OBJECTIVES: Nucleotide oligomerization domain (NOD) proteins are cytoplasmic receptors that play important roles in host innate immune responses to pathogens by recognizing self or non-self-molecules and have been implicated in many autoimmune diseases including Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The current study investigated whether NOD polymorphisms (NOD1-Glu266Lys, rs2075820, and NOD2- [Arg702Trp, rs2066844 and Gly908Arg, rs2066845]) contribute to ligand sensing and thus affect the susceptibility and/or severity of GBS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We determined single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP

Lactase persistence is an autosomal dominant trait characterized by sustained expression of lactase gene throughout adulthood. This trait is mostly prevalent in populations with pastoral or agro-pastoral ancestry and allows lactase persistent individuals to benefit from milk nutrients. Several genetic variants have been identified to be responsible for lactase persistence in different populations and other genetic variants associated with lactase persistence are expected to be found. In this study, we aimed to investigate the lactase persistence phenotype and genotype in two isolated populatio

Mediterranean Spotted Fever (MSF) is one of the most common spotted fever Rickettsioses. Most cases of MSF follow a benign course, with a minority of cases being fatal. The severity of the infection depends on bacterial virulence, dose and host factors such as effective immune response and genetic background. Herein, we reported data on typing by competitive allele-specific PCR of functionally relevant polymorphisms of genes coding for MyD88 adapter-like (Mal/TIRAP) protein (rs8177374), interleukin(IL)-1 cluster (IL-1A rs1800587, IL-1B rs16944 and rs1143634) and IL-18 (rs187238), which might b

Many causal mechanisms in sepsis susceptibility are largely unknown and the functional genetic polymorphisms (GP) of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their natural tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMP1) could play a role in its development. GPs of MMPs and TIMP (namely MMP-1 rs1799750, MMP-3 rs3025058, MMP-8 rs11225395, MMP-9 rs2234681, and TIMP-1 rs4898) have been compared in 1058 patients with suspected sepsis to assess the association with susceptibility and etiology of sepsis. Prevalence of MMP8 rs11225395 G/G genotype was higher in sepsis patients than in those with non-infective Systemic I

The literature has provided inconsistent findings on the relationship between interleukin IL-1 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Online electronic database searches were performed for relevant research published as of May 2021. Meta-analysis was performed to compare alleles and multiple genetic models (including dominant, recessive, heterozygous, and homozygous models) using random-effects models to reduce the impact of heterogeneity. A 95% confidence interval (95% CI) odds ratio (OR) was used

Pigs from Asia and Europe were independently domesticated from c. 9000 years ago. During this period, strong artificial selection has led to dramatic phenotypic changes in domestic pigs. However, the genetic basis underlying these morphological and behavioural adaptations is relatively unknown, particularly for indigenous Chinese pigs. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis to screen 196 regions with selective sweep signals in Tongcheng pigs, which are a typical indigenous Chinese breed. Genes located in these regions have been found to be involved in lipid metabolism, melanocyte differenti

GM1 gangliosidosis is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations of the β-galactosidase (GLB1) gene. In feline GM1 gangliosidosis, a pathogenic mutation (c.1448G>C) of the feline GLB1 gene was identified in Siamese and Korat cats previously diagnosed with the disease in the USA and Italy, respectively. The present study demonstrated the same mutation in a Siamese cat that had been diagnosed with GM1 gangliosidosis in Japan in the 1960s. The mutation was confirmed using DNA extracted from stored paraffin-embedded brain tissue by a direct sequencing meth
