BACKGROUND: Appropriate maternal nutrition and body weight gain during pregnancy is well established as a major factor in healthy prenatal development in humans. Given the role of nutrition and body weight gain in normal development, pharmaceuticals intended to reduce appetite and promote weight loss will generate developmental toxicity data that may be challenging to interpret. To aid with this, the effects of feed restriction, and subsequent reduction in maternal body weight gain, on embryo-fetal development was investigated in the rabbit.
METHODS: Groups of 15 pregnant New Zealand White ra

Cell death in the endodermal region of the digestive tract of the blood-feeding leech Piscicola geometra was analyzed using light and transmission electron microscopes and the fluorescence method. Sexually mature specimens of P. geometra were bred under laboratory conditions and fed on Danio rerio. After copulation, the specimens laid cocoons. The material for our studies were non-feeding juveniles collected just after hatching, non-feeding adult specimens, and leeches that had been fed with fish blood (D. rerio) only once ad libitum. The fed leeches were prepared for our studies during feedin

OBJECTIVES: Artificial milk supplementation remains a popular practice in spite of the well documented and indisputable advantages of breast feeding for both mother and child. However, the association between maternal sleep, fatigue and feeding method is understudied and remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate whether perceived sleep and fatigue differ between breast- and bottle feeding post partum women. In addition, the relationship between subjective sleep characteristics and fatigue is examined.
METHODS: Post partum women (four to 16 weeks) filled out a socio-demographic

PURPOSE: Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) is a common neonatal intestinal obstruction associated with prematurity, low birth weight, and additional anomalies. Postoperative enteral feeding delays, caused by proximal duodenal dysmotility and anastomotic edema, prolong the need for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and the use of a central venous catheter (CVC). The transanastomotic tube (TAT) bypasses the dysfunctional segment for direct jejunal feeding. This study evaluated effects of TAT on outcomes, TPN/CVC requirements, complications, and hospitalization duration in neonates undergoing

INTRODUCTION: Texture-modified diets are commonly used in the management of dysphagia in older adults. Conventional pureed diets, although safe, are often visually unappealing, potentially leading to reduced intake and negative feeding behaviors. Molded purees are created using food molds and gelling agents and aim to improve mealtime experiences through enhanced presentation. This study evaluated the effects of molded puree on feeding behaviors and intake amount in residents of aged-care facilities and whether any factors were associated with more favorable outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative oral feeding difficulties in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) are associated with prolonged hospital stays, increased readmission rates, and decreased patients' and their family's quality of life. They have recently been recognized as part of post-intensive care syndrome in pediatrics. The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for acquired feeding difficulties after surgery for CHD in infants. We hypothesized that infants who underwent more complex surgical procedures would be at higher risk.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observati

AIM: There remains no consensus on the definition or value of early oral feeding after head and neck surgery. The main objective of this study was to determine how immediate oral feeding (IOF) with soft diet within 2 days following free-flap reconstruction of the oral cavity affected severe post-operative morbidity within 30 days and length of hospital stay (LoS).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in 2021-2023 in our tertiary hospital center. The associations between severe post-operative morbidity and LoS with the independent variable of IOF were analyzed by multivariate

(1) Background: Feeding behavior habits have a pattern with a certain tendency during infancy. We aimed to identify the associations between feeding patterns in infancy and the subsequent 10-year childhood disease burden. (2) Methods: Data from 236,372 infants were obtained from the national health insurance and screening program records in South Korea. Parent-administered questionnaires during infancy provided details on the feeding type and types/frequency of complementary food for analyzing feeding patterns. The outcomes were all-cause hospitalization and the development of 15 representativ

OBJECTIVES: Oral feeding in preterm infants is a complex and dynamic process involving oral motor development and interaction between the neurological, cardiorespiratory, and gastrointestinal systems. Oral motor stimulation (OMS) is defined as stimulating the oropharyngeal components such as the lips, jaw, tongue, and soft palate with fingers in preterm infants to increase their feeding skills. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of OMS exercises on the sucking and swallowing skills of preterm infants and demonstrate the utility of objective scales to evaluate infants' readiness for

BACKGROUND: Rapid weight gain (RWG) during infancy increases the risk of excess weight later in life. Nutrition- and feeding practices associated with RWG need to be further examined. The present study aimed to examine nutrition- and feeding practice-related risk factors for RWG during the first year of life.
METHODS: A population-based longitudinal birth cohort study of 1780 infants, classified as having RWG or non-RWG during 0-3-4, 0-6 and 6-12 months. RWG was defined as a change > 0.67 in weight standard deviation scores. Associations between nutrition- and feeding practice-related factors

BACKGROUND: Patients with colorectal cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis (CRC/PC) may benefit from cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC). Nutritional support is frequently required for patients after CRS/HIPEC. It remains unclear if placement of feeding access is of benefit in regard to improving postoperative nutrition in this patient population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with CRC/PC who underwent complete cytoreduction were evaluated. Preoperative and postoperative nutritional data and discharge outcomes were retrospectively recorded. The presence

BACKGROUND: Parents with past and current eating disorders (ED) have been shown to report troubles nourishing their infants. This could increase the risk of infant feeding problems linked to maternal anxiety and depression. It is not clear how mothers' eating difficulties before pregnancy and at the time of birth can affect infant's feeding. We aimed to specify the impact of eating disorders on mothers' adaptation and sensitivity to their offspring during feeding, by comparing a population of mothers with eating disorders and controls.
METHODS: Twenty-eight women agreed to participate in inte

PURPOSE: To determine whether a relationship exists between the timing of feeding before retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) eye examinations and gastric side effects or distress associated with this examination.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized, single-masked study was conducted involving infants in the neonatal intensive care unit who required an ROP eye examination and who received normal or full enteral feeding over a 1 year period. Infants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 study arms: feeding 1 hour before examination (arm 1) or feeding schedule adjusted to ensure no feeding within 2 hours

BACKGROUND: Early feeding with cow's milk (CM) may increase the risk of cow's milk allergy (CMA).
OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine prospectively whether supplementary feeding of CM at the maternity hospital would increase the risk when compared with feeding with pasteurized human milk or hydrolyzed formula.
METHODS: We studied 6209 unselected healthy, full-term infants, of whom 5385 (87%) required supplementary milk while in the hospital. The infants were randomly assigned to receive CM formula (1789 infants), pasteurized human milk (1859 infants), or whey hydrolysate formula (1737 infants).

The treatment of newborns with craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft lip and/or palate poses special challenges for healthcare providers. Often, the collaboration of an interdisciplinary team of pediatricians, orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons is necessary. Therapy using feeding or stimulation plates can improve feeding and strengthen orofacial muscle tone. The treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate using conventionally manufactured feeding plates as well as the treatment of patients with reduced orofacial muscle tone through stimulation plates therapy are establis
