Evaluation of training in guideline-oriented biopsychosocial management of low back pain in occupational health services: Protocol of a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: To prevent low back pain (LBP) from developing into a prolonged disabling condition, clinical guidelines advocate early stage assessment, risk-screening, and tailored interventions. Occupational health services recommend guideline-oriented biopsychosocial screening and individualized assessment and management. However, it is not known whether training a limited number of health care professionals improves the management process. The primary objective of this study is to investigate whether training in the biopsychosocial practice model is effective in reducing disability. Furthermo

Establishing a health-based recommended occupational exposure limit for nitrous oxide using experimental animal data - A systematic review protocol.

Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is widely used as inhalation analgesic and anaesthetic in medical, paramedical, and veterinary practice. Previous evaluations resulted in classification of N 2 O as a possible risk factor for adverse reproductive health outcomes based on evidence from animal data. Available human data were considered inadequate, partly due to the possibility that other risk factors, such as co-exposures to other inhalation anaesthetics may have contributed to the adverse outcomes. As no substantial new human evidence has emerged since previous evaluations, this protocol describes a planne

Lifetime exposure to self-reported occupational noise and prevalent rheumatoid arthritis in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2012).

Multiple risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been studied, but there is a dearth of research on occupational noise, which is highly prevalent in the United States (U.S.). This study aimed to determine whether occupational noise exposure was associated with an elevated risk of prevalent RA in the U.S. general population. Data from the 2011 to 2012 cross-sectional, population-based National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for secondary analysis. Self-reported lifetime exposure to very loud noise was linked to self-reported doctor-diagnosed RA in a sample of 4192 par

Smoking, Smoking Cessation, and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes among Japanese Adults: Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

AIMS: To examine the association of smoking status, smoking intensity, and smoking cessation with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) using a large database. METHODS: The present study included 53,930 Japanese employees, aged 15 to 83 years, who received health check-up and did not have diabetes at baseline. Diabetes was defined as fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dl, random plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dl, HbA1c ≥6.5% (≥48 mmol/mol), or receiving medication for diabetes. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used to investigate the association between smoking and the risk of diabetes. RESUL

Development of Risk Score for Predicting 3-Year Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes: Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

OBJECTIVE: Risk models and scores have been developed to predict incidence of type 2 diabetes in Western populations, but their performance may differ when applied to non-Western populations. We developed and validated a risk score for predicting 3-year incidence of type 2 diabetes in a Japanese population. METHODS: Participants were 37,416 men and women, aged 30 or older, who received periodic health checkup in 2008-2009 in eight companies. Diabetes was defined as fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≥ 126 mg/dl, random plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dl, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5%, or receiving med

[Approach to easing occupational stress for high-stress workers: applying the brief job stress questionnaire to workplace mental health promotion].

We investigated job stress among 442 employees from 19 divisions in a Japanese company using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. Job stress of the employees was estimated by the score for total health risk. Among the 19 divisions, two divisions showed over 120 points of mean total health risk score. Intervention with a stress-reduction program was carried out in these 2 divisions. First, to assess the job stress, health care staff interviewed all workers in the 2 divisions. Second, the results of the interviews were reported to the divisions' managers. Third, the managers applied the best reme

Design of a randomized controlled trial on the effects of counseling of mental health problems by occupational physicians on return to work: the CO-OP-study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems often lead to prolonged sick leave. In primary care, the usual approach towards these patients was the advice to take rest and not return to work before all complaints had disappeared. When complaints persist, these patients are often referred to psychologists from primary and specialized secondary care. As an alternative, ways have been sought to activate the Dutch occupational physician (OP) in primary care. Early 2000, the Dutch Association of Occupational Physicians (NVAB) published a guideline concerning the management by OPs of employees with mental hea

On the rumors about the silent spring. Review of the scientific evidence linking occupational and environmental pesticide exposure to endocrine disruption health effects.

Occupational exposure to some pesticides, and particularly DBCP and chlordecone, may adversely affect male fertility. However, apart from the therapeutic use of diethylstilbestrol, the threat to human reproduction posed by "endocrine disrupting" environmental contaminants has not been supported by epidemiological evidence thus far. As it concerns other endocrine effects described in experimental animals, only thyroid inhibition following occupational exposure to amitrole and mancozeb has been confirmed in humans. Cancer of the breast, endometrium, ovary, prostate, testis, and thyroid are hormo

Occupational asthma in Europe and other industrialised areas: a population-based study. European Community Respiratory Health Survey Study Group.

BACKGROUND: There are no large population-based studies on occupational asthma, and few estimates of the proportion of asthma attributed to occupation, even though asthma is the most common occupational respiratory disorder in industrialised countries. METHODS: We assessed data on 15,637 people aged 20-44, randomly selected from the general population of 26 areas in 12 industrialised countries. Asthma was assessed by methacholine challenge test and by questionnaire data on respiratory symptoms and use of medication. Occupation was defined by job-titles and a job exposure matrix was constructe

Prevalence of serum precipitins against microbes in mouldy hay, and of chronic bronchitis and farmer's lung with respect to farmers' occupational health hazards.

During the farmers' occupational health study 1979-82, the work conditions of 3,358 randomly selected farmers were investigated with respect to occurrence of work-related health hazards. The farmers also underwent a health examination in their local health centre, and precipitating antibodies against four microbes present in mouldy hay were analyzed. Results of the precipitin tests and the symptoms of chronic bronchitis and farmer's lung were analyzed with respect to the occurrence of work-related exposures to biological agents and dust in farming. The prevalence of antibodies against Aspergil

Felt and expressed needs regarding occupational health services from the perspective of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the changing need for health care and prevention due to climate, digital and demographic change, occupational health services are of enormous relevance, as many people can be reached. Of particular interest are the occupational health services in micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as smaller companies are experiencing an unequal distribution of resources. To optimise the implementation in MSMEs, the aim of this scoping review is to present an overview of the MSMEs' needs regarding occupational health services. METHODS: The literature search was

Comparative analysis of alcohol consumption patterns and binge drinking behaviours among working populations: implications for occupational health and workplace safety.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and binge drinking (BD) are major public health concerns with clear implications for occupational health and workplace safety, particularly in physically demanding or safety-sensitive jobs. However, differences in alcohol-related risk across occupational groups remain insufficiently explored. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed medical records from 1264 workers who underwent routine occupational health surveillance in Palermo, Italy, between 2023 and 2025. Participants were classified as white-collar workers (Work 1; n = 607) or blue-collar

Occupational sedentary behaviour and mental health symptoms among software and IT workers in China: a cross-sectional study using path analysis.

Evidence regarding the association between occupational sedentary behaviour and common mental health symptoms remains limited. As the workplace contributes substantially to daily sedentary time, understanding its association with employees’ mental health is important. This study aimed to: (1) estimate self-reported sedentary behaviour among software and information technology (IT) workers in China; (2) examine the association between occupational sedentary behaviour and common mental health symptoms; and (3) identify factors that may influence this relationship.A cross-sectional online survey

Occupational Risk of Low-Level Blast Exposure and Health Outcomes: A Longitudinal Study of Postdeployment Army Enlisted Active Duty Soldiers.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the relationship between risk of occupational low-level blast (LLB) exposure and health outcomes (ie, substance use disorder, long-term opioid receipt, headaches, and back pain). We integrated 2 established military occupation-based LLB exposure risk classification strategies (Belding and colleagues and Carr and colleagues) to use military service occupation as a proxy for LLB exposure risk. SETTING: Records were drawn from the Substance Use and Psychological Injury Combat Study and included Military Health System inpatient and outpatient care data, pharmacy fill records,
