Scoping Review of the Published Guidelines for the Management of Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries.

A traumatic brachial plexus injury (TBPI) is a rare yet debilitating condition with a typical incidence of 0.6-3.9 per 100000 annually, predominantly affecting young, economically active males following motorcycle accidents. Delayed diagnosis and treatment are associated with poorer functional outcomes, significant individual disability, and societal burdens, including loss of vocational potential and increased care costs. Individuals in resource-limited settings are particularly vulnerable to receiving suboptimal care. This study aimed to identify and evaluate existing published guidelines fo

Improving hospital care for people who use drugs: deliberative process development of a clinical guideline for opioid withdrawal management.

BACKGROUND: Management of opioid withdrawal in hospital settings is crucial to improve treatment completion and health outcomes among patients who use opioids, such as heroin. Evidence-based clinical guidelines can support responsive provision of opioid substitution therapy (OST). In England there is no standardised application of guidance for substance dependence management across National Health Service (NHS) Hospitals. A recent review of NHS hospital policies identified varying approaches to managing opioid withdrawal and procedural barriers to timely medication. OBJECTIVE: To develop a cl

Personalized fitness recommendations using machine learning for optimized national health strategy.

Rising concerns over public health and chronic disease prevalence have intensified the demand for data-driven, personalized fitness interventions. While national health programs offer general guidelines, they often lack the granularity required to address individual variability in health status, lifestyle, and demographic context. This paper presents a machine learning framework to generate personalized fitness recommendations aligned with national health goals. Leveraging population-scale data, the aim is to optimize physical activity planning while maintaining fairness and clinical relevance

Delivering Palliative Care in Mental Health Nursing Settings: A Systematic Review.

RATIONALE: Palliative care can provide comfort, alleviate suffering, and improve quality of life; however, access to palliative care for people with mental illnesses at the end of their lives is extremely poor. As the need for palliative care is expected to rise significantly in the future, palliative care must be considered a global health priority. AIM: To examine the provision of palliative care within mental health settings and explore the factors that influence the experience of patients receiving palliative care in these settings. METHOD: This systematic review draws on peer-reviewed q

Understanding advanced practice registered nurse perspectives on providing care to people with a history of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: People with a history of breast cancer (PHBC) face a lifelong risk of treatment-related sequelae affecting their quality of life. Stakeholders advocate for improving breast cancer survivorship outcomes by increasing clinicians' knowledge of cancer survivorship issues. In Missouri, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in nononcology settings provide routine survivorship care to PHBC; however, little is known about how they approach survivorship care planning for PHBC. PURPOSE: Examine perspectives of Missouri APRNs practicing in nononcology settings about providing survivors

Cardiovascular disease prevention in rural Nigeria in the context of a community based health insurance scheme: QUality Improvement Cardiovascular care Kwara-I (QUICK-I).

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading contributor to the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. Guidelines for CVD prevention care in low resource settings have been developed but little information is available on strategies to implement this care. A community health insurance program might be used to improve patients' access to care. The operational research project "QUality Improvement Cardiovascular care Kwara - I (QUICK-I)" aims to assess the feasibility of CVD prevention care in rural Nigeria, according to international guidelines, in the context of a co

COVID-19 Restrictions In Jails And Prisons: Perspectives From Carceral Leaders.

COVID-19 has been an unprecedented challenge in carceral facilities. As COVID-19 outbreaks spread in the US in early 2020, many jails, prisons, juvenile detention centers, and other carceral facilities undertook infection control measures such as increased quarantine and reduced outside visitation. However, the implementation of these decisions varied widely across facilities and jurisdictions. We explored how carceral decision makers grappled with ethically fraught public health challenges during the pandemic. We conducted semistructured interviews during May-October 2021 with thirty-two medi

Using community triage centres or non-traditional care facilities during a flu pandemic or other infectious disease outbreak.

One assumption of pandemic planning is that, during an influenza outbreak, acute care facilities may be quickly overrun with patients and as such must prepare in advance. In order to operationalise one component of a pandemic plan, Capital Health in Edmonton, Alberta, piloted a mobile triage centre facility (portable isolation containment systems) and tested pandemic influenza triage and assessment guidelines in the winter of 2006-07. The mobile model provided emergency department surge capacity for communicable disease emergencies with scalable deployment capabilities. The deployable module h

Development of the evidence-based guidelines for home birth in Switzerland: Results from a Delphi process.

In Switzerland, the right to a home birth is enshrined in law, and the associated costs are reimbursed by the national health insurance system. However, the conditions under which such births should occur remain unregulated at the national level, with no shared criteria for determining eligibility across the country. The aim of this project is to develop national guidelines to define criteria under which pregnant women would be ineligible for a planned home birth. A four-phase process was conducted, combining scientific evidence and expert consensus. It began with a systematic review of intern

Black men are dying from prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States, accounting for 33% of all cancer cases among men (American Cancer Society, 2004). In the United States the number of new cases of prostate cancer was estimated at 230,110 and 29,900 will die (American Cancer Society, 2004). It is anticipated that these numbers will continue to grow despite effective treatment regiments. Black men (African-American) are 2.5 times more likely to die of prostate cancer than White men (Peters, 2005). Recent studies suggest genetics, diet, knowledge, and socioeconomic status as contributo

Towards elimination of parent-to-child transmission of syphilis in India: a rapid situation review to inform national strategy.

In February 2015, India's National AIDS Control Organisation, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, launched a national strategy towards elimination of parent-to-child transmission (E-PTCT) of syphilis, with a goal to reduce the incidence of congenital syphilis to 0.3 cases per 1000 live births by 2017. As part of the development of the national strategy, a rapid situation analysis was undertaken to ascertain the current practices, challenges and barriers for E-PTCT of syphilis in India. The analysis was conducted during February and March 2014 in five states selected from five different regi

Home care for life-supported persons: an approach to program development.

Eighteen ventilator-dependent children were returned to their homes from Illinois. Each candidate was selected according to physician-designated guidelines for medical stability as well as predetermined social-environmental and reimbursement criteria. Each individualized occurrence was organized according to a comprehensive home care plan. Unanticipated improvement in medical condition and psychosocial development has resulted at home. The children and families have returned to a safe environment that best promotes the health of all involved. In addition, initial cost savings were at least 70%

District decision-making for health in low-income settings: a systematic literature review.

Health management information systems (HMIS) produce large amounts of data about health service provision and population health, and provide opportunities for data-based decision-making in decentralized health systems. Yet the data are little-used locally. A well-defined approach to district-level decision-making using health data would help better meet the needs of the local population. In this second of four papers on district decision-making for health in low-income settings, our aim was to explore ways in which district administrators and health managers in low- and lower-middle-income cou
