Genomic basis of developmental defects of enamel and sex-specific effects.

We conducted a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study (GWAS) of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) in the primary dentition among 6,061 U.S. preschool-aged children (3-5 years). We investigated four DDE phenotypes (demarcated opacities, diffuse opacities, hypoplastic defects, and a combined DDE trait) leveraging main-effect models, joint gene-sex interaction testing (2df), and sex-stratified analyses. SNP-based heritability for the combined DDE trait was estimated at 20%, with concordance analyses robustly supporting a genetic etiology. We identified 39 unique genome-wide significant

[The acceptance of the Hall technique for primary carious molars nowadays].

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide, affecting approximately 514 million children and increasing every year. Among Hungarian preschoolers, an average of 3-4 primary teeth are affected per child. The Hall technique was introduced in the early 2000s, it is a minimally invasive approach for managing carious primary molars. Its benefits include suitability for uncooperative or anxious pediatric patients, procedural simplicity, and cost- and time-efficiency. Despite numerous studies demonstrating its effectiveness, its integration into routine pediatric dental

Differences in pericoronitis knowledge among Chinese undergraduates: a cross-disciplinary survey in Northeastern Universities.

BACKGROUND: Pericoronitis, an inflammation of the gum around a partially erupted third molar (wisdom tooth), frequently affects young adults. Despite its prevalence, the level of awareness and understanding of pericoronitis among undergraduates in various academic fields remains poorly characterized, especially among students outside health-related majors. Improving this knowledge is important to encourage timely care and prevent complications. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in April 2025 among 664 first- and second-year undergraduates from three universities in Northeastern

LinkMD: Linking Medical and Dental Records with 4 Linking Algorithms.

Despite well-established connections between oral and systemic health, electronic health records (EHRs) and electronic dental records (EDRs) remain largely siloed due to infrastructural and interoperability challenges. This separation limits interdisciplinary care and data-driven research to generate practice-based evidence. We developed and validated 4 algorithmic frameworks specifically designed to link EHR with EDR across nonintegrated systems. Using data from more than 1.7 million medical records and 222,480 dental records spanning a 10-y period at Temple University, we evaluated 4 linkage

Allogeneic Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Transplantation Induces Dentin Pulp Complex-like Formation in Immature Teeth with Pulp Necrosis and Apical Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pulp regeneration is challenging in endodontics. Cellular therapy is an alternative approach to induce dental pulp regeneration. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have the capacity to induce dental pulp-like tissue formation. In this study, we evaluated the capacity of allogeneic bone marrow MSCs (BM-MSCs) to regenerate pulp following necrosis and apical periodontitis in children's permanent immature apex teeth. METHODS: Patients aged 8 to 12 years with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis were evaluated. The study included 15 teeth (13 incisors and 2 molars) from 14 pat

Synthetic bone substitute engineered with amniotic epithelial cells enhances bone regeneration after maxillary sinus augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has been provided that a cell-based therapy combined with the use of bioactive materials may significantly improve bone regeneration prior to dental implant, although the identification of an ideal source of progenitor/stem cells remains to be determined. AIM: In the present research, the bone regenerative property of an emerging source of progenitor cells, the amniotic epithelial cells (AEC), loaded on a calcium-phosphate synthetic bone substitute, made by direct rapid prototyping (rPT) technique, was evaluated in an animal study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two blocks of syn

Blue light generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) differentially in tumor vs. normal epithelial cells.

OBJECTIVES: Blue light of high intensity is commonly used in dentistry to activate polymerization of resin restorative materials. Other than its effects on the retina, the biological effects of blue light (380-500nm wavelengths) are poorly studied. Limited evidence suggests that blue light acts by forming intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) that then affect critical cell functions. If the biological effects of blue light are redox-mediated, antioxidants might be used to mitigate unwanted side effects of blue light during clinical use, or blue light might be used therapeutically to modu

Evaluation of food and nutrient intake in a population of subjects affected by periodontal disease with different levels of bone mineral density.

INTRODUCTION: Both osteoporosis and periodontitis are pathologies characterized by an imbalance in the bone tissue. Vitamin C is an important factor involved in maintaining the health of the periodontium; its deficiency causes characteristic lesions to periodontal tissues such as bleeding and redness of the gums. Among the essential minerals for the health of the periodontium we find instead calcium. Objectives of the study: The objectives of the proposed study are to study the association between the presence of osteoporosis and periodontal disease. We tried to identify the possible connection

Mobility Limitations and Self-Perceived Unmet Dental Needs Among Korean Adults: A Nationwide Multilevel Analysis for Integrated Care.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Self-perceived unmet dental needs reflect access barriers and inequities. In rapidly aging Korea, mobility limitations may exacerbate these barriers, yet evidence disentangling individual, household, and district-level influences is scarce. We examined the association between mobility limitations and self-perceived unmet dental needs and assessed contextual variation. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from the 2024 Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) for adults aged ≥45 years (n = 167,474). Multilevel logistic regression with district random intercept

Wearable Augmented Reality for Dental Implant Navigation: From Experimental Models to Clinical Application-A Scoping Review.

Background: Accurate three-dimensional positioning of dental implants is fundamental for long-term prosthetic success. While static guided surgery and traditional dynamic navigation present intrinsic limitations related to physical bulk or hand-eye coordination (the "look-away" phenomenon), Augmented Reality (AR) via Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) promises to overcome these barriers by superimposing virtual holograms directly onto the surgical field. Objectives: The aim of this scoping review is to map the existing literature to evaluate the positioning accuracy, workflow efficiency, and ergonom

Treatment of dental and orthodontic complications in thalassaemia.

BACKGROUND: Thalassaemia is a quantitative abnormality of haemoglobin caused by mutations in genes controlling production of alpha or beta globins. Abnormally unpaired globin chains cause membrane damage and cell death within organ systems and destruction of erythroid precursors in the bone marrow, leading to haemolytic anaemia. The life-long management of the general health effects of thalassaemia is highly challenging, and failure to deal with dental and orthodontic complications exacerbates the public health, financial and personal burden of the condition. There is a lack of evidence-based
