The observations from the present study indicate that vaginal formulations of the sulfated polysaccharide carrageenan are highly effective in protecting mice from herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection. Four HIV-positive patients with herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus coinfected oral ulcers are presented. All patients had persistent oral pain associated with nonhealing mucosal ulcers. A rapid latex agglutination (LA) test was compared with complement fixation and enzyme immunoassay for the determination of herpes simplex virus immune status in sera of patients. Of 173 samples, 88% gave concordant results in all three assays (115 positive and 37 negative). The LA and complement fixation tests agreed 92% of the time, and the LA agreed with the enzyme immunoassay 94% of the time. LA is a simple and rapid test which can be used for determining the herpes simplex virus immune status in sera of patients.

The autoinoculation test has been used as a diagnostic procedure in patients with chancroid-suspected genital ulcerations. In four of 13 patients with a positive autoinoculation test, herpes simplex virus type 2 was isolated from the primary lesions. Auto-inoculation from a genital ulcer suspected of being ulcus molle gave redness after 24 hours and after 48 hours vesicles and pustules appeared. Cultivation from the auto-inoculation after the 48 hours was positive for herpes simplex virus type 2. Our observation underlines two points: auto-inoculation for the diagnosing of Haemophilus ducreyi infection may be mimicked by herpes simplex infection, and the incubation period of herpes simplex can be shorter than the 4-5 days usually given.
