Several case reports have been published describing the coexistence of sarcoidosis and cancer. In the literature, simultaneous occurrence of head and neck cancer and sarcoidosis is rarely reported. In this paper we present a case of a 42-year-old man with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, locally advanced, which after surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy developed local persistence and progression in the mediastinal lymph nodes. Orbital metastases are known to arise from primary breast carcinoma followed by prostate, malignant melanoma, and lung carcinoma. We report a case of orbital metastasis as the initial presentation of an occult primary gall bladder carcinoma. The FDG PET/CT helped in localizing the occult distant primary site, which previously escaped detection, and also enabled the evaluation of orbital metastasis.

Rhabdomyosarcoma rarely metastasizes to breast. A 15-year-old adolescent girl underwent FDG PET/CT scan for staging a newly diagnosed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The images showed not only the abnormal activity in the region of the right maxillary sinus, consistent with the known primary tumor, but also an intense focal activity in the right breast. The right breast lesion was excised, and the pathological results showed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.

Human African trypanosomiasis imported to nonendemic countries is rare. It is very difficult to establish the correct diagnosis of human African trypanosomiasis in nonendemic areas. OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that the majority of patients with PMR have increased 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake around the shoulders, hips and processes of the cervical and lumbar spine on PET. The specificity of these findings for PMR is, however, not known.

A 78-year-old man had fever, persistent wheezing, and serum C-reactive protein elevation. Malignant lymphoma was suspected because of mediastinal lymph nodes swelling on CT and soluble interleukin 2 receptor elevation. Symmetric F-FDG uptake in the tracheobronchial tree and bilateral auricles was observed on PET/CT. He was finally diagnosed as having relapsing polychondritis by auricular cartilage biopsy. F-FDG PET/CT may have crucial role in evaluating the extent of inflammation and deciding the biopsy site of relapsing polychondritis.

RATIONALE: Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic solid tumors and common to 25% of women. F-fluorodexyglucose (F-FDG) is an energy metabolism tracer. Although FDG is generally concentrated in malignant lesions with high glucose metabolism, it can also accumulate in normal tissues, benign lesions, and inflammatory sites. The exact mechanism of FDG uptake by uterine fibroids is not clear. We herein describe a case of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (s-JIA)-associated macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) in which the 18F fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F FDG-PET) findings were characteristic. The pattern of greater 18F FDG accumulation into the spleen compared with the liver was more remarkable in this patient compared with s-JIA. This pattern, however, was also observed in cases of acute leukemia. In the present patient, serum interleukin (IL)-18 was extremely elevated (255 000 pg/mL), whereas in leukemia patients it is mildly elevated (360-1480 pg/mL)
