Sunlight-Induced Interfacial Electron Transfer of Ferrihydrite under Oxic Conditions: Mineral Transformation and Redox Active Species Production.

Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation under anoxic conditions has been intensively studied, while such mechanisms are insufficient to be applied in oxic environments with depleted Fe(II). Here, we investigated expanded pathways of sunlight-driven ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of dissolved oxygen, without initial addition of dissolved Fe(II). We found that sunlight significantly facilitated the transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite compared to that under dark conditions. Redox active species (hole-electron pairs, reactive radicals, and Fe(II)) were produced from the fe

Evidence for Quinol Oxidation Activity of ImoA, a Novel NapC/NirT Family Protein from the Neutrophilic Fe(II)-Oxidizing Bacterium Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1.

Sideroxydans species are important chemolithoautotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria in freshwater environments and play a role in biogeochemical cycling of multiple elements. Due to difficulties in laboratory cultivation and genetic intractability, the electron transport proteins required for the growth and survival of this organism remain understudied. In Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1, it is proposed that the Mto pathway transfers electrons from extracellular Fe(II) oxidation across the periplasm to an inner membrane NapC/NirT family protein encoded by Slit_2495 to reduce the quinone pool.

Simultaneous removal of COD and NH4+-N from domestic sewage by a single-stage up-flow anaerobic biological filter based on Feammox.

In recent years, Feammox has made it possible to remove NH4+-N under anaerobic conditions; however, its application in practical wastewater treatment processes has not been extensively reported. In this study, an up-flow anaerobic biological filter based on limonite (Lim-UAF) was developed to facilitate long-term and stable treatment of domestic sewage. Lim-UAF achieved the highest removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4+-N at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h (Stage II). Specifically, the COD and NH4+-N content decreased from 240.8 and 30.0 mg/L to about 7.5 and 0.35

Efficacy and safety of ferric citrate hydrate compared with sodium ferrous citrate in Japanese patients with iron deficiency anemia: a randomized, double-blind, phase 3 non-inferiority study.

Oral iron preparations are used as first-line treatment for iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but their gastrointestinal side effects prevent patients from appropriate adherence. We recently conducted a randomized, double-blind, phase 3 non-inferiority study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two dosages of ferric citrate hydrate (FC) compared with sodium ferrous citrate (SF) in patients with IDA. FC at both 500 and 1000 mg/day was non-inferior to SF at 100 mg/day in terms of the change in the hemoglobin concentration at Week 7 from baseline. Logistic regression analysis suggested that the cum

Simultaneous atrazine degradation and E. coli inactivation by UV/S2O82-/Fe2+ process under KrCl excilamp (222 nm) irradiation.

This study is the first to reveal that the iron-catalyzed photo-activation of persulfate (UV/PS/Fe2+system) under mercury-free KrCl excilamp irradiation (222 nm) is capable of simultaneous degradation of an organic pollutant and inactivation of a microorganism in aqueous media using the herbicide atrazine (ATZ) and E. coli as model contaminants, respectively. Deionized water, natural water and wastewater effluents, contaminated with 4 mg/L ATZ and/or 105 CFU/mL E. coli, were sequentially treated by direct UV, UV/PS and UV/PS/Fe2+ processes. Lowering the pH to 3.5 accelerated both the degradati

Intermediate P* from soluble methane monooxygenase contains a diferrous cluster.

During a single turnover of the hydroxylase component (MMOH) of soluble methane monooxygenase from Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, several discrete intermediates are formed. The diiron cluster of MMOH is first reduced to the Fe(II)Fe(II) state (H(red)). O₂ binds rapidly at a site away from the cluster to form the Fe(II)Fe(II) intermediate O, which converts to an Fe(III)Fe(III)-peroxo intermediate P and finally to the Fe(IV)Fe(IV) intermediate Q. Q binds and reacts with methane to yield methanol and water. The rate constants for these steps are increased by a regulatory protein, MMOB. Previous

Oxidative damage to DNA constituents by iron-mediated Fenton reactions--the thymidine family.

The degradative products formed from the exposure of derivatives of thymidine to iron-mediated Fenton reactions were identified by chromatographic resolution and analysis by UV absorption spectroscopy, radio-labeling, and positive and negative mode fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. Fe(2+)/H2O2 and Fe(3+)/H2O2 were utilized to generate oxy-radicals and the effects of ethanol and N2-flushing were studied. Substrates included thymidine, 3'- and 5'-dTMP, TpT, oligo(dT), and oligo(dT)·poly(dA) and the results are compared to those reported for ionizing radiation. It is evident from the compa

Metal complexes of antibiotic drugs. Studies on dicluxacillin complexes of FeII, FeIII, CoII NiII and CuII.

The synthesis and characterization of dicluxacillin (DC) complexes with di- and tri-valent metal ions are described. The nature of bonding of the chelated DC and its metal complexes structures have been elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic (infrared, solid reflectance, magnetic spectra, mass and thermal analysis) properties. In all the complexes studied, the DC acts as a chelate monoanionic ligand with coordination involving the carboxylate O atom and the endocyclic N of the thiazole ring. The DC ligand forms mono-ligand complexes of the general formula [M(DC)(H2O)x(A)]. yH2O where D

Occupational methaemoglobinaemia. Mechanisms of production, features, diagnosis and management including the use of methylene blue.

Methaemoglobin is formed by oxidation of ferrous (FeII) haem to the ferric (FeIII) state and the mechanisms by which this occurs are complex. Most cases are due to one of three processes. Firstly, direct oxidation of ferrohaemoglobin, which involves the transfer of electrons from ferrous haem to the oxidising compound. This mechanism proceeds most readily in the absence of oxygen. Secondly, indirect oxidation, a process of co-oxidation which requires haemoglobin-bound oxygen and is involved, for example, in nitrite-induced methaemoglobinaemia. Thirdly, biotransformation of a chemical to an act

Identification of a ferritinophagy inducer via sinomenine modification for the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Ferritinophagy is a cellular process to release redox-active iron. Excessive activation of ferritinophagy ultimately results in ferroptosis characterized by ROS accumulation which plays important roles in the development and progression of cancer. Sinomenine, a main bioactive alkaloid from the traditional Chinese medicine Sinomenum acutum, inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells by promoting ROS production. Herein, new compounds were designed and synthesized through the stepwise optimization of sinomenine. Among them, D3-3 induced the production of lipid ROS, and significantly promoted colo

Mechanism of o-aminophenol metabolism in human erythrocytes.

o-Aminophenol was found to be rapidly metabolized to a brown compound in the presence of purified human oxy- and methemoglobin, coupled with the oxidation and reduction of these hemoglobins by o-aminophenol. The final product of o-aminophenol was identified as 2-aminophenoxazine-3-one, by using spectrophotometry and HPLC. The metabolism of o-aminophenol was also observed in human erythrocytes. The production rates of 2-aminophenoxazine-3-one in the cells were very fast, but these were strongly decreased by bubbling carbon monoxide into the cell suspension when intracellular hemoglobin was in t

Constitutional dynamic DNA assembly with adaptive feedback for accurate electrochemical evaluation of multiple microRNAs.

A constitutional dynamic DNA network (CDN) integrated with catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) was developed for the accurate ratiometric electrochemical detection of multiple microRNAs (miRNAs). To overcome the limitations of conventional single-signal multiplex assays, this strategy relies on a [2×2] equilibrium system that undergoes target-triggered dynamic reconfiguration in the presence of miRNA-21 or miRNA-221. This reconfiguration regulates the cleavage of specific signal probes at the electrode interface, while distinct dynamic states initiate orthogonal CHA pathways. Subsequently, genera

Oxidation of ferrous iron in aerobic and anoxic conditions in activated sludge systems.

Understanding iron (Fe) speciation dynamics in wastewater is essential for controlling Fe redox reactions, phosphate removal and predicting vivianite formation in wastewater treatment plants. This study investigates the oxidation rate of ferrous iron (Fe2+) in activated sludge systems under aerobic and anoxic conditions using controlled batch experiments at different total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations. Ferrous iron disappearance from the liquid phase was attributed to rapid adsorption onto biomass immediately after dosing, followed by oxidation; subsequent Fe2+ disappearance from the

Enhancing sulfide mitigation via the synergistic dosing of calcium peroxide and ferrous ions in gravity sewers: Efficiency and mechanism.

Chemical dosing constitutes an effective strategy for sulfide control in sewers; however, its efficacy requires further optimization and enhancement. In this study, a novel dosing strategy using the synergistic dosing of calcium peroxide (CaO2) and ferrous ions (Fe2+) for sulfide control was proposed, and its efficacy in controlling sulfides was evaluated using a long-term laboratory-scale reactor. The results showed that adding CaO2-Fe2+ improves the effect of sulfide control. When the ratio of the agent to the sewage (w/v) was 0.30 %, the RT50 of sulfide production rate was 8.34 days. The an

Binding mechanism, digestive stability, and cellular interactions of a potential organic Iron supplement: Fermented scallop skirt peptide (DDDHPGIF)-Iron complex.

The fermentation-derived scallop skirt peptide (DDDHPGIF) with strong ferrous ion-binding capability (95.17 ± 0.30 %) was identified in our previous study. However, the structure-function relationship of the peptide prepared by fermentation was still unclear. This study elucidated the binding mechanism, digestive characteristics and transport modes of the fermentation-derived peptide. We hypothesized that the binding process involved the formation of coordination bonds between the carboxyl groups and ferrous ions, followed by self-assembly through intermolecular hydrogen bonds, resulting in a

Characterization and bioaccessibility of Fe2+-oat bran peptide chelate.

Ferrous chelating peptides are ideal iron supplements due to their high bioavailability and low side effects. This study developed novel ferrous-chelating peptides from oat bran, a processing by-product, along with their microcapsules, providing a cost-effective approach for iron supplementation. The chelation mechanism was characterized, and the antioxidant activities were evaluated in vitro. Stable chelate formation was driven by Fe2+ coordination with functional groups from Glu, Asp, and Lys residues. The chelates exhibited strong antioxidant activity, with DPPH and OH radical scavenging ca
