Extended-spectrum-β-lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria are associated with high mortality in children with bloodstream infections in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

OBJECTIVES: Studies from Tanzania show rising prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) amongst key bacterial pathogens. We aimed to look at the clinical impact of bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by ESBL producing Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). This study was carried out on hospitalised children aged less than five years from four hospitals of the region of Dar es Salaam. METHODS: The study included 135 hospitalized children with BSI due to GNB which were screened for ESBL. Clinical outcome i.e., death or discharge, was known for 130 children of which 12% (n = 15) died We used uni…

In vitro activity of cefiderocol against carbapenemase-producing and meropenem-non-susceptible Gram-negative bacteria collected in the Japan Antimicrobial Resistant Bacterial Surveillance.

OBJECTIVES: The treatment options available for infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens are often limited. Cefiderocol (CFDC) is a novel siderophore cephalosporin that exhibits activity against these pathogens. Several studies have reported the in vitro activity of CFDC against isolates from Europe, the United States, and China, but the activity against carbapenem-resistant bacteria with IMP-type carbapenemase has not been extensively studied. We, therefore, studied the in vitro activities of CFDC against carbapenem-resistant bacteria with available genomic backgrounds

Gram-Negative ESKAPE Bacteria Surveillance in COVID-19 Pandemic Exposes High-Risk Sequence Types of Acinetobacter baumannii MDR in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

The interruption of bacteriological surveillance due to the COVID-19 pandemic brought serious consequences, such as the collapse of health systems and the possible increase in antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to know the rate of resistance and its associated mechanisms in bacteria causing hospital infections during the pandemic. The aim of this work was to show the phenotypic and molecular characteristics of antimicrobial resistance in ESKAPE bacteria in a Mexican tertiary care hospital in the second and third years of the pandemic. For this purpose, during 2021 and 2022, t
