BACKGROUND: Primary HHV7 infection is almost ubiquitous, and it can present as exanthema subitem. Little is known on the clinical relevance of HHV7 neuroinvasion in immunocompetent children.
METHODS: We describe 12 patients (median age 9.45 years, 50% males) with acute encephalopathy and active HHV7 infection. In all patients, HHV7-DNA was detected on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by RT-PCR.

We analyzed clinical and therapeutic characteristics of Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) in north Dalmatia. Analysis was conducted in 93 patients hospitalized with MSF at Zadar General Hospital during the 1988-2000 period. The most frequently found signs of the disease were high fever (91; 97.8%), maculopapular rash (89; 95.7%), headaches (84; 90.3%), arthralgia (75; 80.6%), exhaustion (75; 80.6%) and nausea (65; 69.9%). The safety of ceftriaxone has been evaluated in 80 neonates who were treated empirically for suspected infection with either ceftriaxone and … raphically diagnosed in 6 patients, but disappeared within 2 weeks after detection. One neonate had exanthema. Nurses rated ease of administration as very good. Ceftriaxone appears to be an interesting alternative in the empiric antibiotic treatment in the early neonatal period.

Marked increase of plasma cells in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was observed in a 22-year-old female patient with measles meningoencephalitis. Typical measles exanthema was followed, 3 days later, by neurological abnormalities such as confusion, severe meningeal signs and bilateral pyramidal signs. Specimens collected from premature-partus animals resulted in recovery of a virus, San Miguel Sea Lion Virus, indistinguishable from Vesicular Exanthema of Swine Virus, and Leptospira pomona from some of the premature cows and pups.
