BACKGROUND: Mandible tumors are very rare. One of the main methods of the treatments is resection of the tumor and then reconstruction of the mandible. The donor site is often distant tissue-fibula or ilium. Following this, it is necessary to improve the patient in two ways, on one hand restoring the function of the mandible, and on the other hand, improving the donor site area. For that reason, physiotherapy after tumor resection and reconstruction of the mandible is very complicated. The aim of this bibliographic review was to find the methods of the reconstruction of the mandible in the con

INTRODUCTION: Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is emerging as a non-invasive biomarker in solid organ transplantation (SOT) monitoring and data on its diagnostic potential have been increasing in recent years. This review aims to summarize the main advances in technologies, clinical applications and future perspectives of cfDNA for transplantation, and to approach the contribution of epigenetics to improve the specific detection of rejection.
METHODS: Published literature investigating cfDNA as a biomarker for the diagnosis of transplant rejection was systematically reviewed, specifically cl

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (VitD) deficiency is associated with several diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory infection, and so forth. In the field of transplantation (kidney transplantation), some studies reported that patients with VitD deficiency are of increased chance of acute rejection, but other studies did not show such a chance. On the other hand, since VitD is a modulatory factor and can reduce the inflammatory response, understanding the exact role of it in transplantation may contribute to tolerance condition in these patients.

Compared to immunocompetent individuals, solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) develop a weaker immune response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and vaccination. Although anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines can prevent symptomatic and severe disease, the SOTR population remains at risk as long as SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate. To protect transplanted patients against severe COVID-19, two primary preventive strategies have been proposed: anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with monoclonal antibodies that possess neutralizing acti

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections caused by the cytomegalovirus are one of the most common problems in patients after kidney transplant. We examined the association of the relationship between the number and activity of natural killer cells with increased cytomegalovirus and its related disease after kidney transplantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this analytical study, 58 new transplant patients in the Labbafinejad Hospital, who did not have any evidence of CMV infection, were evaluated based on the number and percentage of CD56+/16+, CD56+/16-, and CD69+ Natural Killer (NK) cell

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) in transplant recipients are very rare and only a handful of cases have been reported to date. Here we present the first known case of a huge GIST in a kidney transplant recipient with perforation of small intestine.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old male presented at our hospital with right colic pain; he had received an ABO incompatible kidney transplant 6 years earlier and was treated with cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, and methylprednisolone. Radiological evaluation revealed a huge (11 cm in diameter) solitary tumor at the small int

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral transplantation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can ameliorate behavioral deficits in animal models of stroke. How the ischemic lesion affects the survival of the transplanted cells, their proliferation, migration, differentiation, and function is only partly understood.
METHODS: Here we have assessed the influence of the stroke-induced injury on grafts of human skin iPSCs-derived long-term neuroepithelial-like stem cells using transplantation into the rostral migratory stream (RMS), adjacent to the neurogenic subventricular zone, in adult rats as a m

BACKGROUND: The deceased-donor kidney pool consists of 2 different populations: multiple-organ donors (MOD) and kidney donors alone (KDA). In MOD, more complicated procedure and lowest priority for kidney procurement may affect graft survival. On the other hand, poor donor status and higher comorbidity are more frequent in KDA transplants. The aim of this study was to provide detailed characteristics of the 2 groups of kidney donors (KDA vs MOD) in our center and to analyze the potential influence of the donor type on the early and long-term kidney graft function and recipient outcome.

BACKGROUND: Imatinib is a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor; for which there is limited information regarding its effects on AIDS Kaposi's sarcoma and none in patients with transplant-associated Kaposi's sarcoma. Sirolimus, an immunosuppressive drug used for kidney transplant, exhibits antiangiogenic activity related to impaired production of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), clinical benefit has been reported in Kaposi's sarcoma associated with renal graft.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of an 80 year old male, who developed Kaposi's Sarcoma nine months after receiving a living no

A severe shortage of organs is perhaps the most important obstacle facing transplantation today. In an attempt to address this serious problem, several transplant centers have suggested a reconsideration of genetically unrelated living kidney donors. Recently, there have been reports of excellent results using such unconventional donors, and cogent arguments have been made that this approach is ethically acceptable, at least when the donor is motivated by altruism. To see what impact this new information has had on the transplant community, I mailed a questionnaire to all adult renal transplan

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia, defined as loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, often progresses to frailty and is associated with unfavorable post-transplant outcomes. Frailty is characterized by diminished physiological capacity and increased vulnerability. On the other hand, kidney transplantation is associated with lower mortality rates and improved quality of life. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of frailty status using two different methods in kidney transplant (KT) recipients, to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and frailty status, and to identify fac

BACKGROUND: In the first posttransplant month, the most frequent complications are due to technical problems related to complex vascular and bile duct reconstructions during the operation. Moreover, despite great improvements in suturing technique and materials, severe organ ischemia-reperfusion caused by time-consuming hand suturing is still an important factor in graft survival. During the operation, severe hypotension, hypoxic acidosis, hyperkalemia, and renal dysfunction may occur during the anhepatic phase due to the prolonged venous clamping time required for hand suturing. Therefore, ha

An adequate balance between electrolytes and clear water is of paramount importance to maintaining physiologic homeostasis. Natremia imbalance and, in particular, hyponatremia is the most frequent electrolyte abnormality observed in hospitalized subjects, involving approximately one-fourth of them. Pathological changes occurring during liver cirrhosis predispose patients to an increased risk of sodium imbalance, and hypervolemic hyponatremia has been reported in nearly 50% of subjects with severe liver disease and ascites. Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly curable malignancy involving lymph nodes and the lymphatic system. Even at late stage disease, about 70% of patients will be cured with standard first line therapy. For patients who experience relapse or refractory classical Hodgkin lymphoma, the standard treatment option is high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell rescue or transplant. However about 50% of patients will have recurrence after high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell rescue or transplantation and have worse prognosis with median overall survival of 32% at 5 years.
