Oral gingival epithelium (OGE), oral sulcular epithelium (OSE) and junctional epithelium (JE) were examined histochemically by using different lectins as markers for epithelial differentiation. The staining pattern of gingival epithelia was compared with that of the buccal and palatal epithelia. Binding of WGA had a uniform distribution in all the epithelia examined. A positive reaction was found in all the basal and spinous layers, but not in the cornified layer of the epithelia. BPA binding was seen in the lower spinous layer of OGE, OSE, buccal and palatal epithelia, and in most of the JE.

The purpose of the present study was to histologically evaluate the healing of human intrabony defects following treatment with either a bovine-derived xenograft (BDX) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) [BDX + GTR] or a bovine-derived xenograft mixed with collagen (BDX Coll) and GTR [BDX Coll + GTR]. Eight patients with chronic periodontitis and each with one very deep intrabony defect around a tooth scheduled for extraction were treated with either a combination of BDX + GTR (five patients) or with BDX Coll + GTR (three patients). The postoperative healing was uneventful in all eight cases.

OBJECTIVE: Streptococcus (S.) pyogenes is common cause of acute tonsillitis. Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), which is a common constitute of the cell surface of most gram positive bacteria, is known to act as a substance of bacterial site for adherence to epithelium and antiserum to LTA is reported to inhibit bacterial attachment to epithelial cells in vitro. Cholera toxin subunit B (CT-B) is known to be a mucosal adjuvant. Quercetin is a natural compound with potent antiviral effects; however, its role in the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) remains underexplored. Infection of human cells by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis requires adhesion and internalization of the infectious elementary body (EB). This highly complex process is poorly understood. Here, we characterize Ctad1 (CT017) as a new adhesin and invasin from C. trachomatis serovar E. Infection of mammalian cells by the strictly intracellular pathogens Chlamydiae requires adhesion and internalization of the infectious Elementary Bodies (EBs). Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an innate immune molecule present in blood and some mucosal tissues, which can influence microbial attachment and inflammatory responses of host cells during infection. In this study MBL was found to be present at a low concentration in semen samples in the range 1.2-24.9 ng/ml. Co-incubation of bacteria with semen resulted in the binding of MBL to the bacterial surface. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a common cause of genitourinary infection. MBL bound to N. gonorrhoeae with strain-to-strain variation in the intensity of binding and nature of the bacterial receptor.

The prevalence and distribution of gingivitis and gingival recession were studied in 820 Nigerians aged 15, 19, 20 and 21 years sampled from … years. Gingival recession may be a sequel of gingivitis resulting from apical proliferation of the epithelial attachment with destruction of the subjacent periodontal tissues. Hence gingivitis should be distinguished from gingival recession in its prevalence and distribution.
