A 60-year-old man was hospitalized because of a sudden onset of severe pain in the epigastrium and haematemesis. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed on the basis of an increased serum amylase concentration (642 U/l). Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography demonstrated a necrotic zone with central liquefaction in the tail of the pancreas adjoining the stomach wall. Since the exact mechanisms of the pathogenicity of Campylobacter pylori are not known, we performed an ultrastructural study with the aim of focusing on patterns of possible physical contact between C. pylori and gastric epithelium, and of considering them in relation to the bacterial pathogenicity. A case is reported of massive drug self-poisoning (more than 200 pills associated with slices of oranges) in which repeated gastric lavage failed to empty the stomach. An attempt to split up the amalgamated pills, adherent to the gastric mucosa, by fibre-optic gastroscopy failed and a gastrotomy was required. Endoscopy together with gastric lavage is indicated in certain situations to quickly empty the stomach and so shorten the course of the poisoning. The duodenum or the stomach were involved in 20 (11%) of 177 patients with Crohn's disease. Four patients had no symptoms in the upper gastrointestinal tract, in ten patients pains and gastric disorders recurred. Postoperative alkaline reflux gastritis is a distinct clinical entity occuring after operations enlarging, bypassing or resecting the pylorus. Reflux of alkaline duodenal content into the stomach is the causative factor. Primarily bile acids have an aggressive effect and lead to a destruction of the gastric mucosal barrier. Usually, swallowing of maternal blood is the cause of bloody vomiting in healthy term newborns. Other reported causes include gastritis, esophagitis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer. We report a newborn girl born by cesarean at 372/7 weeks who had hematemesis on postnatal day 1 and hematochezia on day 2. An erythrocyte transfusion was given on day 3. Both dogs had pigmenturia, pallor, regenerative anemia, an inflammatory leukogram, hyperbilirubinemia, hyperamylasemia, and hyperlipasemia. This report describes a new subgroup of familial visceral myopathy. Three patients from within this family were admitted to the hospital with pseudo-obstruction. Barium x-ray, abdominal plain film, esophageal manometry, colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and echocardiography were performed in all siblings for diagnostic evaluation. Seven patients who developed peptic ulceration following renal transplantation have been treated by cimetidine. One died before its value could be assessed. The remaining 6 were symptom-free within 48 h. Serum immunoreactive gastrin is raised in some patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this paper paired samples taken within 30 minutes of each other show that this phenomenon is reproducible.
