Characteristics of Eyes With Asymptomatic Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma With Varying Severity of Visual Field Loss at Presentation.

PRÉCIS: Approximately 38% of 467 asymptomatic primary angle closure glaucoma subjects had severe visual field loss (<-20 dB) at first presentation. Sex-based differences in prevalence and biometry suggest the need for an integrated approach for assessing risk. PURPOSE: To compare the clinical characteristics of patients with asymptomatic primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) across varying disease severity at presentation. METHODS: Of 681 PACG patients recruited, 196 were excluded due to acute primary angle closure and 18 due to pretreatment. Clinical data from 467 patients were analysed, in

Expression of IL-4 and IL-12 in the aqueous humor of patients with chronic primary angle-closure glaucoma.

INTRODUCTION: Angle-closure glaucoma is a common type of glaucoma in Asian populations. However, the role of inflammatory cytokines in angle-closure glaucoma is yet to be elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the expression of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-12 in the aqueous humor of patients with chronic primary angle-closure glaucoma (CPACG) and elucidate the correlations between IL-4 and IL-12 concentrations in the aqueous humor, the degree of visual field defects, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with CPACG. METHODS: Aqueous humor samples were obtained

APOE ε2-Carriers Are Associated with an Increased Risk of Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma in Patients of Saudi Origin.

This study investigated the association between apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphisms (rs429358 and rs7412) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) in a Saudi cohort. Genotyping of 437 DNA samples (251 controls, 92 PACG, 94 PXG) was conducted using PCR-based Sanger sequencing. The results showed no significant differences in the allele and genotype frequencies of rs429358 and rs7412 between the PACG/PXG cases and controls. Haplotype analysis revealed ε3 as predominant, followed by ε4 and ε2 alleles, with no significant variance in PACG/PXG. However,

Comparative of OCT and OCTA parameters in patients with early chronic angle-closure glaucoma and early pituitary adenoma.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) have the potential application in evaluating pathological structural change of the optic nerve. We aimed to evaluate the value of the OCT and OCTA parameters of the optic disk and macular in differentiating early chronic primary angle-closure glaucoma (CPACG) and early pituitary adenoma (PA) in case of mild visual field defects (the mean defect (MD) > 6 dB). The results showed that regarding OCTA parameters, CPACG patients had lower retinal blood flow density of most layers of the optic disk and macular than

Branch retina vein occlusion combined with angle-closure glaucoma is associated with a mutation in BEST1: a case report.

BACKGROUND: It is rare for a patient to be diagnosed with branch retina vein occlusion (BRVO), angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) and autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB). ARB is strongly associated with ACG. Although glaucoma is a significant risk factor for RVO, there is a plausible relationship between ACG and BRVO. To discuss correlation of these diseases is necessary. CASE PRESENTATION: The genetic testing and medical treatment of a patient with ocular fundus diseases and ACG were recorded. We present a 47-year-old male patient with BRVO who was diagnosed with angle-closure glaucoma and

Primary angle-closure glaucoma, a rare but severe complication after blepharoplasty: Case report and review of the literature.

Blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures. Surgical complications are rare, but can have severe consequences, such as permanent vision loss. In this report, we describe a patient who developed primary angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) with associated vision loss after a oculoplastic procedure using local anesthesia. So far, six similar cases have been described in the literature. It is believed that acute ACG is triggered by the surgical procedure in patients with predisposing risk factors such as a cataract. Surgical triggering factors include the use of buffered li

Increased Iris Stiffness in Patients With a History of Angle-Closure Glaucoma: An Image-Based Inverse Modeling Analysis.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that iris mechanical properties may play a role in the pathophysiology of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Such studies, however, were not conducted in vivo and as such were limited in application and scope, especially for the development of diagnostic methods or new treatment options. The purpose of this study was to quantify in vivo iris mechanical properties both in patients with a history of angle-closure glaucoma and in healthy volunteers. METHODS: We acquired optical coherence tomography scans of anterior segments under standard and dim light c

Alteration of the serine protease PRSS56 causes angle-closure glaucoma in mice and posterior microphthalmia in humans and mice.

Angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) is a subset of glaucoma affecting 16 million people. Although 4 million people are bilaterally blind from ACG, the causative molecular mechanisms of ACG remain to be defined. High intraocular pressure induces glaucoma in ACG. High intraocular pressure traditionally was suggested to result from the iris blocking or closing the angle of the eye, thereby limiting aqueous humor drainage. Eyes from individuals with ACG often have a modestly decreased axial length, shallow anterior chamber and relatively large lens, features that predispose to angle closure. Here we show

Anterior-segment retinoblastoma mimicking pseudoinflammatory angle-closure glaucoma: review of the literature and the important role of imaging.

A 7-year-old boy presented with angle-closure glaucoma, initially presumed to be idiopathic. A ciliary body mass was later detected on MR imaging, suggestive of medulloepithelioma but pathologically proved to be diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma. We discuss the patient management and review the literature, with emphasis on the role of CT and MR imaging in evaluating pediatric angle-closure glaucoma and in influencing the management of patients with retinoblastoma and medulloepithelioma.

Research into Glaucoma and Ethnicity (ReGAE) 8: is there a relationship between social deprivation and acute primary angle closure?

OBJECTIVES: Social deprivation as measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) and Townsend scores has been shown to be associated with advanced presentation of primary open angle glaucoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the putative association of social deprivation as a risk factor for acute primary angle closure (APAC) in a UK urban population. METHODS: Case notes of 139 consecutive patients presenting with APAC at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, Birmingham, UK, were examined. Deprivation was scored using the IMD 2004 and Townsend scores. These score were compared w
