Association between frontal sinus morphology and craniofacial parameters: A forensic view.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphologic structure of the frontal sinuses with postero-anterior cephalometric radiographs in Turkish adolescents and to compare the findings between genders. The study sample consisted of 148 subjects divided into two groups (74 male subjects; mean age: 14.55 ± 1.42 years-74 female subjects; mean age: 14.95 ± 1.80 years). The right and left maximum height and width of the frontal sinus, maxillary width, nasal width, cranial width, antegonial width parameters were measured in 148 postero-anterior cephalometric radiographs. The data were analyzed usin

The effect of early fronto-orbital advancement on frontal sinus development and forehead aesthetics.

The frontal sinuses make an important contribution to normal forehead and glabellar contour. This study was designed to test our clinical impression that early fronto-orbital ("frontal bone") advancement could have an adverse effect on frontal sinus development and consequently on forehead aesthetics. A retrospective study was conducted on 11 patients who had undergone fronto-orbital advancement and also had a long period of follow-up at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University. The longitudinal cephalometric data were compared with unoperated controls. With one e

[Revision endoscopic sinus surgery--long-term follow up and operative findings].

Among 170 cases (301 sides) with chronic sinusitis who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery, 15 cases (25 sides) were reoperated on because of unsatisfactory results. We examined 12 such cases, periodically, with an endoscope following the first operation. Postoperative endoscopic management, including removal of polyps in the middle nasal meatus and irrigation of the maxillary sinus with sterilized saline water through the enlarged opening, had been done if necessary. However, stenosis of the middle nasal meatus had gradually progressed and mucous or purulent discharge had increased despite pos

Posterior orbital cellulitis: case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: It is rare for isolated sphenoid sinusitis to cause orbital cellulitis. We present a rare case of posterior orbital cellulitis, so caused, together with a review of the relevant literature. CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old woman presented with a 6-week history of progressive, unilateral, retro-orbital and periorbital right eye pain. On examination, the only finding was reduced visual acuity in the right eye. A computed tomography scan demonstrated right frontal and sphenoid sinus opacification. Sphenoidotomy and frontal sinus trephination were subsequently performed, following failure

Complications following open treatment of frontal sinus fracture: A nationwide analysis of 1492 patients.

PURPOSE: Prior studies characterizing surgically managed frontal sinus fractures are small, institutional studies from major trauma centers (1-5). The current study characterizes the concomitant injuries and complications following open treatment of frontal sinus fractures across the United States. METHODS: Patients who underwent open treatment for a frontal sinus fracture between 2010 and 2022 were identified in a United States administrative database. Patients <18 years old and with <90 days of follow-up were excluded. Type of fracture (simple or complex), frontal sinus obliteration and con

[Significance of local pain syndrome in patients with frontitis].

The diagnostic value of local pain symptom as a key sign of frontitis is currently regarded as rather low. It occurred only in 69 (14%) of the 487 patients with this disease examined in the present study. Patients presenting with ambiguous symptoms of uncomplicated unilateral frontitis were studied by rheofrontography using coefficient of asymmetry as a diagnostic criterion (its value in excess of 24% indicates the presence of exudate in the sinus cavity. The electron microscopic study demonstrated the presence of morphologically different cells in frontal sinus mucosa of patients with uncompl

Eyelid abscess as a presenting sign of occult sinusitis.

PURPOSE: To describe 5 patients who presented with eyelid abscesses whose subsequent workup revealed occult sinusitis. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 5 patients who presented with eyelid abscess. Common presenting signs and symptoms were identified. Successful diagnosis and treatment was accomplished in each case. RESULTS: All patients were in good general health and did not appear to be systemically ill. Eyelid swelling was the chief presenting complaint of each patient. None of the patients complained of fevers or chills. Each patient had an upper eyelid abscess. Symptoms sugg

Morpho-functional evaluation of osteomeatal complex in chronic sinusitis by coronal CT.

The objective was to determine whether or not there exists a clinical-radiological correlation in chronic sinusitis of anterior paranasal sinus and to quantitatively evaluate the importance of osteomeatal complex structures and anatomic variants in chronic sinusitis etiopathology. We analyzed 208 nasal fossae with high-resolution and low-irradiation coronal computed tomography. The following inclusion criteria we established: one case control and one control group. We considered any chronic thickness of sinusal mucosal as a radiological indicator of chronic sinusitis. We evaluated the mucosal

Post-traumatic Pott's puffy tumour: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteomyelitis of the frontal sinus is a rare clinical entity and generally occurs as a complication of trauma to the forehead or frontal sinusitis. It can be responsible for life-threatening complications, as the first symptoms may appear to be minor. Early diagnosis and appropriate management to prevent central nervous system complications significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality. CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a 34-year-old man with Pott's puffy tumour following trauma to the frontal sinus. DISCUSSION: The diagnosis was suggested clinically and confirmed …

Frontal mucocele caused by an ectopic maxillary tooth.

OBJECTIVE: To present a previously unreported cause of frontal mucocele. CASE REPORT: A patient presented with a frontal mucocele and maxillary sinusitis. Computed tomography revealed an ectopic maxillary tooth as the cause of her signs and symptoms. Removal of the tooth by a Caldwell-Luc procedure facilitated resolution of the mucocele. Conventional treatment of mucoceles by endoscopic sinus surgery, and other rhinological sequelae of ectopic teeth, are considered. CONCLUSION: This is the first documented case of an ectopic tooth causing a frontal mucocele, and demonstrates how effectively

Chronic frontal sinus disease: combined use of platelet-rich plasma and calvarial bone grafts for sinus obliteration in aggressive and secondary cases.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical management of chronic frontal sinusitis can be challenging. The most effective way to treat this condition is sinus obliteration. Several methods have been published. We evaluated the feasibility of a combined treatment, consisting of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and autologous calvarial bone chips, in chronic frontal sinus diseases (CFSD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2001 to June 2006, seven patients (four women and three men) were admitted presenting with signs and symptoms of CFSD. Their ages ranged from 35 to 67 years. Two patients presented with signs of f…

Giant Primary Schwannoma of the Left Nasal Cavity and Ethmoid Sinus.

A unilateral tumour in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses is commonly caused by polyps, cysts, and mucoceles, as well as invasive tumours such as papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Schwannomas, in contrast, are rare lesions in this area (Minhas et al., 2013). We present a case of a 52-year-old female who presented with a 4-year progressive history of mucous hypersecretion, nasal obstruction, pain, and fullness. Imaging of the paranasal sinuses showed complete opacification of the entire left nasal cavity and sinuses by a tumour causing subsequent obstruction of the frontal and maxilla

Bony remodelling in an osteoma of the paranasal sinuses.

Osteoma is the commonest benign tumour of the paranasal sinuses (Handousa, 1952). A case of a large osteoma removed from the frontal and ethmoid sinuses is presented. Histopathological examination of this tumour revealed evidence of bony remodelling similar to that seen in Paget's disease which has not been previously reported. The pathological significance of this finding is discussed.

First-line management of sinusitis: a national problem? Overview.

Traditional concepts of sinus disease as primarily involving the maxillary sinuses are giving way to understanding of the primary involvement of the ostiomeatal complex. Recognition of predisposing factors is also improving, as is localization of disease in the ethmoid, maxillary, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses. Because of the interdependence of the sinuses, acute sinusitis is rarely limited to one sinus. The diagnosis of acute disease is relatively easy compared with that of chronic sinusitis, which mimics many other conditions. Antibiotics and decongestants typically constitute initial therap

Radiography and ultrasonography in paranasal sinusitis.

In order to analyze whether ultrasonography with a reasonable degree of confidence can replace radiography in the diagnosis of sinusitis, 138 patients with clinical signs of sinusitis were examined with both methods. It was found that maxillary sinus fluid was recognized ultrasonographically with a confidence that increased with the amount of fluid, judged from radiographic examinations. In a sub-group of 45 cases, fluid confirmed by maxillary sinus puncture was detected by ultrasonography in 35/45 sinuses (78%) and by radiology in 38/45 sinuses (84%). In patients with radiographically normal

Efficacy of NVC-422 against Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in a sheep biofilm model of sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial biofilms are a major obstacle in management of recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis. NVC-422 is a potent, fast-acting, broad-spectrum, nonantibiotic, antimicrobial with a new mechanism of action effective against biofilm bacteria in in vitro conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of NVC-422 as local antibiofilm treatment in a sheep model of rhinosinusitis. METHODS: After accessing and occluding frontal sinus ostia in 24 merino sheep via staged endoscopic procedures, S. aureus clinical isolate was instilled in frontal sinuses. Followin

Long-term frontal sinus patency after endoscopic frontal sinusotomy.

BACKGROUND: The frontal recess is the drainage pathway that connects the frontal sinus to the anterior ethmoid sinus. Mechanical obstruction is the primary cause of chronic frontal sinusitis with or without a secondary inflammatory process. Eosinophilic inflammation is one of the underlying causes for chronic rhinosinusitis. OBJECTIVES/HYPHOTHESIS: To evaluate long-term frontal sinus patency after endoscopic frontal sinusotomy in chronic rhinosinusitis patients and to assess the effect of eosinophilic inflammation on frontal sinus patency. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. Symptom ass…

Headaches due to nasal and paranasal sinus disease.

Sinus infections are much less common today than they were in the preantibiotic era, but they still are overdiagnosed. Acute sinusitis, a relatively uncommon cause of headache, is the result of infection of one or more of the cranial sinuses. Acute sinusitis usually is characterized by purulent discharge in the nasal passages and a pain profile determined by the site of infection. Sinusitis is overdiagnosed as a cause of headache because of the belief that pain over the sinuses must be related to the sinuses. In fact, frontal head pain more often is caused by migraine and tension-type headache
