We describe a patient with chyluria due to abdominal Bancroftian filariasis. The patient showed two unusual complications, an immune complex glomerulonephritis and a chronic urinary infection. We also discuss the use of the CT whole body scanner in the diagnosis and delineation of the extent of the disease.

A mouse model for the "sudden death" and "malarial lung" syndromes is described. Mice of the C3H/z strain succumb suddenly approximately 7 days after an infection with Plasmodium berghei becomes patent, at a time when parasitemia is still moderate (6 to 8%). Death could be shown to be due to anaphylactoid shock, probably induced by soluble immune complexes. Increased vascular permeability caused transudation and leakage of serum proteins into the interstitium and the alveoli. The lungs were found to be edematous, with a fine granular precipitate in the alveoli and adherent to the vascular wall

The complex and widespread family of integrin receptors is involved in numerous physiological processes, such as tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, development of the immune response and homeostasis. In addition, their key role has been elucidated in important pathological disorders such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases and in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, making them highly important targets for modern drug design campaigns. In this review we seek to present a concise overview of the small molecule antagonists of this diverse and

Autoimmune liver diseases, including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis, are rare chronic conditions characterized by immune-mediated hepatobiliary injury. While traditionally viewed as distinct entities, they exist along a continuous spectrum, manifesting in some cases as "overlap" or "variant" syndromes. These variants are considered phenotypic variations of shared pathways rather than unique diseases. The rarity of these conditions and an incomplete understanding of their underlying pathophysiology have prevented standardized definitions, a

Major histocompatibility complex-associated peptides have been considered as potential immunotherapeutic targets for many years. MHC class I phosphopeptides result from dysregulated cell signaling pathways that are common across cancers and both viral and bacterial infections. These antigens are recognized by central memory T cells from healthy donors, indicating that they are considered antigenic by the immune system and that they are presented across different individuals and diseases. Based on these responses and the similar dysregulation, phosphorylated antigens are promising candidates fo

Renal diseases other than diabetic nephropathy were found in 10 of 122 diabetic patients who underwent renal biopsy between 1960 and 1982. These diseases included lupus glomerulonephritis, acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (type I), focal glomerulosclerosis, idiopathic membranous nephropathy, and nonspecific immune complex glomerulonephritides. Because some of these disorders can alter the management and prognosis of renal disease in diabetic patients, the appearance of urinary abnormalities or deterioration in renal function inconsistent wit

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with a growing body of evidence suggesting the involvement of immune responses. To better understand the interplay between lactylation-related genes and immune reactions in PD, we conducted an integrated bioinformatics analysis. Utilizing publicly available PD gene expression datasets, we performed a detailed analysis employing Single-sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis. Diagnostic models were constructed using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and LASSO+SVM to evaluate the performance

BACKGROUND: Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs), derived from primordial germ cells, are rare malignancies with high curative potential. However, the emergence of new evidence indicating that 15% of patients experience tumor progression, leading to death, underscores the need for innovative therapeutics.
OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to explore the immune status in maintaining testicular health and the immune-related aspects of malignancy. Furthermore, it presents an overview of current data on the use of immunotherapy for TGCT patients.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Recent advances in immunology

Primary immune regulatory disorders (PIRD) comprise a heterogeneous group of monogenic disorders that impact homeostatic control of inflammation and immune tolerance. Patients with a PIRD typically present to medical care with symptoms of autoimmunity or hyperinflammation as the dominant clinical feature, symptoms that include fever, rash, lymphadenopathy, organomegaly, arthritis, and colitis are commonplace. Notably, PIRDs are a distinct entity from primary immune deficiency disorders (PIDD), which are primarily defined by a qualitative or quantitative defect in immunity, which manifests as a

The development and progression of immune-mediated rheumatic disease (IMRD) involves dysfunction of innate and adaptive immune cell populations leading to altered responses including inflammasome activation, dysregulated cytokine networks, increased immune cell numbers and multifaceted cell-cell communication. Several rheumatic diseases are further characterized by the presence of autoantibodies, immune complex mediated complement activation and the deficit of peripheral immune tolerance due to reduced regulatory T-lymphocyte cell function. Ultimately, in rheumatic disease the loss in cellular

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease whose pathophysiology is attributed to both innate and adaptive immune cells and molecules. Despite the crucial roles of the immune system in psoriasis, it cannot be categorized as an autoimmune disease because of the lack of main signs of autoimmunity, such as specific antibodies, well-defined antigens, and autoimmune genetic risk factors. The presence of some cellular and molecular properties, such as the presence of neutrophils in skin lesions and the activation of the innate immune system, attributes psoriasis to a group of diseases called autoinfl

Animal models play an indispensable role in the study of human diseases. However, animal models of different diseases do not fully mimic the complex internal environment of humans. Immunodeficient mice are deficient in certain genes and do not express these or show reduced expression in some of their cells, facilitating the establishment of humanized mice and simulation of the human environment in vivo. Here, we summarize the developments in immunodeficient mice, from the initial nude mice lacking T lymphocytes to NOD/SCID rgnull mice lacking T, B, and NK cell populations. We describe existing

Immune-complex-mediated hypersensitivity has been implicated in a small number of allergic respiratory conditions. These include EAA and ABPA. In addition, there is some evidence of type IV hypersensitivity in EAA and BFL, together with activation of complement via the alternative pathway (4, 8, 26). Positive immediate skin tests are now usually regarded as an essential criterion for the diagnosis of ABPA. These reflect the presence of antigen-specific IgE, but this test is not specific for ABPA, as other atopic subjects may also be sensitized to A. fumigatus without any evidence of the parenc

Electron microscopic analysis was performed on the development of irreversible glomerular distortion in experimental serum sickness nephritis in the rabbit. In the animals showing transient albuminuria, glomerular hypercellularity was due to the accumulation of monocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes and was seen to recover to nearly normal glomerulus. In this condition the glomerular structure was observed to be well preserved throughout the inflammation. In contrast, in the animals showing persistent proteinnuria, a disorganizing process was found in their glomeruli. Mesangial disintegrat
