Symbolic ableism in health professions education: development and initial psychometric evaluation of the German symbolic ableism scale.

BACKGROUND: Ableist attitudes may undermine equity, quality, and safety of care and may also shape the inclusion of learners and professionals with disabilities. Brief, context-sensitive instruments for health professions education are lacking. This study aimed to develop the German-language Symbolic Ableism Scale (SAS-G) and obtain initial exploratory psychometric evidence among medical and dental students. METHODS: A three-phase instrument-development study was conducted between 2022 and 2024. From the outset, people with disabilities participated directly as experts by experience in constr

Nativity Status Predicts Tobacco Use: A Comparative Analysis of US-Born and Foreign-Born Adults From the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS).

Introduction Tobacco smoking remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally and in the United States (USA). We hypothesize that US-born naturals have higher odds of tobacco smoking compared to their foreign-born counterparts, and our study aims to assess the relationship between nativity status and odds of tobacco smoking using a nationally representative sample. Methods We utilized the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 5 Cycle 1 (2017) and Cycle 2 (2018) for this study. Our main outcome variable was smoking status divided as ever smoker and never smoker.

A Shadow of Doubt: Is There Implicit Bias Among Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty and Residents Regarding Race and Gender?

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic surgery continues to be one of the least diverse medical specialties. Recently, increasing emphasis has been placed on improving diversity in the medical field, which includes the need to better understand existing biases. Despite this, only about 6% of orthopaedic surgeons are women and 0.3% are Black. Addressing diversity, in part, requires a better understanding of existing biases. Most universities and residency programs have statements and policies against discrimination that seek to eliminate explicit biases. However, unconscious biases might negatively impact the

Active use and perceptions of parks as urban assets for physical activity: A mixed-methods study.

Parks are potential key urban assets for improved population health; however, their use is not equal among all social groups. Individual and contextual factors could influence residents' perceptions of parks and how they interact with and, eventually, benefit from them. The use of complementary methodologies provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between park use, physical activity (PA), and residents' perceptions. Thus, we designed a mixed-methods study to analyze differences in park use and PA, and the perceptions of parks as urban assets for PA. We selected six parks from three

Beautiful vulvas: expanding illustrative visual imagery of female genital cutting types.

BACKGROUND: Visual imagery has been used to educate healthcare providers, patients, and the lay public on female genital cutting (FGC) typology and reconstructive procedures. However, culturally inclusive, diverse, and anatomically accurate representation of vulvas informed by women possessing lived experience of FGC is lacking. AIM: We sought to apply World Health Organization (WHO) FGC typology to the development of type-specific visual imagery designed by a graphic artist and culturally informed by women with lived experience of FGC alongside a panel of health experts in FGC-related care.

Rome Consensus Conference - statement; human papilloma virus diseases in males.

BACKGROUND: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very resistant, ubiquitous virus that can survive in the environment without a host. The decision to analyse HPV-related diseases in males was due to the broad dissemination of the virus, and, above all, by the need to stress the importance of primary and secondary prevention measures (currently available for women exclusively). The objective of the Consensus Conference was to make evidence-based recommendations that were designed to facilitate the adoption of a standard approach in clinical practice in Italy. METHODS: The Sponsoring Panel put a ser

Do Disparities in Wait Times to Operative Fixation for Pathologic Fractures of the Long Bones and 30-day Complications Exist Between Black and White Patients? A Study Using the NSQIP Database.

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in outcomes after orthopaedic surgery have been well-documented in the fields of arthroplasty, trauma, and spine surgery; however, little research has assessed differences in outcomes after surgery for oncologic musculoskeletal disease. If racial disparities exist in the treatment of patients with pathologic long bone fractures, then they should be identified and addressed to promote equity in patient care. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) How do wait times between hospital admission and operative fixation for pathologic fractures of long bones differ between Black and n

Health Care Providers' Perspectives on Early Warning Systems for Acute Respiratory Infections in Canada: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) remain a significant global health challenge and are the second leading cause of disease burden and mortality. Early warning systems (EWS) play a key role in detecting clinical deterioration, alerting health care providers (HCPs), and supporting pandemic surveillance. While existing literature highlights HCPs' positive experiences with EWS in confirming clinical assessments and guiding escalation, perspectives on how these systems can be optimized for ARI management remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: As Canada continues to develop and operationali

Understanding Inequalities in Mobile Health Utilization Across Phases: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) holds promise for enhancing patient care, yet attrition in its use remains a major barrier. Low retention rates limit its potential impact, while barriers to accessing or adopting mHealth vary across populations and countries. These differences in utilization of mHealth may exacerbate health inequalities, contributing to the digital health divide. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the factors associated with inequalities in mHealth utilization across different implementation phases, including access, adoptio

Improving menstrual and vaginal health for all (IMVAHA): protocol for a randomised cross-over trial assessing the impact of menstrual products on the vaginal microbiome of women aged 18-35 years in Cameroon, Peru and Switzerland.

INTRODUCTION: Menstrual health is critical to achieving gender equity and reaching the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, yet evidence on the health impacts of menstrual products-particularly on the vaginal microbiota-is limited. The Improving Menstrual and Vaginal Health for All (IMVAHA) project aims to address this knowledge gap through qualitative exploration, a health survey and clinical trial embedded in three sister projects: Laura (Peru), Leke (Cameroon) and Marie (Switzerland). This paper outlines the protocol for the IMVAHA health survey and clinical trial studies, which aim to (1) a…

Multilevel Intervention to Support Tailored and Responsive HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Care in Rural North Carolina: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: While access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an important tool for reducing HIV incidence in the United States, disparities in uptake by race, sex, socioeconomic status, and geography persist. In 2018, the US South accounted for more than half of all new HIV diagnoses but only one-third of PrEP users. PrEP use in North Carolina (NC) similarly lags, with uptake being the lowest among young, sexual and gender minority populations, who account for nearly two-thirds of the state's incident infections. The PrEP-to-need ratio, a metric of PrEP equity that measures PrEP uptake relat

Detecting Parkinson Disease Using a Web-Based Speech Task: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Access to neurological care for Parkinson disease (PD) is a rare privilege for millions of people worldwide, especially in resource-limited countries. In 2013, there were just 1200 neurologists in India for a population of 1.3 billion people; in Africa, the average population per neurologist exceeds 3.3 million people. In contrast, 60,000 people receive a diagnosis of PD every year in the United States alone, and similar patterns of rising PD cases-fueled mostly by environmental pollution and an aging population-can be seen worldwide. The current projection of more than 12 million

Generating Intervention Concepts for Reducing Adolescent Relationship Abuse Inequities Among Sexual and Gender Minority Youth: Protocol for a Web-Based, Longitudinal, Human-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY; eg, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth) are at greater risk than their cisgender heterosexual peers for adolescent relationship abuse (ARA; physical, sexual, or psychological abuse in a romantic relationship). However, there is a dearth of efficacious interventions for reducing ARA among SGMY. To address this intervention gap, we designed a novel web-based methodology leveraging the field of human-centered design to generate multiple ARA intervention concepts with SGMY. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe study procedures for a
