Global Prevalence of Mental Health Problems Among Cancer Survivors: A Meta-Analysis From 31 Countries.

BACKGROUND: With the improvement of medical treatment, the survival rate of cancer patients continues to rise; however, their psychological issues require further management. Currently, there is uncertainty regarding the prevalence of mental health problems among cancer survivors. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively summarize the global prevalence of mental health problems in cancer survivors. METHODS: We searched CINAHL, PsychlNFO, Embase, Web of Science, and PubMed for studies reporting the prevalence of various mental health problems in cancer survivors who have survived at least 3 months. Subse

Lower birth rate, greater female dementia risk: global and regional patterns and public health implications.

AIMS: This study investigates the relationship between national birth rate and female dementia incidence globally, considering demographic and socioeconomic confounders. MATERIALS & METHODS: Data from 204 countries were analyzed using bivariate correlation, partial correlation, principal component analysis, and multiple linear regression. Female dementia incidence rate (FDIR) was the dependent variable. Birth rate served as the main predictor, with ageing (life expectancy), genetic predisposition (Biological State Index), economic affluence (GDP PPP), and urban living as confounders. RESULTS

Barriers and Facilitators for Participation in Global Health Research Training Programs Among Underrepresented Minority Groups.

The optimal global health (GH) workforce should be racially and ethnically diverse, yet few persons from historically underrepresented minority (URM) groups in the United States participate in GH training programs. We conducted a study to explore barriers and facilitators for URM individuals to participate in the NIH Fogarty International Center's GH Program for Fellows and Scholars (FGHFS), which offers yearlong international research training opportunities. We used an exploratory sequential mixed methods study design that used qualitative in-depth interviews (n = 18) to inform a subsequent q…

Progressive fibrotic interstitial lung diseases in India: national challenges and implications for global health policies.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) constitute a heterogeneous group of diffuse parenchymal lung disorders characterized by varying degrees of inflammation and fibrosis. Global estimates indicate that the incidence of ILDs has risen by over 50% in the recent years. In India, epidemiological data remain limited and inconsistent due to heterogeneity in diagnostic criteria and regional disparities, impeding accurate burden estimation and policy prioritization. MAIN TEXT: Among ILDs, progressive fibrotic forms, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in particular, cause substantial morbidi

Soft money, hard power: Mapping the material contingencies of change in global health academic structures.

In the proliferating conversations about decolonizing Global Health, a basic assumption has been that global South actors should be the conceptualizers, leaders, and makers of change with global North counterparts thought of as allies or accomplices. This article complicates assumptions about whose responsibility it is to "decolonize" Global Health and how different actors should go about it. We do this through a qualitative anthropological investigation on resource structures and material flows and the ways that global North actors relate to and make sense of them. By outlining the financial …

Women and kidney health: conclusions from a Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Controversies Conference.

The KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) Controversies Conference on Women and Kidney Health was convened to identify key sex and gender issues in kidney care, practices for optimizing healthcare in women with kidney diseases, and priorities for future research. Participants emphasized the importance of addressing the influence of sex and gender in diagnosis, risk assessment, prognosis, and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its complications, as well as considering issues across the lifespan (puberty, sexual and reproductive health, menopause). CKD is a risk factor for

Microbial interactions between climate warming and antimicrobial resistance threaten soil carbon storage and global health.

Anthropogenic activities are impacting the environment in ways that may intersect and have compounding effects. In soil, the spread of antibiotics and resistant microbes, and thereby antimicrobial resistance (AMR), can accelerate because of climate change and anthropogenic activities. Here we propose that the dual production and release of antimicrobial compounds to the environment, and the increase in global temperatures as a consequence of climate change, will have synergistic effects leading to both enhanced climate change and disease risk. We predict that an increase in AMR will reduce mic

Scientific and Public Health Challenges in Folic Acid Supplementation: Insights from Brazil and Global Implications.

Folic acid supplementation during the periconceptional period is a well-established strategy to prevent neural tube defects (NTDs). However, emerging uncertainties surrounding optimal dosage, alternative folate forms, duration of use, and the role of genetic variability have sparked scientific and policy debates. In Brazil, these challenges are amplified by unique contextual factors, including the routine distribution of high-dose folic acid (5000 µg) through the public health system, social vulnerability, low adherence, and limited population-specific evidence for the country's highly admixed

Global burden and health inequalities of sex chromosomal DSDs (1990-2021): a GBD 2021 analysis.

PURPOSE: Globally, epidemiological data on sex chromosomal disorders of sex development (DSDs) remain scarce, prompting this study to examine their global disease burden and health inequalities, with a focus on Klinefelter syndrome (KS) and Turner syndrome (TS). METHODS: We collected data on the incidence and prevalence of KS and TS from the GBD 2021 and analyzed by location, age, and socio-demographic index (SDI), using estimated annual percentage changes, Spearman's correlation analysis, health inequality analysis, and Bayesian age-period-cohort prediction models. The slope index of inequal

Shifting patterns and competing explanations for infectious disease priority in global health agenda setting arenas.

The highly decentralized nature of global health governance presents significant challenges to conceptualizing and systematically measuring the agenda status of diseases, injuries, risks and other conditions contributing to the collective disease burden. An arenas model for global health agenda setting was recently proposed to help address these challenges. Further developing the model, this study aims to advance more robust inquiry into how and why priority levels may vary among the array of stakeholder arenas in which global health agenda setting occurs. We analyse order and the magnitude of…

FISPGHAN statement on the global public health impact of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

As rates of obesity rise worldwide, incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly referred to as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is increasing, worsening the burden of healthcare systems. The council of the Federation of International Societies for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (FISPGHAN) identified the topic of MASLD epidemiology, treatment, and prevention as a global priority issue to be addressed by an expert team, with the goal to describe feasible and evidence-based actions that may contribute to reducing MASLD risk. The

Top 10 public health challenges to track in 2023: Shifting focus beyond a global pandemic.

The year 2022 saw COVID-19 as the primary public health concern, with vaccine rollout and mandates at the forefront. Other viral infectious diseases, such as Monkeypox and Ebola, emerged as public health concerns. Climate change and political conflicts significantly impacted global health, increasing the demand for humanitarian assistance and protection. In 2023, it remains crucial to identify global and public health priority areas to coordinate and implement effective solutions. Through discussions with public health practitioners and researchers, we have identified key priority areas for 20…

Epidemiology, host range, and associated risk factors of monkeypox: an emerging global public health threat.

Based on recent multiregional epidemiological investigations of Monkeypox (MPX), on 24 July 2022, the World Health Organization declared it a global public health threat. Retrospectively MPX was an ignored zoonotic endemic infection to tropical rainforest regions of Western and Central African rural communities until a worldwide epidemic in May 2022 verified the potential threat of monkeypox virus (MPXV) to be propagated across the contemporary world via transnational tourism and animal movements. During 2018-2022, different cases of MPX diagnosed in Nigerian travelers have been documented in

Maternal immunisation against Group B Streptococcus: A global analysis of health impact and cost-effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) can cause invasive disease (iGBS) in young infants, typically presenting as sepsis or meningitis, and is also associated with stillbirth and preterm birth. GBS vaccines are under development, but their potential health impact and cost-effectiveness have not been assessed globally. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We assessed the health impact and value (using net monetary benefit (NMB), which measures both health and economic effects of vaccination into monetary units) of GBS maternal vaccination in an annual cohort of 140 million pregnant women across 183 countri

Progress of public health policy regarding global infectious diseases over the past decade in Japan.

This article aims to examine progress of public health policy regarding global infectious diseases over the past decade in Japan. A narrative review was conducted, overviewing items of the Infectious Disease Committee and the Tuberculosis Committee of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare between 2010 and 2019. The mean value of items discussed in each meeting were 9.7 items. Among these items, these committees have discussed about countermeasures in terms of reduced burden of indigenous infectious diseases such as measles, rubella and pertussis, and increased risk of imported infectious

Ebola Virus Epidemic in West Africa: Global Health Economic Challenges, Lessons Learned, and Policy Recommendations.

The Ebola virus has spread across several Western Africa countries, adding a significant financial burden to their health systems and economies. In this article the experience with Ebola is reviewed, and economic challenges and policy recommendations are discussed to help curb the impact of other diseases in the future. The West African Ebola virus disease epidemic started in resource-constrained settings and caused thousands of fatalities during the last epidemic. Nevertheless, given population mobility, international travel, and an increasingly globalized economy, it has the potential to re-

Evolution of ebola virus disease from exotic infection to global health priority, Liberia, mid-2014.

Over the span of a few weeks during July and August 2014, events in West Africa changed perceptions of Ebola virus disease (EVD) from an exotic tropical disease to a priority for global health security. We describe observations during that time of a field team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and personnel of the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. We outline the early epidemiology of EVD within Liberia, including the practical limitations on surveillance and the effect on the country's health care system, such as infections among health care workers. During this…
