New tuberculosis vaccines in India: modelling the potential health and economic impacts of adolescent/adult vaccination with M72/AS01E and BCG-revaccination.

BACKGROUND: India had an estimated 2.9 million tuberculosis cases and 506 thousand deaths in 2021. Novel vaccines effective in adolescents and adults could reduce this burden. M72/AS01E and BCG-revaccination have recently completed phase IIb trials and estimates of their population-level impact are needed. We estimated the potential health and economic impact of M72/AS01E and BCG-revaccination in India and investigated the impact of variation in vaccine characteristics and delivery strategies. METHODS: We developed an age-stratified compartmental tuberculosis transmission model for India cali

Efficacy and Safety of BCG Revaccination With M. bovis BCG Moscow to Prevent COVID-19 Infection in Health Care Workers: A Randomized Phase II Clinical Trial.

The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, which is widely used to protect children against tuberculosis, can also improve immune response against viral infections. This unicentric, randomized-controlled clinical trial assessed the efficacy and safety of revaccination with BCG Moscow in reducing the positivity and symptoms of COVID-19 in health care workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. HCWs who had negative COVID-19 IgM and IgG and who dedicated at least eight hours per week in facilities that attended to individuals suspected of having COVID-19 were included in the study and were fol

New-onset cutaneous lupus erythematosus after the COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccine development for COVID-19 has progressed expeditiously. To date, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the Moderna/mRNA-1273, Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2), and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen (JNJ-78436735) vaccines for use in the United States. Immediate side effects have included myalgia fatigue, chills, fever, and headache. We report an elderly patient with a history of lung cancer and no prior history of autoimmune disease who developed cutaneous lupus erythematosus two ½ months after the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Acute urticaria alone after CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccination should not be a contraindication for revaccination.

Patients who develop an immediate allergic reaction within the first 4 h of COVID-19 vaccine injection are recommended not to receive the same vaccine again. This recommendation mainly focuses on the mRNA and adenoviral vector COVID-19 vaccines, but data for whole virus vaccines are unknown. We report seven patients who developed an immediate reaction within 4 h (six had generalized urticaria, one had localized urticaria) after the first vaccination with CoronaVac, the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. The results of skin tests and basophil activation tests suggested that spike peptides play a r

Smallpox Vaccination of Laboratory Workers at US Variola Testing Sites.

To evaluate the need to revaccinate laboratory workers against smallpox, we assessed regular revaccination at the US Laboratory Response Network's variola testing sites by examining barriers to revaccination and the potential for persistence of immunity. Our data do not provide evidence to suggest prolonging the recommended interval for revaccination.

Intussusception risk after rotavirus vaccination in U.S. infants.

BACKGROUND: International postlicensure studies have identified an increased risk of intussusception after vaccination with the second-generation rotavirus vaccines RotaTeq (RV5, a pentavalent vaccine) and Rotarix (RV1, a monovalent vaccine). We studied this association among infants in the United States. METHODS: The study included data from infants 5.0 to 36.9 weeks of age who were enrolled in three U.S. health plans that participate in the Mini-Sentinel program sponsored by the Food and Drug Administration. Potential cases of intussusception and vaccine exposures from 2004 through mid-2011

Immunogenicity and safety of a booster dose of the 10-valent pneumococcal Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine coadministered with the tetravalent meningococcal serogroups A, C, W-135 and Y tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine in toddlers: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: This open, randomized clinical trial (NCT00758264) evaluated the coadministration of a booster dose of the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV) and a single dose of the tetravalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-TT) in Taiwanese and Mexican toddlers. METHODS: Healthy toddlers aged 12-23 months (N = 363) were randomized (2:1:1) to receive either both vaccines at first visit, MenACWY-TT at first visit and 1 month later PHiD-CV, or PHiD-CV at first visit and 1 month later MenACWY-TT. Immune responses were measured 1 month after MenACWY-TT vaccination by mening

[Fingolimod treatment for multiple sclerosis patients. Infectiological aspects and recommendations for vaccinations].

Since April 2011 fingolimod (FTY 720, Gilenya®), a new oral treatment, is available for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in Germany. Adverse effects in pre-marketing clinical controlled multicenter studies have led to specific precautions that have to be followed before initiating treatment. According to the European Union prescribing information fingolimod is not to be used as a first-line treatment, but is licensed as a second-line option or escalating therapy of MS. During treatment physical and neurological examinations as well as regular blood counts should be performed. The im

New-onset rheumatoid arthritis after anthrax vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax vaccine was licensed in 1970 and is used to protect individuals exposed to biological warfare and those who may come in contact with Bacillus anthracis in infected animals or in laboratory settings. The current adsorbed anthrax vaccine is regarded as effective and safe. Adverse effects reported include fever, chills, myalgia, arthralgia, and nausea. Four cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) temporally related to anthrax vaccine have been reported. As the number of administered doses increases, a better understanding of its adverse events profile will be forthcoming. OBJECTIV

BCG revaccination and tuberculin reactivity.

Interpretation of tuberculin reactions in revaccinated children is somewhat controversial among paediatricians. In this study, the effect of the number of BCG vaccines on tuberculin reactivity is evaluated. In 2810 healthy children aged 7 to 14 years with purified protein derivative (PPD) testing. Children were grouped according to the concordance of the number of the reported/documented vaccinations to the number of scars. Group 1 and 2 comprised of children 7 to 10 years of age and 11 to 14 years of age respectively, who had non-concordant scar numbers, and Group 3 and 4 included 7 to 10 and

[Mumps: efficacy of booster immunization].

10 children aged 15 years, who presented with anti-mumps antibodies of < 3 PEI (Paul Ehrlich Institute) despite documented mumps vaccination in the past, were boosted with Triviraten Berna (Rubini mumps strain) and the antibody response was assessed after 7, 28 and 90 days. All 5 children boosted with the same vaccine (Rubini mumps strain) had a titer rise as early as day 7 persisting for 3 months. The 4 children primed with the Jeryl Lynn mumps strain showed a primary immune response, i.e. a rise of the antibody titer after 28 days only, which did not persist well. The child originally primed

[Evaluation of second National Immunization Day activities, in China].

The second National Immunization Day (December 1994/January 1995) for 0-47 months old children, seemed to be well conducted, for not only the coverage of OPV being increased, but also the continued accumulation of zero-dose children being under controlled. In most of the provinces, it appears that the coverage of the second NID was significantly greater than the first NID. Based on comparison of the number of children immunized by birth cohort, there were 7.9% (1st round) and 4.3% (2nd round) more 1-3 year old children immunized in the 2nd NID than the 1st NID. Most of children missed in the 1

Strategies for immunization against hepatitis B in western Europe.

In western Europe there has been a striking decline in the incidence of hepatitis B virus infection during the second half of the 1980s. Only a minor part of this decrease is the effect of vaccination, since rather limited vaccination programmes have been introduced in most west European countries. The policies for recommendation of hepatitis B vaccination have differed from north to south in Europe due to different risks of exposure to hepatitis B virus. In Scandinavia, vaccination has mainly been recommended for health-care workers with frequent blood contact, while in Germany and in France

[Further observations on the stimulation of the secondary immunological response in the Rh system].

The present paper is a continuation of studies for establishing the optimal schedule of blood-donor immunization for obtaining of plasma suitable for production of anti-RhD immunoglobulin. After 3 years of observation of 12 immunized subjects it was found that stimulation of the secondary immune response should be done with small doses (0.5-1 ml) of blood injected intravenously at long time intervals, that is 1-3 times in a year. This method leads to a high and long-term rise in the titre of antibodies exceeding in all cases the value of 1/128 in indirect antiglobulin test, that is suitable fo

[Determination of the take efficiency of lyophilized smallpox vaccine as a function of the vaccination technic (double scarification, multi-puncture and jet injection)].

Revaccination against smallpox was performed by three techniques: double scarification, multiple puncture and jet injection in 352 youths aged 16 and 17 years. The results were assessed by the number of takes, the quality of the cutaneous and humoral response. The highest proportion of major skin reactions was obtained by multiple puncture vaccination (62.4%) and the best humoral response, tested by passive haemagglutination, by jet revaccination. Multiple puncture is recommended as a method of election both in restricted and mass vaccination in view of the high proportion of major skin rectio
