Health and safety in clinical laboratory practice in Ibadan, Nigeria.

The economic implications of safety precautions in laboratory practice make compliance difficult especially for laboratories in countries with poor economies. However, economic factors are not the only determinants of a safe work environment. Worker's perception of health and safety also influence compliance with safety guidelines. This study was conducted to determine the attitude and practice of laboratory workers with regard to safety. A structured questionnaire was administered to laboratory workers in 10 clinical laboratories. The questionnaire inquired about the use of protective equipme

Is Your Surgical Helmet System Compromising the Sterile Field? A Systematic Review of Contamination Risks and Preventive Measures in Total Joint Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Surgical helmet systems remain widely used in total joint arthroplasty (TJA) despite evidence to suggest that they may increase infection risk via contamination of sterile equipment and operating room air. However, the challenging nature of conducting high-quality clinical trials to study outcomes with low incidence, such as prosthetic joint infection (PJI), has made drawing definitive conclusions from the available experimental studies difficult. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the best available evidence is needed to clarify the association between surgical helmet system u

Assessment of worker chemical exposures in California vape shops.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid mixture to make an aerosol that is inhaled, or vaped, by the user. Vape shops are retail environments designed to fulfill customer demand for diverse e-liquid flavors and hardware options, which create unique worker exposure concerns. To characterize exposures to vape shop workers, especially to flavoring chemicals associated with known respiratory toxicity, this study recruited vape shops from the San Francisco Bay Area. In six shops, we measured air concentrations for volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, flavoring chemicals, a

A quantitative approach for estimating exposure to pesticides in the Agricultural Health Study.

We developed a quantitative method to estimate long-term chemical-specific pesticide exposures in a large prospective cohort study of more than 58000 pesticide applicators in North Carolina and Iowa. An enrollment questionnaire was administered to applicators to collect basic time- and intensity-related information on pesticide exposure such as mixing condition, duration and frequency of application, application methods and personal protective equipment used. In addition, a detailed take-home questionnaire was administered to collect further intensity-related exposure information such as maint

[Campaign of labour inspections on the implementation of protection measures against carcinogenic agents in fuel station workers].

Following the reduction in levels of exposure to benzene over the last few decades, the cancer risk of refuelers currently represents an occupational hygiene issue potentially underestimated by employers and workers themselves. Based on the literature data, the occurrence of adverse effects of neoplastic nature can not actually be excluded in this professional category, since it is not possible to define a threshold dose. In the period 2016 - 2019, an extensive focused campaign of labour inspections was conducted in the province of Bari by the OSH inspection services of the Health Local Author

Role of Infection Prevention and Control Practices in Preventing COVID-19 Reinfection Among Healthcare Workers: A Single-Centre Experience From North India.

INTRODUCTION: The emergence of COVID-19 surges, exposing healthcare workers (HCWs) to the risk of COVID-19 reinfection, raises the alarm and prompts the search for the most effective infection prevention and control (IPC) practices to promote and sustain their rationalised use. We aimed to assess the role of individual IPC practices in preventing COVID-19 reinfection among HCWs. METHODS: This was a hospital-based, cross-sectional study conducted during the pandemic that included consenting HCWs involved in COVID care with RTPCR-confirmed COVID-19 infection. We used a self-developed, pre-teste

Reducing Morbidity and Mortality Rates from COVID-19, Influenza and Pneumococcal Illness in Nursing Homes and Long-Term Care Facilities by Vaccination and Comprehensive Infection Control Interventions.

The COVID-19 pandemic identifies the problems of preventing respiratory illnesses in seniors, especially frail multimorbidity seniors in nursing homes and Long-Term Care Facilities (LCTFs). Medline and Embase were searched for nursing homes, long-term care facilities, respiratory tract infections, disease transmission, infection control, mortality, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. For seniors, there is strong evidence to vaccinate against influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and pneumococcal disease, and evidence is awaited for effectiveness against COVID-19 variants and when to revaccinate. There is st

YOLOv10-based multi-scale variant object detection for multi-category PPE non-compliance monitoring on construction sites.

Multi-category Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) non-compliance monitoring on construction sites remains challenging because visual cues for missing PPE often appear at multiple scales, particularly as small objects. To address these challenges, an enhanced YOLOv10-based detector is developed that incorporates Omni-Dimensional Dynamic Convolution (ODConv) to strengthen fine-grained feature representation, an Efficient Multi-scale Attention-guided Bidirectional Feature Pyramid Network (EMA-BiFPN) to improve cross-scale fusion, a four-scale prediction strategy to increase sensitivity to extrem

Evaluation of rule changes affecting head contact in North American professional ice hockey using video review of head impact frequency and magnitude between 2003-04 and 2016-17 seasons.

Ice hockey is a sport with a high incidence of concussion, but growing attention has been placed on the broader exposure to head impacts, regardless of clinical symptoms, due to their potential cumulative effects. While player education, protective equipment, and rule modifications have been introduced to reduce head impact risk, the effect of rule changes on head impact exposure in adult professional ice hockey has not been well quantified. This study compared the frequency and magnitude of head impacts between two NHL seasons of 2003-04 and 2016-17, that bracketed a period of rule changes ta
