Patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defects (ASDs) are two types of interatrial communications with unique clinical presentations and management strategies. BACKGROUND: It has been shown that the increase in volume and pressure in the right heart chambers increases liver stiffness. The Albumin-Bilirubin (ALBI) score is a useful and easy-to-use score for objectively assessing liver function. Surgical treatment of atrial septal defect in patients over 40 years-old is a subject of controversy. We compared long-term outcome in patients over 40 treated conservatively, with that of a similar group of patients after surgical closure. We concluded that surgical closure was superior to medical treatment. Our results indicate that surgery should be performed as soon as possible, even if the functional symptoms seem to be minimal.

Pericardium is an eminently suitable material for the closure of atrial septal defects. However, when it is not treated with glutaraldehyde, it is difficult to handle because of curling in of the edges. A technique is described by which pericardium can be used to close atrial septal defects with minimal handling and assistance, and without chemical pretreatment.

In order to evaluate the incidence of cardiac anomalies, type of cardiac defects, and their impact in the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS), a questionnaire study was done. Forty-five of 138 patients in the study (32.6%) had a known cardiac abnormality; 27 patients had single defects including atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), coarctation of the aorta, pulmonic stenosis, or bicuspid aortic valve. We report an infant with intractable congestive heart failure caused by coarctation of the aorta, patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, and multiple muscular ventricular septal defects. He had received balloon angioplasty for dilating the aortic coarctation and a Gianturco coil for closing the ductus at a single therapeutic catheterization session at 4 months old.
