Fetal Development of Human Oral Epithelial Pearls With Special Reference to Their Stage-Dependent Changes in Distribution.

OBJECTIVE: To access detailed distribution and age-dependent changes of oral epithelial pearls. DESIGN: Investigation and analysis with human fetal serial sections. SETTING: Institute of Embryology. METHODS: This study examined serial frontal sections of the upper and lower jaws of 19 human fetuses at 12 to 18 weeks and of the lower jaws of four late-stage fetuses. RESULTS: The upper jaw contained more than 20 midline and more than 60 lateral pearls greater than 20 μm in diameter, whereas the lower jaw contained fewer than 30 pearls of the same size. Midline pearls in the upper jaw were of

Role of Insulinlike Growth Factor 1 in Fetal Development and in the Early Postnatal Life of Premature Infants.

The neonatal period of very preterm infants is often characterized by a difficult adjustment to extrauterine life, with an inadequate nutrient supply and insufficient levels of growth factors, resulting in poor growth and a high morbidity rate. Long-term multisystem complications include cognitive, behavioral, and motor dysfunction as a result of brain damage as well as visual and hearing deficits and metabolic disorders that persist into adulthood. Insulinlike growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a major regulator of fetal growth and development of most organs especially the central nervous system incl

The impact of umbilical blood flow regulation on fetal development differs in diabetic and non-diabetic pregnancy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Diabetes is well-known to influence endothelial function. Endothelial function and blood flow regulation might be different in diabetic and non-diabetic pregnancy. However, the impact of umbilical blood flow regulation in gestational diabetes on fetal development is unknown so far. METHODS: In a prospective birth cohort study, we analyzed the association of the umbilical artery Doppler indices (pulsatility index, resistance index and systolic/diastolic ratio) and fetal size measures (biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and birth weig…

The influence of fetal ethanol exposure on subsequent development of the cerebral cortex as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome and related disorders (commonly referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, or FASD) cause significant hardships to the individuals affected. Previously, histological studies in animals have characterized developmental cerebral cortical abnormalities that result from prenatal ethanol (EtOH) exposure. Additionally, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have identified abnormalities associated with fetal EtOH exposure in the cerebral cortices of human children and adolescents. However, there is still a need to bridge the gap between human MRI studies and

Development and use of a high-fidelity simulator for fetal endotracheal balloon occlusion (FETO) insertion and removal.

Objectives The objective of this article is to describe the development of an anatomically accurate simulator in order to aid the training of a perinatal team in the insertion and removal of a fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO) balloon in the management of prenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Methods An experienced perinatal team collaborated with a medical sculptor to design a fetal model for the FETO procedure. Measurements derived from 28-week fetal magnetic resonance imaging were used in the development of an anatomically precise simulated airway within a silicone

From research to practice: an integrative framework for the development of interventions for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Since fetal alcohol syndrome was first described over 35 years ago, considerable progress has been made in the delineation of the neurocognitive profile in children with prenatal alcohol exposure. Preclinical investigators have made impressive strides in elucidating the mechanisms of alcohol teratogenesis and in testing the effectiveness of pharmacological agents and dietary supplementation in the amelioration of alcohol-induced deficits. Despite these advances, only limited progress has been made in the development of evidence-based comprehensive interventions for functional impairment in alc

Impaired development of mitochondria plays a role in the central nervous system defects of fetal alcohol syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can induce a wide spectrum of adverse effects in offspring. Microcephaly and mental retardation are two major defects of central nervous system (CNS). Most mechanism studies of alcohol-related CNS defects have been focused on the morphologically abnormal tissues, and more attention has been paid to nuclear alteration as opposed to organelle development. METHODS: A mouse model of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was used to investigate the effect of alcohol on fetal cerebral mitochondria development. Pregnant mice were given different doses of ethan

Maternal influenza infection is likely to alter fetal brain development indirectly: the virus is not detected in the fetus.

Epidemiological studies have shown that maternal infection can increase the risk for mental illness in the offspring. In a mouse model of maternal respiratory infection with influenza virus, the adult offspring display striking behavioral, pharmacological and histological abnormalities. Although influenza primarily infects the respiratory system, there are reports of viral mRNA and protein in the fetus of infected pregnant animals. To determine the extent of viral spread following maternal respiratory infection, we used RT-PCR to assay various maternal and fetal tissues for influenza A mRNAs c

Fetal heart development in the nitrofen-induced CDH rat model: the role of mechanical and nonmechanical factors.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), it was recently shown that early and late gestational lung underdevelopment is caused by nonmechanical and mechanical factors, respectively. Heart underdevelopment, which might predict lung hypoplasia, is commonly attributed to mechanical factors. The authors analyzed whether nonmechanical and mechanical factors affect cardiac growth and correlations between lung and heart weights during gestation. METHODS: Left-sided CDH was induced in pregnant Wistar rats by administration of nitrofen on E9.5. At selected gestational ages (E18, E

Steroid contents of and steroidogenesis in vitro by the developing gonad and mesonephros around sexual differentiation in fetal sheep.

The aim of the present study was to establish whether the steroids, progesterone, androstenedione, testosterone and oestradiol, were present in the mesonephric-gonadal complex of female and male sheep fetuses around sexual differentiation (that is, from day 28 to day 45 of gestation, with sexual differentiation occurring at approximately day 32). A second aim was to test whether the mesonephric-gonadal complex, mesonephros (days 35-45 only) and gonad (days 35-45 only) were capable of steroid synthesis in vitro. The steroid contents in the mesonephric-gonadal complex were not detectable before

Fetal and postnatal development of the patella, patellar tendon and suprapatella in the rabbit; changes in the distribution of the fibrillar collagens.

The development of the patella, its associated tendons, and suprapatella of the rabbit knee joint is described from the 17 d fetus to the mature adult. The patellar tendon (ligament) with the patella on its posterior surface is seen in the 17 d fetus and is fully developed by 1 postnatal wk. It is composed of bundles of types I and V collagens separated by endotenons of types III and V collagens. Anteriorly there is an epitenon of types III and V collagens while synovium and a fat pad cover its posterior surface. In the 25 d fetus, the patella is cartilaginous and is separated from the femoral

Precocious cerebral development associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum in mid-fetal life: a transient syndrome?

Four fetal brains are described in which the cerebrum showed precocious sulcus formation. The fetuses were 14, 17, 18 (15), and 19 (15-16) weeks of gestational age (age in parentheses according to developmental parameters). Associated lesions were characterized by insufficient insular formation and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Cases 1 and 3 had no familial anomalies, while a sib of case 2 had rhombencephalic malformations and a sib of case 4 lissencephaly. Case 2 showed further brain malformation including a migration disorder in the cerebrum and case 3 was associated with a Turner syndrom

The development of the nerve network in the fetal human carotid body and its subsequent function in cardiac disease.

Carotid bodies from 17 human fetuses of gestational age ranging from 10 weeks to full term were examined in histological sections stained by the Bodian silver protargol method to demonstrate nerve axons. At 10 weeks gestation the carotid body was contacted by a single nerve bundle at its apical pole but by the 13th week a second bundle had also reached the proximal pole. Thin, pale nerve axons extended from these bundles and surrounded the carotid body to form a plexus from which several small groups of axons entered its superficial regions. With increase of gestational age beyond this point t

Dilated and contracted forms of primary endocardial fibroelastosis: a single fetal disease with two stages of development.

Left ventricular endocardial fibroelastosis was diagnosed by echocardiographic scanning in a fetus at 20 weeks' gestation. Repeated prenatal examination over the next 20 weeks' gestation showed the development of the left ventricle from a chamber with a dilated cavity to a small cavity with a very thick wall. These findings were confirmed at necropsy and by the absence of other morphological anomalies. The contracted form of primary fibroelastosis in the fetus must have followed an insult that prevented any further increase in the size of the left ventricular cavity.

The effect of prolonged oligohydramnios on fetal lung development, maturation and ventilatory patterns in the newborn guinea pig.

We drained the amniotic fluid surrounding guinea pig fetuses between days 45 and 65 of gestation (term is 67 days). The fetuses were delivered by Cesarean section and the impact of prolonged oligohydramnios on lung growth, maturation and postnatal ventilatory pattern was measured. Untouched littermate fetuses served as controls. Neither fetal body, liver nor brain weights were significantly affected by the experimental situation. When expressed in percent of control values, lung weight (63%), lung/body weight ratio (70%), lung volume (67%), total lung DNA content (63%) and lung DNA per gram of

Laryngeal atresia, pleurodesis, and diaphragmatic hypertrophy in a newborn infant with findings relevant to fetal lung development.

A rare congenital malformation, cartilaginous subglottic laryngeal atresia, was found associated with developmental growth disturbances in the lungs (hypoplasia), diaphragm (hypertrophy), and pleural cavities (pleurodesis) in a newborn premature male infant who died immediately after birth. Because of coexistent esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, and anal atresia, the lower respiratory tract and gastrointestinal canal together formed a closed system throughout fetal life. A mechanism whereby diaphragmatic hypertrophy and mesenchymal obliteration of the pleural cavities may have evo

Studies on the growth of the fetal guinea pig. The effects of ligation of the uterine artery on organ growth and development.

The effects of reduced maternal placental blood flow on the growth and development of the fetal guinea pig have been studied by unilateral ligation of the uterine artery at day 30 of pregnancy. Fetal guinea pigs were investigated about 20 or 30 days later. In about one-third of cases fetal death occurred, in another third fetuses less than 60% of normal weight were observed and in the remainder all fetuses were in the normal weight range. In the growth retarded fetuses prenatal growth occurred at about 50% of the rate in control. There was no postnatal 'catch up' as growth still remained lower

[The significance of betamimetics and magnesium for the outcome of pregnancy: II. The role of magnesium in the development of gestosis and fetal hypotrophy].

Of 4905 single pregnancies between 1979 and 1982 the 882 (18.0%) risk pregnancies managed tocolytically with Betamimetics and Magnesium were retrospectively compared with the remaining collective (R) of 4023 (82.0%) patients without management. The tocolysed patients (B/Mg) received Magnesium in addition to Betamimetics: since 1979/1980 a low dose Mg containing drug (Feto-Longoral) aimed at "cardioprotection" (3-6 mval Mg++ daily), and since 1981 to "support tocolysis" 30-40 mval Mg++ daily per os in the form of Mg-aspartate (Mg 5-Longoral). All cases of gestosis (G) in both collectives B/Mg a

[Formation of the microcirculatory bed of the muscle coat of the wall of the sigmoid colon during human fetal development].

During intrauterine life microcirculatory bed of the muscular coat is forming and developing in accordance with its differentiation, growth and functional changes at various steps of its ontogenesis. This step-like differentiation in the parts composing the microcirculatory bed and the whole microcirculatory network of longitudinal and circulatory layers of the muscular coat is genetically connected with differentiation taking place in the wall of the sigmoid colon during the developmental period studied and, in the end, reflects morphological maturation of the sigmoid colon at different stage
