[Conditions for the laboratory survival of Haemagogus janthinomys dyar, 1921 (Diptera:Culicidae)].

A little modification was made on the classical Borel tube, used for rearing isolated females of mosquitoes. The first studies were realized with the main Yellow fever vector, Haemagogus janthinomys, in Brazil. The results are: a better survival, as far as 72 days, a greater number of eggs, up to 80, and a shorter trophogonic cycle of 7-8 days. So, one can imagine more easily further studies about the vertical transmission of the YF virus by this important neo-tropical mosquito.

[Mono- and mixed infection by the tick-borne encephalitis and Powassan viruses of tissue explants from ticks of the genus Hyalomma].

The paper presents results of virusological and electron microscope studies of the reproduction of viruses of tick-borne encephalitis and Povassan at mono- and mixed persistent infection of explants of imaginal tissues of Hyalomma anatolicum and H. dromedarii with these viruses. The virus reproduction in explants was observed within 208 to 217 days after the infection. Joint reproduction of two model viruses within 1-2 months after the infection can take place and after that the inhibition of the reproduction of one of the viruses. This inhibition can be of cyclic character.

Differential treatment of phobias: use of imipramine for panic attacks.

The core disorder in agoraphobia and mixed phobia typically is the "spontaneous" panic attack, which may be due to various psychologic and physiologic triggering mechanisms. The panics tend to lead to anticipatory anxiety and, consequently, avoidance behavior. Tricyclics and MAO inhibitors suppress the spontaneous panics. Once this is accomplished, psychotherapeutic intervention helps patients overcome their phobias. Supportive psychotherapy, imaginal desensitization and in vivo exposure appear to be equally effective. Phobics who do not experience spontaneous panics are unaffected by these dr

[Gerstmann's syndrome (critical review of the literature)].

Serious doubts have been casted upon the validity of the Gerstmann's syndrome since the paper of Benton in 1961. On the other hand, the results of several recent works suggest that it could not be a mere artifact. The analysis of this results, and mostly the theoretical works of Luria on the physiology of higher cortical functions, make it possible to imagine a functional unity behind the heterogenous signs of this syndrom, and the other manifestations of left parieto-occipital lesions. The data collected in the litterature are discussed, with special reference to the theoretical implications

Updating Psychotherapy Work with the Future: Futures Thinking and the Futurizing Functions of Containment.

The acceleration of climate change and other global and political crises has created a state of "permacrisis," confronting patients with sig … pmental processes that undergird psychic understandings of time, identity consolidation, and future imagination. Containment has a "futurizing" function embedded within it, which is the creation of hope. The appreciation of containment's central role in engaging potential futures clarifies the therapeutic stance in a time of "permacrisis."

Both mental imagery and object-based attention regulate differential fear conditioning in the anterior insula.

Distraction is a common emotion regulation strategy, disrupting emotion generation by prioritizing distracter stimulus processing at the expense of the emotion elicitor. Across two experiments (experiment 1: behavioral psychophysiology, N = 44; experiment 2: neuroimaging with psychophysiology, N = 28), we predicted that both object-based (external) and mental imagery-based (internal) distraction would down-regulate differential fear responding. Participants underwent differential fear conditioning, pairing one face image with shock (CS+) while another face image was never paired with shock (CS

Distinguishing Suicidal Obsessions from Suicidal Ideation: A First-Person Suicide Image Pilot Study.

Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience unwanted and intrusive thoughts that cause anxiety and/or distress. The content of these thoughts can vary widely. Suicidal obsessions (SOs) are unwanted, intrusive, and distressing thoughts about suicide, death, or self-harm. Their clinical presentation differs markedly from that of suicidal ideation (SI), yet most suicide risk assessments fail to distinguish between the two phenomena. The distinction is critical, as SOs and SI differ in their clinical risk and require different treatments. This pilot study compares the self-repo

Deaf futurity: designing and innovating hearing aids.

One of the tenets of a posthuman vision is the eradication of disability through technology. Within this site of 'no future', as Alison Kafer describes, the disabled body is merged with artificial intelligence technology or transformed into a prosthetic superhuman. These imaginative possibilities are materialised in a future-oriented mindset in contemporary technological innovation, including hearing aids and other devices-such as vibrating vests to 'feel sounds' or sign language gloves, what design critic Liz Jackson defines as 'disability dongles'-designed to bypass deafness that simultaneou

"It Makes It More Real to You": Abortion Attitudes Following Experience and Contact With Abortion.

INTRODUCTION: When positioned as part of a cluster of related social and political attitudes, abortion attitudes are characterized as somewhat fixed from a young age. The extent to which abortion attitudes are malleable, and can be shaped by experience, is under-researched in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals with (N = 12) and without (N = 16) abortion experience living in the United Kingdom, consisting of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Inductive thematic analysis was used to address the research ques

The effects of haptonomy and virtual reality, anxiety, prenatal attachment and acceptance of pregnancy in unplanned pregnancy.

AIM: Unplanned pregnancies are an important public health problem that negatively affects the health of women and babies. This study aimed to determine the effects of haptonomy and virtual reality on anxiety, prenatal attachment and acceptance of pregnancy in unplanned pregnancies. Haptonomy, a touch-based bonding technique, and virtual reality, an immersive fetal visualisation tool, were used as interventions. METHODS: The sample of this randomised controlled study consisted of 217 pregnant women (haptonomy: 73, virtual reality: 72 and control: 72) who applied to the Obstetrics and Gynaecolo

Kinaesthetic motor imagery in writer's cramp dystonia reveals writing specific abnormalities in the occipital lobe.

Studies on motor imagery (MI) in writer's cramp (WC) dystonia are limited but may offer insights into impaired motor planning without the influence of dystonic co-contraction. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare executed writing and drawing of circles with kinaesthetic motor imagery in 18 WC patients and 18 healthy controls. Kinematic analysis confirmed the abnormal signature of WC by demonstrating a decreased frequency and an increased number of inversions during writing in WC patients. fMRI showed decreased BOLD activation during MI, with similar regions a

Extensive functional connectivity between brain areas implicated in mental imagery production and phobic fear during both emotional and neutral mental imagery.

Mental imagery is used by most people in their day-to-day cognition, for example, in planning, daydreaming, or remembering. Importantly, mental imagery has a powerful influence on emotion and is critically involved in many mental disorders. Thus, understanding the link between mental imagery and emotion is of clinical interest. For example, exposure therapy can be successfully conducted using mental imagery of fear-provoking stimuli, i.e., imaginal exposure. In this vein, accumulating evidence shows that mental imagery of a fearful stimulus produces a similar physiological and neural response

Can they touch? A novel mental motor imagery task for the assessment of back pain.

INTRODUCTION: As motor imagery is informed by the anticipated sensory consequences of action, including pain, we reasoned that motor imagery could provide a useful indicator of chronic back pain. We tested the hypothesis that mental motor imagery regarding body movements can provide a reliable assessment of low back pain. METHODS: Eighty-five subjects with back pain and forty-five age-matched controls were shown two names of body parts and asked to indicate if they could imagine moving so that the named body parts touched. Three types of imagined movements were interrogated: movements of arms

Can motor imagery balance the acute fatigue induced by neuromuscular electrical stimulation?

PURPOSE: The combination of motor imagery (MI) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can increase the corticospinal excitability suggesting that such association could be efficient in motor performance improvement. However, differential effect has been reported at spinal level after MI and NMES alone. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect on motor performance and spinal excitability following MI, NMES and combining MI and NMES. METHODS: Ten participants were enrolled in three experimental sessions of MI, NMES and MI + NMES targeting plantar flexor muscles. Ea

The neural correlates of gait improvement by rhythmic sound stimulation in adults with Parkinson's disease - A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience gait disturbances that can sometimes be improved with rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS); however, the underlying physiological mechanism for this improvement is not well understood. We investigated brain activation patterns in adults with PD and healthy controls (HC) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while participants imagined gait with or without RAS. METHODS: Twenty-seven adults with PD who could walk independently and walked more smoothly with rhythmic auditory cueing than without it, and 25 age-matched HC pa

Management of obsessive-compulsive disorder with virtual reality-based exposure.

Little information is available about use of virtual reality exposure for management of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). We present a patient with OCD, who presented with significant dysfunction related to his OC symptoms and was managed with virtual reality based exposure therapy. A 27-year-old male, presented with a history suggestive of OCD for last 8 years. His symptoms were characterized by obsessive images of known people, leading to significant anxiety and distress. To get rid of his anxiety and distress, he would repeat the acts at hand, multiple times till these images would subsi

Successful Graded Mirror Therapy in a Patient with Chronic Deafferentation Pain in Whom Traditional Mirror Therapy was Ineffective: A Case Report.

A 43-year-old man had deafferentation pain in his right upper extremity secondary to brachial plexus avulsion from a traffic accident 23 years previously. On our initial examination, he had severe tingling pain with numbness in the right fingers rated 10 on the numerical rating scale. The body perception of the affected third and fourth fingers was distorted in the flexed position. Although he performed traditional mirror therapy (TMT) for 4 weeks in the same methods as seen in previous studies, he could not obtain willed motor imagery and pain-alleviation effect. Therefore, we modified the ta
