Gastrointestinal stromal tumor with intracranial metastasis: case presentation and systematic review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial metastasis of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs) is rare but presents unique treatment challenges. We present a case of intracranial metastasis of GIST with a systematic review of the literature. A literature search using key terms "'gastrointestinal stromal tumor' AND brain AND metastasis"" was conducted through May 2019 via Embase and Pubmed according to PRISMA guidelines. Only cases describing intradural metastases rather than calvarial or intraorbital metastases were included. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman with history of GIST metastatic to the liver

Are all prognostic factors in parotid gland carcinoma well recognized?

The aim of his study was to assess the treatment results and prognostic factors in patients with parotid gland carcinoma. The material consisted of 109 patients treated surgically, with or without complementary radiotherapy, between 1978 and 2008 (follow-up at least 5-years). 5-year overall and disease-specific survival were observed in 57.0% of the patients and 5-year disease-free survival was achieved in 50.0%. Univariate analysis including ten clinical and pathological features to assess their prognostic value was done. Parapharyngeal space invasion, facial nerve palsy, and high grade of tu

[Analysis of clinical diagnosis and treatment of 12 cases of intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma].

Objective: To investigate the clinical manifestation and management strategy of intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma. Methods: The clinical data of 12 patients with parotid schwannoma treated in Henan Cancer Hospital from January 2009 to January 2019 were analyzed retrospectively, including 5 males and 7 females, aged from 23 to 72 years. All the 12 patients complained of a mass in the parotid region, of whom 4 patients had local discomfort and pain, and 6 patients had varying degrees of pain during palpation. Ultrasound examination showed solid mass in parotid region in 8 cases and mixed mass

Facial nerve anastomosis in the cerebellopontine angle: a review of 24 cases.

Facial nerve repair during translabyrinthine tumor surgery was performed in twenty-four patients. Nineteen patients (79 percent) had return of facial function. Different techniques of facial nerve anastomosis were evaluated. Suture anastomosis was more reliable than other anastomotic methods, especially if cable nerve grafts were used. Facial function began to return within twelve months in all patients whose function returned.

Facial Neuromas Misdiagnosed as Recurrent or Idiopathic Palsy: A Systematic and Institutional Review.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of recurrent facial palsy and the frequency of misdiagnosis as Bell's palsy in patients with intratemporal facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs)Methods:A systematic review of PubMed and Cochrane databases and a single-institutional analysis were conducted, covering studies from the past 10 years on adult cases of intratemporal FNS with documented facial nerve function at presentation. Inclusion criteria focused on patients presenting with facial paralysis to assess recurrence rates and misdiagnoses as Bell's palsy. Key outcomes included incidence, severity, and t

Natural history of facial paraganglioma with 2 decades of follow-up: A case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To report 20 years of natural history data for a facial paraganglioma and provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature. PATIENT: 81-year-old female with a remote history of cardiac arrest while under anesthesia who elected to observe her facial paraganglioma for 20 years. INTERVENTIONS: Observation, clinical documentation, radiographic surveillance. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Tumor progression, patient symptomatology, and review of management options. RESULTS: The initial presentation of the facial paraganglioma was facial spasm. Over the course of observation, symptoms

Bilateral facial nerve palsy associated with amphiphysin antibody in metastatic breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic neurological syndrome is an immune-mediated phenomenon where antibodies from tumor cells are produced against neuronal proteins. Amphiphysin antibody is an onconeural antibody linked to the diagnosis of breast cancer and small-cell lung cancer. It is uncommon and typically associated with stiff-person syndrome, of which 90% of patients are eventually diagnosed with breast cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 47-year-old Caucasian woman with metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who developed bilateral facial nerve palsy while on treatment w

Facial Nerve Schwannoma Extending to Jugular Foramen: A Case Report.

Facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) is a benign, slow-growing schwannoma that originates from Schwann cells. Facial nerve schwannoma is the most common tumor of the facial nerve but rare and only accounts for 0.15% to 0.8% of intracranial neurinomas. It may be manifested as asymmetric hearing loss, facial palsy, and hemifacial spasm. A 56-year-old woman was transferred to our department, because of pain behind the right ear and spasm of the right lateral muscle for more than 2 years and pulsatile tinnitus for half a year. Based on the preoperative medical history, physical signs, and auxiliary exami

Advances in facial nerve management in the head and neck cancer patient.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize best practices in facial nerve management for patients with head and neck cancer. In addition, we provide a review of recent literature on novel innovations and techniques in facial reanimation surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Although recommended when tumor ablation surgery requires facial nerve sacrifice, facial reanimation procedures are not always performed. Concurrent dynamic facial reanimation with masseteric nerve transfers and cable graft repair can preserve native facial muscle function. Static suspension can provide facial suppo

A new retroauricular flap for facial reconstruction.

A retroauricular reverse flow flap based on the anastomosis of the frontal branch of the temporal superficial artery with the corresponding vessel of the opposite side as well as with the ipsilateral supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries, was used in two clinical cases for forehead and facial reconstructions. The arc of rotation associated with the length of the pedicle allows its transfer, in a one-stage procedure, to cover small to medium defects of any part of the forehead, face and parts of the scalp. The procedure is safe, simple and causes minimum donor site morbidity.

[Intra-temporal bone paralysis of the facial nerve].

On the basis of personal experience and data from literature, the authors enumerate causes of peripheric paralysis of the facial nerve due to diseases and injuries of the temporal bone. They made the aetiological classification of these paralyses and described some pathophysiological mechanisms of their onset.

Congenital glaucoma associated with cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita: two case reports.

Two cases of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita are described in association with nevus flammeus and congenital glaucoma. Approximately 65 cases have been reported and the association with nevus flammeus and congenital glaucoma has only been reported in one of those cases. Unlike the glaucoma associated with nevus flammeus of Sturge-Weber, this type of congenital glaucoma appears to be associated with an abnormal filtration angle rather than an increased episcleral venous pressure.
