Clinical and epidemiological variability in severe sepsis: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: To assess clinical and epidemiological trends of severe sepsis. METHODS: Ecological study of patients presenting to the emergency department with severe sepsis or septic shock between 2005 and 2013. Patients were identified using the state-wide hospital administrative database. Key outcomes included incidence rates (IRs) and mortality rates (per 1000 population) by age and medically underserved areas (MUAs), sepsis case fatality rate (deaths per 100 sepsis cases), and proportions of transfer and comorbidities. RESULTS: There were 154 019 sepsis cases identified. In 2005, 85+ yo i

Peripartum cardiomyopathy: An epidemiologic study of early and late presentations.

OBJECTIVE: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) can present during pregnancy and up to months post-delivery. Most large-scale epidemiologic studies have reported on cases occurring during pregnancy or the first few days postpartum (termPPCM). Limited information is available on PPCM in the later postpartum period (latePPCM). We studied the incidence, predictors, and hospital outcome of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) in the prepartum and immediate post delivery period versus up to 3 months post-delivery. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of the 2013 Nationwide Readmissions Database, and…

Epidemiology of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) is a rare cancer of the mesothelial cells in the peritoneum with poor prognosis. Earlier reports from other countries indicate an incidence of 0.2-3 new cases per million per year. No previous studies have examined the national epidemiology of MPeM in Nordic countries. This study aimed to clarify the epidemiology of MPeM in Finland over a 12-year period. METHODS: The data consisted of cancer notifications, laboratory notifications, and death certificate information in the Finnish Cancer Registry (FCR) and Statistics Finland (SF) of all MPeM

Epidemiology and outcomes of injuries in Kenya: A multisite surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Injury is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, accounting for over 5 million deaths each year. The injury burden is higher in low- and middle-income countries where more than 90% of injury-related deaths occur. Despite this burden, the use of prospective trauma registries to describe injury epidemiology and outcomes is limited in low- and middle-income countries. Kenya lacks robust data to describe injury epidemiology and care. The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiology and outcomes of injuries at 4 referral hospitals in Kenya using hospital-based

[Epidemiological Study on Trichophyton Disseminating from the Feet of the Elderly].

OBJECTIVES: To grasp the colonization status of Trichophyton in terms of spreading rate, we investigated the intergenerational epidemiological difference in the spreading rate of Trichophyton from teenagers to the elderly aged over 65. In addition, the elderly people were divided into two groups: those living at nursing homes and those living at their homes. We compared the two groups in terms of the difference in the spreading rate of Trichophyton. METHODS: Spreading rate was investigated by identifying the fungi collected by the cotton swab sampling method. The correlation between the respo

Atopy and Specific Cancer Sites: a Review of Epidemiological Studies.

Mounting evidence appears to link asthma and atopy to cancer susceptibility. This review presents and discusses published epidemiological studies on the association between site-specific cancers and atopy. PubMed was searched electronically for publications between 1995 and 2015, and cited references were researched manually. Quantitative studies relating to atopy, allergy, or asthma and cancer were identified and tabulated. Despite many exposure-related limitations, patterns in the studies were observed. Asthma, specifically, has been observed to be a risk factor for lung cancer. A protective

A practical method for use in epidemiological studies on enamel hypomineralisation.

With the development of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) judgment criteria, there has been increasing interest worldwide in investigation of the prevalence of demarcated opacities in tooth enamel substance, known as molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). However, the lack of a standardised system for the purpose of recording MIH data in epidemiological surveys has contributed greatly to the wide variations in the reported prevalence between studies. The present publication describes the rationale, development, and content of a scoring method for MIH diagnosis in epidemiolog
