk for oncologic risks secondary to environmental factors.

Psychologists tend to rely on verbal descriptions of the environment over time, using terms like "unpredictable," "variable," and "unstable." These terms are often open to different interpretations. This ambiguity blurs the match between constructs and measures, which creates confusion and inconsistency across studies. To better characterize the environment, the field needs a shared framework that organizes descriptions of the environment over time in clear terms: as statistical definitions. Here, we first present such a framework, drawing on theory developed in other disciplines, such as biol
