Grocery Delivery to Support Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes: Protocol for a Pilot Quality Improvement Program.

BACKGROUND: People with low income are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes (T2D), and 17.6% of US adults with T2D experience food insecurity and low diet quality. Low-carbohydrate eating plans can improve glycemic control, promote weight loss, and are associated with improved cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality. Little is known about supporting low-carbohydrate eating for people with T2D, although food-as-medicine interventions paired with nutrition education offer a promising solution. OBJECTIVE: This program aims to support the initiation of dietary changes by using gr…

Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the child food security survey module in adolescents.

Food insecurity significantly impacts the physical, psychological, and social well-being of children and adolescents. Accurate assessment requires self-report measures, as caregiver reports may not fully capture adolescents' unique experiences and psychosocial consequences. While several food insecurity tools exist for Turkish populations, a validated self-report instrument specifically for adolescents is lacking. This study aimed to adapt the self-administered food security survey module for children aged 12 years and older (CFSSM) into Turkish and evaluate its psychometric properties. A vali…

Spatial correlation between excess weight, purchase of ultra-processed foods, and human development in Brazil.

The aim of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution of excess weight in Brazil and its correlation with household food insecurity, purchase of foods by type of processing, and Human Development Index (HDI). An ecological study was undertaken using data from three surveys conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Spatial analysis techniques were used to perform univariate and bivariate analysis. The prevalence of excess weight was 34.2% (CI 95% 33.8-34.6%). Excess weight showed a moderate and significant spatial autocorrelation (0.581; p = 0.01), with higher pr…

Safety-Net FoodRx: Repeat Attendance and Produce Consumption Patterns in a Produce Distribution Program.

Background: Free produce distributions at safety-net health center sites represent a promising strategy for mitigating food insecurity. Understanding how these services connect to participant outcomes is essential for optimizing food delivery to the community. Objectives: In this secondary analysis of Los Angeles County FoodRx Clinic's Produce Distribution Program (PDP), we evaluated the association between attendance frequency and the proportion of produce consumed ("all" versus "less than all") among returning participants, adjusting for socio-demographic, household, and program characterist…

Addressing Economic Insecurities Can Improve Patient-Reported Outcomes in Lupus.

OBJECTIVE: Economic insecurities, such as food, housing, transportation, and financial challenges, are modifiable risk factors and influence patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We examined the following: (1) associations between economic insecurities and PROs, and (2) the impact of screening and addressing economic insecurities during SLE visits. METHODS: In the Collaborative Lupus Clinics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, patients were routinely screened for economic insecurities and met with a social worker (SW) during visits. Exploring Associations Between Social Factors and Current Substance Use Among Older African Americans with HIV.

Background: Substance use is highly prevalent among older people with HIV and continues to have a negative impact on engagement along the HIV care continuum, particularly among African Americans (AA). Social factors like resource insecurity, stigma, and discrimination may play a role in substance use behaviors. However, there is limited research on how these social factors impact substance use among older people with HIV. Objectives: The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine associations between demographic and social factors and substance use among older AAs with HIV. Results: Fift

Redistributing power in food systems: how community-led responses move from crisis buffering to systems transformation.

Food and nutrition insecurity in high‑income countries is increasingly persistent, driven by intersecting economic, social and environmental disruptions. In Australia, acute shocks such as the COVID‑19 pandemic, floods and bushfires, alongside chronic pressures including rising food prices, housing stress and concentrated corporate power, have exposed structural weaknesses in food access, governance and system resilience. This review examines how community‑led responses to food and nutrition insecurity function during disruption, whether they buffer short-term hardship or contribute to adaptiv

Giving Resources to lOw-income Children to Enhance RecoverY (GROCERY): Protocol for a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Social and structural factors drive health disparities in children. Hospitalization of a child is stressful for families, especially for low-income families who may experience exacerbation of food insecurity and other financial hardships. There is a need to evaluate interventions to support low-income families after hospitalization to improve child health and family well-being and ultimately to reduce health disparities. OBJECTIVES: In this randomized control trial (RCT), we will compare the effectiveness of a post-discharge financial support intervention with standard resources o…

Do cash transfers increase nutritional intakes? Experimental evidence from an unconditional cash transfer in Kenya.

Malnutrition due to persistent food insecurity has been a serious public health issue in Kenya. An unconditional cash transfer programme, the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP), was launched in 2009 in northern Kenya to reduce extreme poverty and to mitigate food insecurity. This study investigates the impact of the HSNP, on expenditure on food, types of food consumed and nutritional intake. Focusing on nutritional intake as well as spending and consumption is important because an unconditional cash transfer, which does not specify how the transferred money must be used, does not guarantee nut…
