Gallbladder duplication is a rare biliary tract malformation. According to Boyden's classification, the double gallbladder is divided into the bilobed gallbladder and truly duplicated gallbladder, including the Y-shaped [cystic ducts uniting before entering the common bile duct (CBD)] and H-shaped (cystic ducts separately entering into the CBD) types. The case described here was the Boyden H-shaped type. Preoperative diagnosis of the disease is essential to rationalize surgical planning and avoid complications. Transabdominal ultrasound is the first imaging technique that can diagnose biliary

One of the unusual problems associated with gallbladder disease is a polyp discovered by either ultrasonography or by oral cholecystogram. We report a recent experience of two cases of polyps of the gallbladder removed by cholecystectomy. The incidence of gallbladder polyps of any type is quite varied in the medical literature. Eighty percent of polyps occur in females, and these occur after the third decade of life. The polyps can either be cholesterol or inflammatory polyps that are not really benign tumors but just reactions of the gallbladder wall. The true mucosal benign lesions are eithe

99mTc-HIDA is concentrated by the hepatocytes and excreted into the biliary system; the gallbladder, common bile duct, and early accumulation in the duodenum are visualized within 30 minutes of intravenous administration. The authors studied the utility of 99mTc-HIDA imaging in both acute and chronic cholecystitis and hepatobiliary disease in the presence of jaundice: (a) all normal gallbladders exhibited filling, (b) absence of visualization indicated gallbladder disease and/or cystic duct obstruction, (c) visualization of the gallbladder after cholecystokinin-induced emptying excluded an obs

Gallbladder polyps are a common biliary tract disease whose treatment options have yet to be fully established. The indication of "polyps ≥ 10 mm in diameter" for cholecystectomy increases the possibility of gallbladder excision due to benign polyps. Compared to enumeration of risk factors in clinical guidelines, predictive models based on statistical methods and artificial intelligence provide a more intuitive representation of the malignancy degree of gallbladder polyps. Minimally invasive gallbladder-preserving polypectomy procedures, as a combination of checking and therapeutic approaches

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is widely recognized for its association with gastric diseases. Prior studies on the relationship between H. pylori infection and biliary diseases have faced constraints, including inadequate control of confounding factors and small sample sizes. This study aims to explore the association between H. pylori infection and biliary diseases using a large, population-based sample with adequate control for various covariates.
METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) from 2016 to 2020 was used to investigate the association between H. pylori

A doubled gallbladder recognized in postoperative period is presented. Intraoperatively, accessory bladder was recognized as a Caroli disease. However, we removed true gallbladder due to unavailable intraoperative cholangiography and risk of iatrogenic complications. Unclearly verified finding required MR cholangiography to confirm additional gallbladder.

Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC) is a rare inflammatory disease of the gallbladder with distinct histopathological characteristics. L … be also noted that LC for XGC exhibited a higher conversion rate compared with LC than other benign gallbladder diseases, implying that LC for XGC remains challenging.

CLINICAL ISSUE: Due to the high prevalence of clinically suspected cholecystitis or cholecystolithiasis the gallbladder is one of the organs examined the most by imaging.
STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: In most clinical settings ultrasound is the primary imaging method because of its wide availability, speed and superior spatial resolution. In cases of ambiguous findings or potential complications computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used.
METHODICAL INNOVATIONS: When specific problems arise these imaging modalities may be enhanced by special techniques, e. g. con

Gallstone ileus is a rare presentation of gallbladder disease. It is mostly encountered in female and elderly patients. It occurs when a stone causes a fistula between the gallbladder and the intestinal lumen. More than half of the patients do not have a history of biliary disease. Surgical intervention is still considered the best treatment option; however, the best choice between one-stage and two-stage surgery is still unknown. We present a gallstone Ileus case in a patient with uncommon epidemiological characteristics: a 28-year-old male Hispanic patient without a gallbladder disease histo

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gallbladder perforation (GBP) with cholecystohepatic fistula is an extremely rare complication of acute and/or chronic gallbladder diseases. Niemeier classified GBP into three types each characterized by specific signs and symptoms. Radiological investigations such as abdominal ultrasonography (USG) and computed tomography (CT) are crucial to evaluate and diagnosing GBP, while fistulae are usually identified intraoperatively.

BACKGROUND: Cholecystoduodenal fistula is an infrequent complication of gallbladder diseases. In the majority of cases, the fistula is formed by direct communication between the gallbladder and duodenum due to gallstone impaction in the gallbladder neck. We herein report a rare case of indirect cholecystoduodenal fistula via the hepatoduodenal ligament secondary to gangrenous cholecystitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old woman suspected of having emphysematous cholecystitis by a previous doctor was referred to our hospital for urgent surgery. The initial diagnosis based on additional exami…

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer ranks fifth among oncological diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract; nevertheless, it is the world's most common malignant tumor of the bile ducts. It is usually diagnosed after cholecystectomy and tends to have bad prognosis. Adenocarcinoma is the main histological finding, although other rare histologic types have been described among the actual literature. Poorly differentiated squamous-cell neuroendocrine gallbladder carcinoma is an extremely rare neoplasm. A poor prognosis is associated with this histological type.

Surgery plays a primar … urgery, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard surgical treatment for benign gallbladder diseases. However, the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic surgery for patients with GC remain controversial. Over the past several decades, research has focused on laparoscopic surgery for GC. The disadvantages of laparoscopic surgery include a high inci …

BACKGROUND: Recently, an association has been proposed between cholecystectomy and various liver diseases. Our aim was to determine whether cholecystectomy in short bowel patients influences the risk of liver disease.
METHODS: We reviewed 422 adults: 182 underwent cholecystectomy prior to short bowel, 102 after developing short bowel, and 138 patients still had the gallbladder in place.
RESULTS: Compared to pre and post short bowel, gallbladder patients were significantly less likely to have obesity (18 % and 21 % vs 9 %), central line infections (59 % and 69 % vs 46 %), intestine <60 cm (30

AIM: It is difficult to differentiate gallstone dyspepsia and functional dyspepsia by clinical symptoms and signs. We hypothesized that gallstone dyspepsia was related to abnormal gallbladder motility. We aimed to differentiate gallstone dyspepsia from functional dyspepsia by measuring gallbladder motility.
METHODS: We measured gallbladder volume changes in response to gastric distension (saline 500 mL) and fatty meal in 10 normal volunteers (controls) and 62 patients with gallstones and dyspepsia before cholecystectomy. Forty cholecystectomized patients were symptom free or had improvement (
