BACKGROUND: Thumb polydactyly is a common congenital abnormality of the hand. Surgical treatment includes reduction and reconstruction. A new type of thumb polydactyly and the achieved treatment are reported.
METHODS: A 4-year-old boy with thumb polydactyly is reported. The duplicated two thumbs had one complete metacarpal and a separated triphalangeal phalanx. The ulna thumb was removed via periosteal incision, and a whole complex tissue sleeve was used to repair the ulna part of the joint capsule.
RESULTS: The postoperative aesthetic and functional results were satisfactory.

Daily home interviews-examinations were carried out for a period of three months to obtain information on the agent (object) involved, nature (diagnosis) and care provided to children aged zero to 19 years, following accidental injury, in Idikan community, Ibadan. During the study period, 1286 injuries were recorded involving all the 436 children in the study community. Rocky outcrops, chairs, broken bottles, tables, knives and glasses were the major agents of injuries (91.0%). Puncture wounds, lacerations, haematomas, sprains and dislocations constituted most of the nature of injury (96.5%).

An attempt was made to quantify the location of oral lesions. Panoramic radiographs of non-odontogenic cysts (13 globulomaxillary cysts, 8 median maxillary cysts, 8 nasopalatine cysts, 5 nasoalveolar cysts and 11 simple bone cysts) and odontogenic cysts (37 radicular cysts, 13 radicular granulomas, 68 dentigerous cysts and 40 odontogenic keratocysts) were examined.
