PURPOSE: Mitral valve replacement (MVR) alters the physiological hemodynamic environment in the left ventricle, potentially leading to complications. This in vitro study aims to investigate the impact of different mitral valves (native, bioprosthetic, and mechanical valves) on the flow and blood transport in the left ventricle.
METHODS: A custom-made left heart simulator was used, considering three different mitral valves: native, bioprosthetic, and mechanical valves. Time-resolved tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) was employed to obtain three-dimensional ventricular flow. The

Over millions of years, the circulatory system evolved from primitive forms into a highly specialized network capable of overcoming time-distance constraints and enhancing diffusion efficiency. This structural advancement laid the physiological foundation for the regulation of hemodynamics and systemic homeostasis. Hemodynamic homeostasis is a fundamental biological process that ensures the continuous delivery of oxygen and substrates while facilitating the removal of carbon dioxide and metabolic waste. Such balance is essential for sustaining cellular metabolism and maintaining the function o…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the role of hemodynamic management in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury.
RECENT FINDINGS: Acute kidney injury (AKI) may be associated with persistent alterations in renal perfusion, even when cardiac output and blood pressure are preserved. The effects of interventions aiming at increasing renal perfusion are best evaluated by renal Doppler or contrast enhance ultrasound. However, limited data have been acquired with these techniques and the essential of the literature is based on surrogates of renal function such as incidence of use of renal repla

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to describe the evidence behind various blood and imaging-based biomarkers that can improve the identification of congestion when not clearly evident on routine examination.
RECENT FINDINGS: The natriuretic peptides (NPs) BNP and NT-proBNP have been shown to closely correlate with intra-cardiac filling pressures, both at baseline and when trended following improvement in congestion. Additionally, NPs rise well before clinical congestion is apparent so can be used as a tool to help identify subclinical HF decompensation. Additional serum-based b

As part of a cross-sectional study of aging of the human accommodative apparatus, unaccommodated anterior chamber depth, unaccommodated lens thickness, and accommodative amplitude were each determined by two or more independent techniques in 100 normal emmetropic subjects, age 18-70 yr. For anterior chamber depth, the order of accuracy seemed to be: optical pachymetry > slit-lamp Scheimpflug photography > Ascan ultrasonography, although there was good agreement among all three methods. For lens thickness, slitlamp Scheimpflug photography seemed more accurate than A-scan ultrasonography when th

BACKGROUND: Little information is available on the prognostic relevance of cardiac hemodynamic cutoffs in cardiac amyloidosis (CA) and its subtypes.
METHODS: Consecutive patients diagnose with light chain-CA or transthyretin CA undergoing right heart catheterization were analyzed. Prognostic relevance of classic hemodynamic cutoffs of cardiac index (CI <2.2 L/min per m2), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (>18 mm Hg), right atrial pressure (>8 mm Hg), and mean pulmonary artery pressure (≥25 mm Hg or pulmonary hypertension) with the combined end point of cardiac transplant/left ventricular as
