Necrotizing Fasciitis (NF) is a rare, rapidly progressive severe bacterial soft tissue infection with a high mortality rate. NF classically involves the trunk, groin/perineum, lower limbs, and postoperative wound sites. NF secondary to spinal anaesthesia in a young postpartum female is extremely rare. Here we are describing a young postpartum female who underwent cesarean section for the delivery of child but developed NF of the back starting from the site of spinal needle insertion. She was referred to our center after 21 days of surgery with extensive NF. She underwent serial debridement but

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an infrequently encountered skin infection that has high morbidity and mortality, even with prompt medical and surgical intervention. We describe the case of a 67-year-old male presenting with significant NF in his left lower extremity, despite aggressive surgical intervention, and included multiple surgical debridements, ACell Matrix, split-thickness, and negative wound VAC therapy. Ultimately, this patient required a below the knee amputation. This is the first documented case of Haemophilus influenza type a causing NF.

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is a commonly used practice during spine surgery. Complications of electromyography (EMG) needle electrode placement are very uncommon. We present a patient who was infected with necrotizing fasciitis in her left thigh due to an EMG needle electrode during a two-stage complex spine procedure. This case demonstrates that providers should continue to meticulously adhere to protocol when inserting and removing EMG needles, but also be cognizant during postoperative observation of the possibility of infection caused by EMG needles.

Necrotizing fasciitis, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, is an extremely rare and life-threatening bacterial soft tissue infection. We report a case of early necrotizing fasciitis associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae infection in a 26-year-old man who was immunocompromised with mixed connective tissue disease. The patient presented with acute, painful, erythematous, and edematous skin lesions of his right lower back, which rapidly progressed to the right knee. The patient underwent surgical exploration, and a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis was confirmed by pathological evidence of ne

OBJECTIVE: to examine the diagnostic accuracy of traditional 'red flags' for necrotizing fasciitis (NF) on history and physical examination.
METHODS: retrospective study of all cases of NF admitted to a large tertiary care hospital between January 1 2004 and December 31 2013, each matched to two control patients with cellulitis. We determined the diagnostic test characteristics of clinical features for distinguishing NF from cellulitis, with emphasis on positive (LR+) and negative (LR-) likelihood ratios.
RESULTS: There were no individual findings with sufficient sensitivity to rule out NF (

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common causes of acute abdominal pain. Accurate diagnosis is often hindered due to various presentations that differ from the typical signs of appendicitis, especially the position of the appendix. A delay in diagnosis or treatment may result in increased risks of complications, such as perforation, which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by perforated appendicitis is extremely rare. We herein report a case of 50-year-old man presenting with an appendiceal abscess in local hospital. After ten days of c

Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck is a rare and potentially fatal disease. It is a bacterial infection characterized by spreading along fascia planes and subcutaneous tissue resulting in tissue necrosis and likely death. It is commonly of dental or pharyngeal origin. Factors affecting the success of the treatment are early diagnosis, appropriate antibiotics and surgical debridement. Our study showed eight patients, five males and three females with mean age of 49.25 years (range 20-71 years). Clinical presentations were a rapidly progressing painful neck swelling, fever, dysphagia and

Myroides sp., previously known as Flavobacterium odoratum, is a relatively unknown organism with unclear human pathogenicity. While Myroides sp. has been implicated in human infections, many reports have described the organism as a relatively avirulent opportunistic pathogen. We present an unusual case of rapidly fatal necrotizing fasciitis and septic shock due to Myroides odoratus. Our case demonstrates the pathogenicity of Myroides, and highlights potential risk factors for infection including underlying liver disease and open wounds. The recognition of Myroides is of particular importance g

BACKGROUND: Orbital injury secondary to petroleum-based products is rare. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of a combined compressed air and chemical orbital injury, which mimicked necrotizing fasciitis.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old man was repairing his motorcycle engine when a piston inadvertently fired, discharging compressed air and petroleum-based carburetor cleaner into his left eye. He developed surgical emphysema, skin necrosis, and a chemical cellulitis, causing an orbital compartment syndrome. He was treated initially with antibiotics and subsequently with intravenous steroi

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an uncommon, rapidly progressive, and potentially fatal infection of the superficial fascia and subcutaneous tissue. NF caused by an enterocutaneous fistula has special clinical characters compared with other types of NF. NF caused by enterocutaneous fistula may have more rapid progress and more severe consequences because of multiple germs infection and corrosion by digestive juices. We treated three cases of NF caused by postoperative enterocutaneous fistula since Jan 2007. We followed empirically the principle of eliminating anaerobic conditions of infection, b

We report on a previously healthy 56-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with fever and progressive left foot pain. She had been bitten by a cat 7 days previously, and cephalosporins had been prescribed for treatment. However, her clinical symptoms deteriorated, and physical examination on admission was compatible with necrotizing fasciitis. Treatment with ampicillin-sulbactam and clindamycin was initiated. In addition, immediate surgical debridement was performed, resulting in therapeutic success. Culture of the necrotizing tissue grew multiple organisms, including Pasteurella mul

Necrotizing fasciitis is an orthopedic emergency. The ability to quickly and accurately diagnose this rapidly spreading disease can save a patient's life and limb. However, the diagnosis is complex because necrotizing fasciitis usually manifests as a less severe cellulitis or abscess while the majority of the damages rage beneath the surface of the skin. Although the diagnosis is not new, the potential causes and vectors continually change. This article reports a new source of necrotizing fasciitis in an intramuscular injection of "bath salts," a rapidly emerging street drug that is legal in s

AIM: The study evaluated the effect of a loose-seton technique for perianal necrotizing fasciitis.
METHOD: The medical records of seven patients with perianal necrotizing fasciitis treated by the loose-seton technique between December 2005 and June 2010 were reviewed. Age, gender, status of diabetes mellitus, duration of symptoms, the length of hospital stay and number of debridements were investigated.
RESULTS: Five of the patients were men. The mean age was 53 years and the range was 43-79 years. All seven patients had a past history of acute perianal abscess. Six (85.7%) patients had diab

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare life-threatening condition characterized by rapidly spreading infection in the subcutaneous tissues. Most of the time, the infection is precipitated by an event that produces a break in the epidermis. The authors report the case of a 55-year-old farmer who developed a necrotizing fasciitis of the left lower limb following a rat bite. The patient had serial debridement of his wound and broad-spectrum antibiotics and subsequent partial thickness skin grafting. His total duration of admission was 93 days. Early diagnosis, an aggressive wound debridement, and broad-

Serratia marcescens is an extremely rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis. We report the first case of necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall due to infection with S. marcescens that initially manifested as bilateral breast necrosis. The patient had a fulminant course leading to death within 72 h of presentation. Literature pertinent to S. marcescens-mediated necrotizing fasciitis is also reviewed.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection that can cause local tissue destruction, necrosis, and life threatening severe sepsis. Necrotizing fasciitis in the head and neck region caused by an extravasation injury is rare. This paper reports a patient with necrotizing fasciitis of the cervical region caused by an extravasation injury which required an early surgical debridement.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis are opportunistic infections with high morbidity and mortality caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes, they mainly affect diabetic and immunocompromised patients. In up to 20% of all cases the main infection is localized in the skin, with a great number of them presenting in healthy patients that have suffered from severe trauma or burns. Zygomycetes tend to invade arteries, which leads to thrombosis and generates wide necrotic areas; this favors the progress of the infection and invasion of deep tissues. Up to 24% of primary cutaneous mucormycosis can be complicated

A 42-year-old man developed necrotizing fasciitis on the right leg. A multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii was cultivated from the deep wound. Following therapy with imipenem and tobramycin as well as extensive debridement, the lesions improved slowly. A. baumannii is today an important cause of nosocomial infections, especially in intensive care units.
