Postoperative ultrasound biomicroscopic evaluation of the haptic position in transsclerally sutured posterior-chamber lenses as compared with the intraoperative endoscopic position.

Our objective was to evaluate the long-term stability of transsclerally sutured posterior-chamber lens (PCL) haptics. A total of 22 patients (26 eyes) were examined 29-50 months postoperatively by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) to determine the exact haptic position in relation to the iris base, ciliary sulcus, pars plicata, and pars plana. In all eyes, endoscopy had been performed intraoperatively immediately after PCL insertion and suture fixation of the haptic. We could locate all 52 haptics by UBM. Intraoperative haptic localization was compared with the postoperative position. UBM confirm

Fish bone penetration of the duodenum extending into the pancreas: report of a case.

We report a case of fish bone penetration of the duodenum extending into the pancreatic head, which was successfully treated by surgery. A 73-year-old woman was admitted with upper abdominal dull pain that had persisted for 3 days. Computed tomography showed a linear calcified body, which appeared to penetrate the posterior wall of the duodenal bulb into the pancreatic head. A laparotomy was performed based on the preoperative diagnosis of localized peritonitis caused by penetration of the duodenum into the pancreas by an ingested foreign body. The foreign body was safely removed from both the

Finding a needle in the common carotid artery 3 years after ingestion.

A woman presented with an ischemic stroke involving the right middle cerebral artery. Investigations revealed a foreign body in the cervical area. It was identified as a metal needle, perforating the posterior pharyngeal wall and migrating into the right common carotid artery (CCA). Three years previously, this patient had complained of odynophagia, brought on by needle ingestion. Three days before her stroke, she had hematemesis, caused by migration of the needle into the CCA. The stroke was caused by migration of the thrombus. This type of event is rarely encountered in Europe. Early recogni

[Spontaneous migration of a metal clip into renal pelvis after laparoscopic pyeloplasty: a case report].

Migration of surgical materials into the urinary tract is very rare. We present a case of spontaneous migration of a metal clip into renal pelvis after laparoscopic pyeloplasty. A 44-year-old woman who had a long history of multiple sclerosis presented with symptomatic left hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. Since antegrade endopyelotomy was unsuccessful, the patient underwent laparoscopic Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty. The UPJ was wrapped with thick inflammatory tissue and a crossing vessel that firmly adhered to the UPJ was found and dissected. Metal clips were used

[Intravascular migration of fragments of central venous catheters. 3 cases].

Intravascular embolization of catheter fragments is a severe and rare complication of indwelling intravenous catheters. The estimated rate of incidence is 0,1% of central venous catheter insertions. This report of three cases shows how this complication may occur and suggests preventive measures. Mortality from arrhythmia-related cardiac arrest, septic and thrombo-embolic complications, and the risk of perforation of the heart argue for an immediate extraction of the broken catheter. Surgical removal used to be the only method; a non-surgical technique is now available, in which the embolized

A case of panuveitis caused by caterpillar setae.

INTRODUCTION: Panuveitis is a serious inflammatory disease. Setae are fibers produced by many insects and plants. Many case reports have described caterpillar and spider fibers entering the eye. These hairs are covered with tiny barbs that help them enter and migrate into the eye tissue, leading to severe inflammation. Normally, they are buried mainly in the conjunctiva and cornea. However, in the present case, they entered the posterior segment of the eye, which is very rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A female patient presented with a complaint of repeated foreign body sensation, redness, pain, and

Management of migrating intracranial bullets: lessons learned from surviving an AK-47 bullet through the lateral brainstem.

OBJECTIVE: Survival after a gunshot wound (GSW) to the head is becoming more common, with an accompanying increase in spontaneous migration of these intracranial bullet fragments. This phenomenon is well described in current literature and is a potentially life-threatening delayed complication of GSW to the head. METHODS: We present the case of a 17-year-old boy who survived a penetrating GSW to the cranium and cerebellum after an accident involving an AK (Automatic Kalashnikov)-47 (7.62 mm). RESULTS: Following initial attempts to remove the bullet and associated hematoma from the cerebellar

Colonic perforation by a transmural and transvalvular migrated retained sponge: multi-detector computed tomography findings.

Transmural migrated retained sponges usually impact at the level of the ileo-cecal valve leading to a small bowel obstruction. Once passed through the ileo-cecal valve, a retained sponge can be propelled forward by peristaltic activity and eliminated with feces. We report the case of a 52-year-old female with a past surgical history and recurrent episodes of abdominal pain and constipation. On physical examination, a generalized resistance was observed with tenderness in the right flank. Contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography findings were consistent with a perforated right colon

Successful treatment of liver abscess secondary to foreign body penetration of the alimentary tract: a case report and literature review.

Hepatic abscess caused by foreign body penetration of the alimentary tract is rare. We report a case of gastric antrum penetration due to a toothpick complicated by liver abscess formation. A 41-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of upper abdominal pain for 2 mo. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed at a local clinic revealed a toothpick penetrating the gastric antrum. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen at our hospital revealed a gastric foreign body embedded in the posterior wall of gastric antrum with regional phlegmon over the lesser sac and adhesion to

[Accidental ingestion of magnets in children. Report of three cases].

Accidental ingestion of foreign bodies in childhood is an increasing problem. Although many of them can be treated with an expectant approach, allowing their passage through the gastrointestinal tract, magnets must be extracted, due to their high rate of complications, such as perforation. We report three patients that ingested magnets. A five year-old male was operated with an extensive ulceration of the jejunum, where a cylindrical magnet was extracted. A four year-old female was operated with a perforation of the anterior wall of the stomach and three magnets were extracted from the periton

Accidental swallowing of endodontic instruments.

Swallowing or aspiration of a foreign body is a complication that may arise from any procedure in the oral cavity performed without the use of a rubber dam. Two cases of swallowed endodontic instruments and possible complications are presented. Emphasis is given in the discussion on the early diagnosis and treatment and primarily on prevention with the use of rubber dam, an absolute essential during endodontic treatment.

Percutaneous antegrade removal of foreign bodies in the urinary tract: a 20-year, single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: While removing urinary tract foreign bodies is mostly performed through retrograde cystoscopy, antegrade removal using interventional procedures is reported less frequently. PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of percutaneous antegrade removal of urinary tract foreign bodies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 14 consecutive patients (age range 9-80 years) who percutaneous antegrade removal of urinary tract foreign bodies between January 2001 and March 2020 were reviewed. Detailed removal procedures and complications were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Types of f

Loose intra-articular body following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

We report a case of intra-articular fracture of a bioabsorbable fixation device from the femoral tunnel in an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using a bone-tendon-bone graft. Thirteen months after successful reconstruction surgery, the patient experienced episodes of locking and medial joint pain. There was no history of trauma and no symptoms of instability or swelling. On revision arthroscopy, a fractured tip of a bioabsorbable RIGIDfix cross pin (Mitek, Westwood, MA) was identified in the medial compartment of the knee. There was a broad area of chondral erosion affecting the media

Laparoscopic extraction of a urethral self-inflicted needle from pelvis in a boy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Self-insertion of foreign bodies in the urethra is an infrequent occurrence in children, and their management aims to minimize urethral morbidity. Endoscopic removal presents a significant challenge, particularly in boys. Currently, there are few reports on laparoscopic management of urethral foreign bodies that have migrated to the pelvic cavity. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with complaints of increased frequency of micturition and dysuria. A sharp sewing needle was discovered lodged in the posterior urethra mucosa during cystoscopy

Bilateral shotgun pellet pulmonary emboli.

Intravascular migration of bullets and other foreign bodies is a rare but known complication of penetrating trauma. Missile embolization can represent a diagnostic challenge because it may present in various and unexpected ways. We present the case of a 54-year-old female who sustained shotgun pellet emboli to the pulmonary arteries following a left upper extremity gunshot wound and related vascular surgery. The case illustrates bilateral embolization, and the embolic events occurred following surgery. Embolization should be considered in evaluating patients with gunshot wounds, particularly i
