Serum hormones and seminal parameters in males with thyroid disturbance.

Semen characteristics and serum levels of the hormones T3, T4, fT4, TSH, FSH, LH, Prolactin and Testosterone have been measured in five men with thyroid disorders (two patients had primary hypothyroidism, two had Graves disease and one had subacute thyroiditis). Alteration in thyroid status negatively affects semen quality, more markedly in hypothyroidism than in hyperthyroidism. Treatment of patients improves the quality of semen.

Hormones of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis: a psychoneuroendocrine perspective.

Although relationships between hormones of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis and behavior have been suspected for more than two centuries, there existed no framework within which they could be understood. It now appears that disturbances in the HPT-axis have more to do with affective state than with any other aspect of mentation, save possibly cognition. First, depression is the most frequently observed psychiatric symptom in patients suffering from hypothyroidism. Second, approximately 30% of euthyroid patients with major depression show a blunted, i.e., attenuated TSH response af…

Ovarian steroid hormones. Effects on mood, behaviour and brain excitability.

Estradiol and progesterone both accumulate in the brain. Specific cytosol receptors are present in certain CNS regions. Estradiol increases but progesterone decreases the brain's excitability. The effects can be mediated via monoamine systems or a change in monoamine metabolizing enzymes, but other mechanisms are possible. The combination of estradiol and progesterone seem to provoke a negative mood change in certain sensitive women. Estradiol and progesterone singly seem not to have these negative effects on mood, but perhaps positive effects instead.

Ammonia: its effects on biological systems, metabolic hormones, and reproduction.

The physical, chemical properties of ammonia, its sources and detoxification, its effects in biological systems, its influence upon insulin action and glucose metabolism, and its possible effects on reproduction are discussed. Present chemical methods do not distinguish nonionic from ionic forms. At physiological pH, nonionic ammonia concentrations remain low but are primarily responsible for toxic effects. Thus, biologically significant changes of ammonia concentrations may not be revealed by determinations of ammonia in blood plasma. For these and other reasons the subacute toxicity of ammon

Evidence that thyroid hormones regulate gluconeogenesis from glycerol in man.

We have previously reported that glucose production assessed using radioisotopic methods is 50% increased in hyperthyroidism but 30% decreased in hypothyroidism. These studies, however, do not distinguish between glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. In fasting man more than 80% of circulating glycerol is cleared by the liver and enters the gluconeogenic pathway. We have therefore measured glycerol clearance following bolus intravenous glycerol administration as an indirect assessment of gluconeogenic capacity. Hyperthyroid and hypothyroid subjects were compared with separate matched controls af

Effect of steroid hormones on the metabolism of human spermatozoa.

Information relating to the effect of steroids on the metabolism and motility of human spermatozoa is limited despite the increasing interest in the use of these hormones for the purpose of contraception. In the present study it was shown that progesterone, testosterone, and 11-beta-OH-progesterone significantly inhibit the CO2 production of human spermatozoa. Estrone was ineffective. Progesterone and testosterone, but not estrone, also significantly depressed O2 uptake. In contrast to CO2 production and O2 uptake, lactic acid production was not significantly affected by any of the steroids st…

Beta-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs and thyroid hormones in hyperthyroid subjects.

Serum thyroid hormone concentrations were measured before and during 10 days' treatment with atenolol (200 mg/day), acebutolol (400 mg/day), oxprenolol (160 mg/day) and propranolol (160 mg/day) in 24 hyperthyroid patients. During propranolol treatment serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations fell significantly (P less than 0.05) but there was no change in thyroid hormone concentrations in the other groups although all patients reported a symptomatic improvement.

Clinical manifestation of adrenocorticotropin-determined plasma concentrations of mineralocorticoid hormones.

Chronic oversecretion of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) in Cushing's disease and partial adrenal insufficiency results in a plasma pattern of mineralocorticoid hormones (MCHs) in which deoxycorticosterone, 18-hydroxycorticosterone and aldosterone remain within normal limits. In patients with deficiencies of 17 alpha- and 21-hydroxylation, the entire MCH pathway may be initially stimulated by ACTH alone in the presence of reduced cortisol production. An ACTH-induced intra-adrenal factor reflected by levels of cortisol production, or cortisol itself, may determine MCH levels by its inhibition (high)…

Effects of hormones on osteocyte function and perilacunar wall structure.

Microradiographical and ultrastructural aspects of periosteocytic lacunae are determined by osteocytic activity, lacunar modeling and perilacunar miniremodeling in particular. The miniremodeling activity is constituted by two alternating processes: osteolysis and osteoplasis. Modifications of lacunar shape and size and of perilacunar wall ultrastructure, caused by a direct or indirect effect of certain hormones on osteocytic activity, were observed. The lacunar modeling alterations, particularly in cases of VDH or PTH deficiency, result in an irreversible impaired calcification of the lacunar …

Congenital heart disease and prenatal exposure to exogenous sex hormones.

One-hundred and four infants with congenital heart disease were identified from their birth certificates and matched with normal controls. Their gestational histories were examined to see whether they had been exposed to exogenous sex hormones. Exposure was 8-5 times more common among the infants with malformations than among controls. A history of hormone exposure was more common among those patients with multiple malformations, and the exposed infants were also more likely to have died (and to have died earlier) than those who had not been exposed, which suggests that hormone exposure causes…

Inhibition of human lymphocyte stimulation by steroid hormones: cytokinetic mechanisms.

The steroid hormones estradiol, progesterone and testosterone, in addition to cortisol, inhibited stimulation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and Con A. This effect upon lymphocyte transformation was assayed by three methods: quantitation of [3H]thymidine incorporation into acid precipitable material, microscopic assessment of blastic transformation and determination of the labelling index. Addition of steroid hormones at the initiation of culture resulted in a marked inhibition in all three parameters, which was observed with lower concentrations of cortisol…
