Sustaining collegiate recovery programs: a literature review and SWOT analysis.

Substance use disorder and behavioral addictions remain significant concerns within higher education, yet little research has examined Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) from an organizational perspective. This narrative literature review synthesized 71 peer reviewed studies to examine the internal and external organizational factors influencing the long term sustainability of CRPs using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) framework. Following a comprehensive literature search, findings were analyzed using deductive thematic synthesis to identify recurring organizationa

Organ donation in Latin America.

Recently in Latin America, there has been a strong influence of the "Spanish model" of organ procurement. In 2001, The "Punta Cana Group" was created by Latin American transplantation coordinators with the objective of registering and improving the system of donation and procurement. In many countries there is no universal financial support from the government for medical treatment, including dialysis and transplantation. In other countries there is complete financial support for all of the population, including immunosuppressive drugs. Practically all countries have transplantation laws that …

Latinos report less use of pharmaceutical aids when trying to quit smoking.

BACKGROUND: Latino smokers are more likely than white non-Latino smokers to attempt cessation, but less likely to receive cessation advice from physicians or to use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Proposed underlying causes have included lighter smoking, lower financial status, and less healthcare access. This study assessed these factors as possible explanations for disparate rates of smoking-cessation support. METHODS: Data were analyzed from a random, population-level telephone survey of Colorado adults that interviewed 10,945 white non-Latino respondents and 1004 Latino respondents. F

[A red and swollen arm after vaccination for covid-19].

In this case report, we present a 41-year old male with a red rash on his arm 7 days post vaccination with the mRNA Moderna vaccine. While the patient received antibiotics for the suspicion of a cellulitis, this was actually a delayed type 4 local allergic reaction to the vaccine or a so called 'Covid arm'. This reaction occurs frequently, is usually self-limiting and a conservative treatment is recommended. Conflict of interest and financial support: none declared.

Onchocerciasis (river blindness)- can it be eradicated?

Onchocerca volvulus causes a disease of significant socio-economic importance in West Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and regions of South America. Brian Duke explains that, despite the advent of ivermectin, the prospects for the eradication of this potentially highly debilitating infection are remote. Moreover, the logistical problems associated with the control of morbidity caused by the parasite are considerable, and are highly dependent on the ability to sustain financial support and political will over many decades.

Demonstrating the Feasibility of an Economic Empowerment and Health Promotion Intervention among Low-Income Women Affected by HIV in New York City.

Women of color in the U.S. face systematic exclusion from the labor market, work protections, and employer-based benefits. Women's economic vulnerability increases their susceptibility to health-related issues, including HIV transmission and substance use, which are work-restricting disabilities, by constraining their capacity to effectively reduce risk. The Women's Economic Empowerment pilot examined the feasibility of a structural intervention, implemented at a neighborhood agency, combining both health promotion and economic empowerment components as a pathway to accessing an urban job mark

Determinants of psychological well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic among "people living with HIV/AIDS" in India.

Using survey data on 647 "people living with HIV/AIDS" (PLHIV) respondents from India, we examine the association between human, economic, and social capital and psychological well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic, and whether pandemic-induced job and financial insecurity are significant stressors. We find that among human capital indicators, family health status results in a more positive mental state and fewer personal conflicts among PLHIV while having more working-age adults in the household results in more conflict. With regards to economic capital, PLHIV in salaried jobs and self-emplo

Navigating Organizational Challenges and Formal Support for Afghan Refugee Women in California Amid Covid-19 and the Taliban's Takeover.

Afghan refugee women in the United States are facing mental health challenges due to COVID-19 and the 2021 Taliban takeover. Given the key role of formal support in refugees' mental health, in this study we examined the effectiveness, barriers, and facilitators of formal support from governmental and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) by interviewing 34 Afghan refugee women and 18 refugee service providers in California. Results indicated sufficient formal support was received by women in areas like food/grocery assistance, COVID-related programs, financial aid, and referral services. Howeve

Barriers and facilitators to managing multiple chronic conditions: a systematic literature review.

The prevalence of multiple chronic conditions (MCC) is increasing, creating challenges for patients, families, and the health care system. A systematic literature search was conducted to locate studies describing patient's perceptions of facilitators and barriers to management of MCC. Thirteen articles met study inclusion criteria. Patients reported nine categories of barriers including financial constraints, logistical challenges, physical limitations, lifestyle changes, emotional impact, inadequate family and social support, and the complexity of managing multiple conditions, medications, an

The Financial Burden of Localized and Metastatic Bladder Cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bladder cancer (BCa) imposes a substantial economic burden on health care systems and patients. Understanding these financial implications is crucial for effective resource allocation and optimization of treatment cost effectiveness. Here, we aim to systematically review and analyze the financial burden of BCa from the health care and patient perspectives. METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA)-compliant systematic review was conducted, searching PubMed/Medline, Embase, and public sources for studies evaluating the fina

Advancing the Pathways Model: Financially Focused Self-concept and Erroneous Beliefs as Core Psychopathologies in Disordered Gambling.

In the Pathways Model, there are three distinct etiological subtypes of disordered gambling (Behaviourally Conditioned, Emotionally Vulnerable, and Anti-Social Impulsive Risk-Taker). The Pathways Model also posits that erroneous gambling beliefs are a maintenance factor of disordered gambling across the subtypes. Yet, etiological factors and erroneous beliefs have largely been examined separately when determining disordered gambling subtype. Moreover, there may be heretofore unexamined maintenance factors that span the disordered gambling subtypes. In the current research, we addressed this ga

Working women's sexual risk taking in Jamaica.

Although the rates of HIV are increasing among female populations in developing countries, there is little information available about factors influencing sexual risk taking among working class women. This paper describes some of the issues discussed by two groups of 58 women working in Jamaica: Informal Commercial Importers and women working in the Freezone. These women discuss their economic vulnerability, expectations about the role of men as providers, multiple partners, perceptions of children as resources and concern about physical abuse as factors that could influence decisions about co
