BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is an infrequent cause of sudden death. Death often results from circulatory collapse, respiratory arrest, or both.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causes of death, anatomical findings, and comorbid diseases in cases of fatal anaphylaxis.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case review of 25 unselected cases of documented fatal anaphylaxis. Each case report contained details of the fatal reaction, a review of the medical record, and laboratory and autopsy findings. Serum tryptase concentrations were measured in 7 cases.
RESULTS: The anaphylactic deaths included 7 reaction

BACKGROUND: specific immunotherapy for Hymenoptera Venom (VIT) is considered a life-saving treatment in insect sting allergy. A few studies with depot VIT have been published, but they are mainly focussed on patients sensitized to Apis.
METHODS: this retrospective study was designed to evaluate both efficacy and safety of depot VIT for Vespula. Thirty-six patients (age range 6-73 years) with a history of systemic reactions (grade III to IV according to Mueller) after a Vespula sting, and specific sera IgE RAST to Vespula at least class 2, were administered a depot preparation of venom reachin

Malassezia yeasts may be a trigger factor for atopic dermatitis. Following the recent reclassification of the genus, the presence of specific IgE antibodies was examined in the sera of patients with atopic dermatitis (n = 223), pityriasis versicolor (n = 83), seborrheic eczema (n = 50) and hymenoptera allergy (n = 39) and in controls without skin diseases (n = 50). In addition to using the commercially available radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for Pityrosporum orbiculare couplings were also made against the reference strains for M. furfur and M. sympodialis. To characterize the specificity and

The objective of this study was to elucidate the etiology and frequency of deaths in the United States from encounters with animals. The number of deaths from venomous and nonvenomous animals is reported annually to the US Department of Health and Human Services and published in Vital Statistics of the United States. This study is a survey of all animal-related fatalities listed as E-codes 905-906 reported in the Vital Statistics of the United States from 1979 through 1990. Data were extracted uniformly from the annual reports and analyzed using descriptive statistics. From 1979 through 1990,

The emerald jewel wasp, Ampulex compressa, exploits the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, as a host for its progeny. The wasp subdues the host by stinging directly into the brain and subesophageal ganglion, inducing long-term hypokinesia. The hypokinesic host lacks normal escape behavior and motivation to walk, making it easy for subjugation by the wasp. The mechanism underlying hypokinesia induction is not known, but depletion of monoamines induces behavior resembling venom-induced hypokinesia. To test whether amine depletion occurs in stung animals, we used high-performance liquid c

In vitro measurement of IgE antibodies in serum has an established role in the study of allergic disease, but the place of in vitro tests in routine diagnosis is not well established. They are particularly helpful in confirming new allergens in the workplace and in situations where skin testing is potentially dangerous or technically not feasible. The basic procedure is the radioallergosorbent test (RAST). Each modification has its peculiar advantages and disadvantages. A clinician depending upon in vitro tests for diagnosis must be aware of the technical problems, the inherent limitation in s

Koinobiont parasitoids utilize nutrients obtained from hosts that contine to feed and grow after parasitization. However, if the ecdysis of early host instars is prevented, parasitized larvae will fail to grow large enough to support the development of the parasitoid brood and both organisms will perish. When L5 instar larvae (the penultimate stage) of Pseudaletia separata were parasitized by Cotesia kariyai and injected with Euplectrus separatae venom (5PV), the development of these hosts was arrested before molting to the next stage and the caterpillars thus failed to gain weight. These host

BACKGROUND: Injective immunotherapy is traditionally performed with a build-up phase lasting 3 to 4 months. The costs, decreasing compliance from both patients and clinicians and inconveniences due to this schedule may be overcome using different schedules.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A revision of the published papers with clustered schedules has been made. Attention has been focussed on tolerance and its relationships with relevant parameters such as kind of extract (aqueous or depot), allergens and their pharmaceutical presentation, schedule followed, use or not of a premedication, clinical manif

Insect sociality is a major evolutionary transition based on the suppression of worker reproduction in favor of a queen's reproductive monopoly. Although sophisticated insect societies have arisen independently on multiple occasions in the Hymenoptera (bees, ants, and wasps), how worker sterility evolved through natural selection is not fully understood. In honey bees (Apis mellifera), dietary cues (royal or worker jelly) and social chemical signals (e.g., queen pheromones) promote caste differentiation by modulating the levels of juvenile hormone (JH), the key physiological orchestrator of ca

Anaphylaxis is a severe systemic hypersensitivity reaction characterized by rapid onset, unpredictable clinical course, and potentially fatal outcomes. Although its diagnosis remains primarily clinical, the identification of biomarkers capable of improving risk stratification and understanding disease mechanisms remains an important unmet need. Among the mediators implicated in anaphylaxis, platelet-activating factor (PAF) has emerged as a key effector molecule involved in vascular permeability, bronchoconstriction, platelet activation, and cardiovascular dysfunction. The biological activity o

OBJECTIVE: In people, severe Hymenoptera stings can lead to systemic allergic reactions, acute kidney injury, rhabdomyolysis, hemolysis, shock, and even death. Hemolytic anemia as a result of multiple honeybee stings has been reported in dogs; however, there are no prior reports of hemolytic anemia due to wasp stings in the dog. In this report, we present a case of a dog that developed hemolytic anemia after a single wasp sting. We also report the vulnerability of RBCs to the wasp venom using an in vitro hemolysis assay.

Parthenogenetic wasps provide an ideal natural experiment to study the heritability, plasticity, and microevolutionary dynamics of body size. Dinocampus coccinellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae, Euphorinae) is a solitary, generalist braconid parasitoid wasp that reproduces through thelytokous parthenogenesis and parasitizes over 50 diverse species of coccinellid ladybeetles worldwide as hosts. Here, we designed an experiment with parthenogenetic lines of D. coccinellae presented with three different host ladybeetle species of varying sizes, across multiple generations to investigate heritability a

INTRODUCTION: The clinical significance of elevated baseline serum tryptase (BST) in the absence of mast cell disorders or allergic reactions has long been unclear. Recently, a genetic variation of the TPSAB1 gene, which among others encodes for alpha tryptase, has been reported and named hereditary alpha tryptasemia (HaT). HaT has been linked to various manifestations, including severe allergic reactions. However, clinical studies are limited. In this study, we aimed to determine HaT prevalence and characterize its clinical manifestations in patients at a specialized allergy center.

So far, methods that yield the high purity and activity of the isolated mitochondria from insects have not been reported and determined. Here, we develop methods that combine differential centrifugation and discontinuous Nycodenz density gradient centrifugation to isolate highly purified mitochondria from the thorax muscle of insects, and the methods were widely validated across three orders (Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Blattaria) covering four insect species using Western blot and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The results showed the removal of the residual contamination wi

Insecticides are commonly used to control populations of pests and disease vectors. However, they can have multiple unintended effects on non-target species. Assessing their impacts on the physiology and behavior of beneficial insects, such as biological control agents, is thus necessary to gain insight into the diversity and nature of such side effects. Here, we investigated the effect of sublethal doses of the endocrine disrupting insecticide pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone agonist, on females of the solitary ectoparasitoid Eupelmus vuilleti (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae). These parasitoid wasps

Parasitoids are known to exploit volatile cues emitted by plants after herbivore attack to locate their hosts. Feeding and oviposition of a polyphagous herbivore can induce the emission of odor blends that differ among distant plant species, and parasitoids have evolved an incredible ability to discriminate them and locate their hosts relying on olfactive cues. We evaluated the host searching behavior of the egg parasitoid Cosmocomoidea annulicornis (Ogloblin) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) in response to odors emitted by two taxonomically distant host plants, citrus and Johnson grass, after infesta

Arthropods, including insects and arachnids, significantly affect humans as vectors for infectious diseases. Arthropod bites and stings commonly cause minor, usually self-limited reactions; however, some species are associated with more severe complications. Spider bites are rarely life-threatening. There are two medically relevant spiders in the United States. Widow spider (Latrodectus) envenomation can cause muscle spasm and severe pain that should be treated with analgesics and benzodiazepines. Antivenom is not widely available in the United States but may be considered for severe, refracto

BACKGROUND: Hymenoptera stings are one of the most common causes of anaphylaxis. Vespa orientalis (red hornet) is a common and very aggressive hymenopteran endemic in central and southern areas of Iran. Allergy testing and venom immunotherapies are carried out with venom components which are expensive, have limited commercial availability, and often lack specificity. Although proteomic analysis of hymenopteran venom has been shown to be a powerful technique to identify allergens, data on the protein components of V. orientalis venom are lacking.
AIM: This study was designed to characterize th
