Use and Abuse of Electrocautery in Adenoidectomy Hemostasis.

Background and objectives: Bipolar electrocautery is commonly used to control bleeding after cold-instrument pediatric adenoidectomy, but th … electrocautery was used for hemostasis. A significantly higher incidence of posterior neck pain and halitosis (oral malodor) was noted in the patients in whom electrocautery was used for adenoidectomy hemostasis. Conclusions: Bipolar electrocautery use should be limited during pediatric adenoidectomy hemostasis because of the possible side effects: longer p …

On the Association between Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Extragastric Manifestations.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and extragastric manifestations such as hea … least one gastrointestinal symptom (e.g., nausea, belching, abdominal tenderness, epigastric pain, halitosis, flatulence, diarrhea, bad odor of flatulence, flatulence, and constipation). A standardized questionnaire was used to collect demographic data (such as age, weight, and height), patients' symptoms, laboratory findings (gastric biopsy, gastroscopy, …

Adverse events of coblation or microdebrider in pediatric adenoidectomy: A retrospective analysis in 468 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a common clinical disease that can cause serious complications if … th significantly reduced blood loss and operation time. However, incidence of fever, neck pain, and halitosis were significantly lower in the microdebrider adenoidectomy group (p < .01). The difference in the postoperative primary and secondary hemorrhage between the two groups was not statistically significant (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Coblation adenoidectom …

Differences in self-reported symptoms in patients with chronic odontogenic and non-odontogenic rhinosinusitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the possible differences in self-reported symptoms between patients with chronic odontogenic rhinosinusitis (CORS) and … mptom score showed that odontogenic group had a significantly higher score for fever (p = .004) and halitosis (p = .003). CONCLUSION: Halitosis and fever might be the most important symptoms in differentiating between CORS and CnORS symptomatology. Better diagnostic tools, such as VAS symptom score might help medical professionals to be quicker at recogniz …

[Application and effect of enhanced recovery after surgery in early rehabilitation of oral cancer patients after operation].

PURPOSE: To explore the application and effect of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in early rehabilitation of oral cancer patients after operation. METHODS: Ninety cases of oral cancer admitted from January 2016 to December 2017 were randomly divided into two groups. 45 cases of oral cancer in the experimental group received ERAS nursing after operation, and another 45 patients received routine nursing after operation. The sleep duration, pain and halitosis 3 days after operation; the first time to get out of bed, the length of hospitalization; and the level of albumin and other laborat…

In vitro antimicrobial effects of two antihalitosis mouth rinses on oral pathogens and human tongue microbiota.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to compare the antimicrobial activity of a mouth rinse containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride (MR1) with a stannous fluoride-based mouth rinse (MR2) in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples of the tongues from 10 subjects with and 10 subjects without halitosis were inoculated on blood agar plates. The agar was perforated, and the cylindrical holes were filled either with mouth rinse MR1 or with mouth rinse MR2. After incubation, inhibition zones of the whole tongue microbiota and Fusobacterium nucleatum were measured. In addition, MR1 and MR…

The influence of different factors on the oral health status of smoking and nonsmoking adults.

AIM: The aim of this study to determine the influence of smoking on self-reported oral health status among university students. MATERIALS A … stically, significant association was proven between smoking and gender (p < 0.01); and smoking and halitosis (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Smoking is significantly related to esthetics, calculus, tooth stains, halitosis, gingival bleeding, and gender with p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p = 0.05, and p < 0.01 respectively.

Effect of Long-term Smoking on Whole-mouth Salivary Flow Rate and Oral Health.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Change in the resting whole-mouth salivary flow rate (SFR) plays a significant role in patho-genesis of various oral co … groups (p=0.0001). Oral lesions including cervical caries, gingivitis, tooth mobility, calculus and halitosis were significantly higher in smokers. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that long-term smoking would significantly reduce SFR and increase oral and dental disorders associated with dry mouth, especially cervical caries, gingivitis, tooth mobility, …

Antimicrobial effects of a new therapeutic liquid dentifrice formulation on oral bacteria including odorigenic species.

The control of oral malodor is well-recognized in efforts to improve oral health. Antimicrobial formulations can mitigate oral malodor, however, procedures to assess effects on oral bacteria including those implicated in halitosis are unavailable. This investigation examined the antimicrobial effects of a new liquid triclosan/copolymer dentifrice (test) formulation that demonstrated significant inhibition of oral malodor in previous organoleptic clinical studies. Procedures compared antimicrobial effects of the test and control formulations on a range of oral micro-organisms including members …

Introduction to the proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Breath Odour Research.

These proceedings represent a sample of the many fine papers that were presented at the Fifth International Conference on Breath Odour Research held in Tokyo on 2-3 July 2001. Space limitations precluded publication of all the papers, and the ones selected illustrate the diversity of approaches and the international nature of breath odour research.
