Two bacterial strains isolated from chicken caecum, C46T and C47, were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach that included analysis of the phenotypic and biochemical features, cellular fatty acid profiles, menaquinone profiles and phylogenetic position (using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis). The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that these strains belonged to the family Porphyromonadaceae. These strains shared 100 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with each other and were related to Parabacteroides distasonis (showing 86 % sequence similarity). The strains were found to b

BACKGROUND: The high frequency of Streptococcus pneumoniae as a cause of bacteraemia in homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease and its effective prevention has led to the routine use of pneumococcal prophylaxis in developed countries. The reported infrequency of this organism as a cause of bacteraemia in SS disease in Africa raises questions on the epidemiology of bacterial infection and on the need for pneumococcal prophylaxis in that continent.
METHODS: A study of blood cultures in 155 Ugandan children (165 episodes) with SS disease and axillary temperatures of > or =38 degrees C, attending th

Eubacterium nodatum is an obligately anaerobic, gram-positive, branching rod that markedly resembles Actinomyces, particularly Actinomyces israelii, in its cellular and colonial characteristics. Its isolation from the female genital tract was examined for a study period in which use of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) was common, and additional characteristics of the organism were investigated. Fifteen genital isolates of E nodatum were all associated with the presence of a foreign body, usually an IUD (12 patients). Six of these 12 patients had presented with clinically severe pelvic

Two Gram-staining positive, aerobic, non-motile, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacteria, designated strains SI92T and SI8, respectively, were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tobacco collected from south-western China. Strain SI92T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity to Paenibacillus silvestris (97.9%) and Paenibacillus phytorum (97.9%), and strain SI8 showed the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity with P. phytorum (98.0%). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains SI92T and SI8 clustered with the genus Paenibacillus and formed a distinct subclade.

Flagella are large transenvelope nanomachines but how they transit the peptidoglycan in gram-positive bacteria is poorly understood. A recent model suggested that flagellar basal bodies diffuse in the membrane and become captured at locations in the peptidoglycan with a pore diameter that could accommodate the axle-like flagellar rod. To test the role of pore size on flagellar assembly, cells were disrupted for penicillin binding protein 1 (PBP1/PonA), a cell wall synthesis protein thought to decrease peptidoglycan pore frequency and/or diameter. The absence of PBP1 in the ancestral strain of

BACKGROUND: Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic gram-positive rod that colonizes the gastrointestinal and female genital tracts. It is an uncommon cause of bacteremia but is associated with high mortality when present. The most commonly reported sources include intraabdominal infections, soft tissue necrosis, and malignancy-related processes. Most affected patients are elderly or immunocompromised. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of C. perfringens bacteremia in a 52-year-old postmenopausal female with no history of malignancy, recent surgery, or immunosuppression. The patient presente

Listeria (L.) ivanovii is a Gram-positive, facultatively intracellular rod-shaped bacterium. It is predominantly associated with animal infections, particularly in ruminants. Unlike L. monocytogenes, which is widely recognised as a major zoonotic and foodborne pathogen, L. ivanovii is often overlooked, despite documented cases of abortion, stillbirth, and neonatal septicemia in sheep, goats, and cattle. This review provides an overview of L. ivanovii taxonomy, microbiological characteristics, virulence determinants, host adaptation, epidemiology, transmission routes, diagnostic challenges, ant

Necrotizing soft tissue diseases are severe, rapidly progressive infections characterized by tissue destruction and toxemia, often leading to death. Although common in livestock, myonecrosis caused by toxinogenic clostridial species is rarely reported in dogs. This study reports a case of myonecrosis in a male mongrel dog attacked by stray dogs, which subsequently developed a Clostridium septicum infection. The dog, prostrate and in contact with the ground, was brought for treatment two days post-attack, presenting multiple bite wounds, particularly on the pelvic limbs and scrotum, and a scrot

BACKGROUND: Tropheryma whipplei (T. whipplei) is a rod-shaped, Gram-positive, acid-fast bacterium. Classical Whipple's disease, a rare chronic infectious condition affecting multiple systems, is traditionally attributed to T. whipplei infection. The conventional treatment regimen consists of a one-year course of oral doxycycline (100 mg twice daily) and hydroxychloroquine (600 mg daily), followed by lifelong doxycycline maintenance therapy. However, the literature lacks discussion on short-term antimicrobial treatment for acute T. whipplei infections, such as pulmonary abscesses caused by this

Cutibacterium acnes, previously known as Propionibacterium acnes, is a gram-positive rod in the pilosebaceous glands and commonly implicated in acne vulgaris. Its role in prosthetic joint infections, particularly in shoulder surgeries, has recently gained attention due to its prevalence around the shoulder girdle. This review collates evidence on the pathogenic role of C. acnes in shoulder surgeries, discussing preventive measures, risk factors, clinical presentation, investigation, and treatment strategies. C. acnes infections are complex, often presenting with non-specific symptoms and delay

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is an anaerobic, spore-forming Gram-positive rod responsible for necrotizing gangrene, bacteremia in patients with cancer or gastrointestinal tract infection. C. perfringens virulence is due in large part to toxin production. In 2014, a new enterotoxin, BEC (binary enterotoxin of Clostridium perfringens) encoded by becA and becB genes, distinct from enterotoxin (CPE) encoded by the cpe gene, has been described. BEC-producing strains can be causative agents of acute gastroenteritis in humans. We present herein the case of a 64-year-old man who presented

ANAMNESIS: The 68-year-old patient presented with fever, general malaise and physical weakness in neutropenia during a known relapse of acute myeloid leukaemia after allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
TREATMENT/DIAGNOSIS: Due to immune suppression, an empiric antibiotic therapy with piperacillin/tazobactam was started. The 4MRGN screening was positive. For this reason, therapy was switched empirically to ceftazidime/avibactam plus colistin. A tongue ulcer with abscess formation and phlegmonous soft tissue reaction was revealed as the focus of the infection. Several microbiological probes i

Aeromonas spp. are widely distributed in surface water, sewage, untreated and chlorinated, drinking water, as well as meats, fish, shellfish, poultry, and their products. A disease caused by Aeromonas spp. is designated as aeromoniasis. It can affect different aquatic animals, mammals, and birds in different geographic regions. Moreover, gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal disease conditions may be provoked in humans as a result of food poising with Aeromonas spp. Some Aeromonas spp. have been identified, however, Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila), A. caviae, and A. veronii bv sobria may

Two Gram-reaction-negative strains, designated as B13T and MA2-2, were isolated from two different aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading enrichment cultures and characterized using a polyphasic approach to determine their taxonomic position. The two strains had identical 16S rRNA gene sequences and were most closely related to Pinisolibacter ravus E9T (97.36 %) and Siculibacillus lacustris SA-279T (96.33 %). Cells were facultatively aerobic rods and motile with a single polar flagellum. The strains were able to degrade ethylbenzene as sole source of carbon and energy. The assembled genome of strain B

Lactobacillus is a facultative anaerobic Gram-positive rod usually found in the normal microbiota of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract. Frequently dismissed as a contaminant, it is implicated in several diseases. We describe a rare case of endocarditis caused by Lactobacillus jensenii in an immunocompetent 40 year-old male patient, with a history of mitral valve repair. He presented complaining of asthenia and his laboratory results showed a moderate increase in inflammatory markers. A trans-thoracic echocardiography confirmed a vegetation on the posterior leaflet of the mitral valv

Initially isolated from the alimentary canal of a Japanese corbicula clam, Oscillibacter valericigenes is a Gram-negative rod, of which culture remains very difficult. Herein we present the first case of bacteremia due to Oscillibacter valericigenes, in humans. A 55-year-old man was hospitalized for clinical management of multiple neglected leg wounds (colonized with maggots) that had occurred during a motorcycle accident. Following radiological confirmation of the bone infection, a transfemoral amputation was performed to limit the risk of extended infection. During hospitalization, before th

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is Gram-positive anaerobic, spore-forming rod-shaped bacterial pathogen that is widely distributed in nature. This bacterium is known as the causative agent of a foodborne illness and of gas gangrene. While the major virulence factors are the α-toxin and perfringolysin O (PFO) produced by type A strains of C. perfringens, the precise mechanisms of how these toxins induce the development of gas gangrene are still not well understood. In this study, we analyzed the host responses to these toxins, including inflammasome activation, using mouse bone marrow-

More than a century has elapsed since the identification of Clostridia neurotoxins as the cause of paralytic diseases. Clostridium botulinum is a heterogeneous group of Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming, obligate anaerobic bacteria that produce a potent neurotoxin. Eight different Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins have been described (A-H) and 5 of those cause disease in humans. These toxins cause paralysis by blocking the presynaptic release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. Advantage can be taken of this blockade to alleviate muscle spams due to excessive neural activity
