In recent years, it has become clear that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have difficulty with gross motor function and coordination, factors which influence gait. Knowledge of gait abnormalities may be useful for assessment and treatment planning. This paper reviews the literature assessing gait deviations in children with ASD. Five online databases were searched using keywords "gait" and "autism," and 11 studies were found which examined gait in childhood ASD. Children with ASD tend to augment their walking stability with a reduced stride length, increased step width and there…

Infantile tibia vara (ITV) is an acquired form of tibial deformity associated with tibial varus and internal torsion. As there is currently insufficient data available on the effects of orthotics on gait parameters, this study aimed to document the influence of orthosis on walking. A male infant with bilateral tibia vara used orthoses for five months. Gait evaluations were performed pre- and posttreatment for both legs. The kinematic parameters were collected by using a motion analysis system. The orthotic design principle was used to correct the femur and tibia. Posttreatment gait parameters …

BACKGROUND: The progressive deterioration of gait in Huntington's disease (HD) leads to functional decline and loss of function. To understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for the gait changes in HD, we examined the automatic control of gait by measuring the relationship between stride length and cadence. The relationship is strongly linked in healthy adults during automatic gait but disrupted in pathological gait disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD).
METHODS: The stride length cadence relationship was compared between seventeen participants with HD, twenty with PD and twenty …

BACKGROUND: Subcortical vascular dementia relates to small-vessel disease and hypoperfusion, resulting in focal and diffuse ischemic white matter lesions. The main target of the disease are the frontal subcortical neural networks. There is no clinical standard definition of the pathology, on the contrary, everyday clinical practice suggests dominant behavioral alterations and dysexecutive syndrome.
METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate gait disorders, behavioral alteration, and drug intake of a subcortical population with dementia (n = 1155). A complete neuropsychological examinat…

Although, several thorax models have been proposed for clinical gait analysis, none has received widespread acceptance nor been subject to any extensive validation work, especially for the marker set to use. The aim of this study was thus to determine the optimal and minimal makers' placement on the thorax for clinical gait analysis. Ten healthy subjects have performed a series of movements (arm, head, trunk) with large amplitude during walking. Reflective markers were taped on the thorax (C7, T2, T4, T6, T8, T10, T12, sternum, clavicles and ribs) and their 3D positions were captured with an o…

In community-dwelling older adults, usual gait speed over 4 m (4MGS) consistently predicts greater risk of adverse health outcomes. The aims of the present study were to assess the reliability of the 4MGS and the relationship with established health outcome measures in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Test-retest and interobserver reliability of the 4MGS were measured in 80 and 58 COPD patients, respectively. In 586 COPD patients, the 4MGS, as well as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), the incremental shuttle walk (ISW), Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnoea scale and St Ge…

This paper proposes a new configuration for a hybrid-FES gait restoration system, and presents a combination of simulation and experiment that support the feasibility of the proposed approach. Gait simulation results are presented that indicate the majority of load bearing and the majority of power for gait is provided by the legs (i.e., quadriceps muscle stimulation). Based on these simulations, experiments on healthy subjects indicate that the gait restoration approach should be capable of providing long periods of locomotion unimpeded by quadriceps muscle fatigue.

Cerebellar damage typically results in ataxia and can be caused by stroke, tumor, or one of many forms of degenerative disease. Since few pharmacological options are available, most treatments rely heavily on rehabilitation therapy. Little data exist on methods for tracking the progression of ataxia, which is critical for assessing the efficacy of current and newly developing treatments. Here, we tracked the severity of ataxia, with a particular emphasis on gait and balance dysfunction, in a group of individuals with cerebellar damage using the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale (IC…

Lurcher mutant mice represent a model of olivocerebellar degeneration. Postnatally, a complete loss of Purkinje cells and secondary reduction of granule cells and inferior olive neurons occurs. Cerebellar ataxia is among the symptoms of degeneration of the cerebellum. The aim of the work was to identify gait parameters which are changed in Lurcher mice due to cerebellar ataxia arising from functional cerebellar decortication, and to assess the correlation between gait parameters, walking speed and performance in rotarod test. We used the adult Lurcher mutant and wild type mice of the B6CBA str…
