Communication about genetic testing with breast and ovarian cancer patients: a scoping review.

Genetic testing of patients with cancer is increasingly offered to guide management, resulting in a growing need for oncology health professionals to communicate genetics information and facilitate informed decision-making in a short time frame. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise what is known about health professionals' communication about genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer with cancer patients. Four databases were systematically searched using a recognised scoping review method. Areas and types of research were mapped and a narrative synthesis of the findin

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, classical type: case management.

As the field of genetics expands, there will be more need for health care professionals to possess basic knowledge of genetic conditions and patterns of inheritance to assist their patients and to make the proper referrals. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of genetic connective tissue disorders that affects approximately 1 in 5,000 live births, including males and females of all racial and ethnic groups. The main characteristics of EDS are skin hyperextensibility, tissue fragility, andjoint hypermobility. Diagnosis of EDS is often difficult due to the complexity of symptoms and lack of

Current status of clinical care for familial endocrine tumor syndromes in Japan.

We performed nationwide questionnaire-based surveys to characterize the current status of medical services for endocrine tumor syndromes, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) and von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL), in Japan. About 30% of the respondents had seen patients with either MEN or VHL, but the number of patients most of respondents had encountered was 5 or fewer. On the other hand, a large number of patients had been seen in a few hospitals, which seemed to be the result of the availability of specialists, rather than of geographic location. Although nearly 90% of hospitals had per

Ascertainment and prevention of genetic disease.

A genetic register system has been developed for the ascertainment and prevention of genetic disease. Its potential value is illustrated with data collected from 478 families with serious genetic disorders which had been seen during the past five years. Of these 249 were referred specifically for genetic counselling, autosomal dominant disorders accounting for the largest group of families with individuals at high risk of becoming affected. Of 717 individuals at high risk of having affected children (or carrier daughters in the case of X-linked recessive disorders), only 101 were referred spec

Black and Minority Ethnic women's decision-making for risk reduction strategies after BRCA testing: Use of context and knowledge.

Within the field of breast cancer care, women concerned about their family history are offered genetic testing and subsequent treatment options based on several factors which include but are not limited to personal and family cancer disease histories and clinical guidelines. Discussions around decision-making in genetics in Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups are rarely documented in literature, and information regarding interactions with genetics services is usually discussed and linked to lack of scientific knowledge. As such, counselling sessions based only on scientific and medical info

Genetic Heterogeneity Underlying Familial Short Stature.

Background and Clinical Significance: Familial short stature is a common reason for referral in clinical genetics. While often attributed to a single genetic cause, genetic heterogeneity can complicate diagnosis and management. This report describes a family in which three distinct pathogenic variants in SHOX, PDE4D and ACAN caused overlapping phenotypes of familial short stature. Case Presentation: Clinical, radiological and molecular data were collected retrospectively at the Reference Centre for Constitutional Bone Diseases at Montpellier University Hospital. Targeted gene panels, whole gen

High yield of monogenic short stature in children from Kurdistan, Iraq: A genetic testing algorithm for consanguineous families.

PURPOSE: Genetic testing in consanguineous families advances the general comprehension of pathophysiological pathways. However, short stature (SS) genetics remain unexplored in a defined consanguineous cohort. This study examines a unique pediatric cohort from Sulaimani, Iraq, aiming to inspire a genetic testing algorithm for similar populations. METHODS: Among 280 SS referrals from 2018-2020, 64 children met inclusion criteria (from consanguineous families; height ≤ -2.25 SD), 51 provided informed consent (30 females; 31 syndromic SS) and underwent investigation, primarily via exome sequenci
