Following the CJD protocol and decontamination processes (Table 1) as recommended in the Health Canada CJD Guideline will serve to prevent transmission of CJD via surgical instruments, "Preparation of the work area" and "safe handling of strong chemicals used for decontamination" are other topics that must be addressed by staff in the OR and SPD. The appendix offers a quick reference that summarizes many of the important points which staff in the OR caring for patients, and staff in SPD caring for instruments, need to be aware of.

Discs of urinary catheters with different coatings were exposed to a flow of artificial urine containing cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Within 10 h an adherent biofilm consisting of the bacteria and their exopolysaccharide products had developed on those discs coated with latex, teflon, and silicon. In contrast, on the silver alloy-coated catheter discs no biofilm of Pseudomonas aeruginosa had developed.

We report a case of a 55-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease undergoing intermittent peritoneal dialysis who developed peritonitis secondary to an infection with Pasteurella multocida resulting from a cat bite or cat scratch penetrating her peritoneal dialysis tubing. This case points out the potential importance of household pets as a source of peritoneal contamination.

A 32 year old female developed a severe hepatitis (serum bilirubin 544 mumol/l) one week after a halothane anaesthetic. Six months later a general anaesthetic was administered via a halothane free circuit without incident. A year later a further non halothane anaesthetic was administered this time utilising the routine circuit after briefly flushing the rubber tubing with oxygen. That evening she became febrile and the following day abnormal liver function tests were documented. She remained asymptomatic.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine whether neonatal nasogastric enteral feeding tubes are colonised by the opportunistic pathogen Cronobacter spp. (Enterobacter sakazakii) and other Enterobacteriaceae, and whether their presence was influenced by the feeding regime.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine tubes were collected from two neonatal intensive care units (NICU). A questionnaire on feeding regime was completed with each sample. Enterobacteriaceae present in the tubes were identified using conventional and molecular methods, and their antibiograms determined.
