Incipient alcohol use in childhood: Early alcohol sipping and its relations with psychopathology and personality.

Prior research has shown that sipping of alcohol begins to emerge during childhood and is potentially etiologically significant for later substance use problems. Using a large, community sample of 9- and 10-year-olds (N = 11,872; 53% female), we examined individual differences in precocious alcohol use in the form of alcohol sipping. We focused explicitly on features that are robust and well-demonstrated correlates of, and antecedents to, alcohol excess and related problems later in the lifespan, including youth- and parent-reported externalizing traits (i.e., impulsivity, behavioral inhibitio

Social isolation, impulsivity and depression as predictors of aggression in a psychiatric inpatient population.

Aggressive behavior among psychiatric inpatients remains an issue of concern for staff, families and patients themselves. At the present time, studies examining prediction of aggression among psychiatric inpatients have focused mainly on diagnostic or demographic risk factors. Unfortunately little is known about specific social functioning and personality risk factors that may help identify specific individuals at risk for aggressive behavior. Given that many individuals who have engaged in violent criminal behavior have been observed to experience a combination of social isolation, depression

The relationship of risk-related behaviors and substance use among U.S. Army National Guard/Army Reserve soldiers and deployment differences.

U.S. Army National Guard and Army Reserve (ANG/USAR) soldiers are at risk for substance use, and research in other populations suggests risk-related behaviors and traits affect the propensity for use. Less is known about how deployment might amplify these effects. Our research explored the relations between risk-related behaviors and substance use among ANG/USAR soldiers and investigated differences by deployment (previously vs. never deployed). We drew a subset of data from Operation: SAFETY, an ongoing study of ANG/USAR soldiers and their partners (married/living together as if married). Cro

Guanfacine treatment improves ADHD phenotypes of impulsivity and hyperactivity in a neurofibromatosis type 1 mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder with a mutation in one copy of the neurofibromin gene (NF1+/-). Even though approximately 40-60% of children with NF1 meet the criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), very few preclinical studies, if any, have investigated alterations in impulsivity and risk-taking behavior. Mice with deletion of a single NF1 gene (Nf1+/-) recapitulate many of the phenotypes of NF1 patients. METHODS: We compared wild-type (WT) and Nf1+/- mouse strains to investigate differences in impulsivity and hyperactivity u

Demyelinating Neurobrucellosis Presenting With Neuropsychiatric Manifestations.

Neurobrucellosis with psychiatric manifestations is an uncommon manifestation of brucellosis. Herein, we report a 31-year-old male complaining of dizziness, nausea, malaise, imbalance, amnesia, psychosis, delusion, and impulsive and disorganized behavior. He was not responsive to antipsychotic treatment, and his brain MRI showed demyelinating hyperintensity foci in the periventricular and paraventricular areas and the subcortical areas of the right temporal and frontal lobes. His serum and cerebrospinal fluid serology were in favor of brucellosis, and he dramatically responded to anti-Brucella

Child abuse syndrome - a forensic case of fatal impulsive act of violence.

Child abuse syndrome is a medico-social problem widely spread around the world, which includes a complex of clinically manifested forms of violence against children. This syndrome includes different forms of physical violence, sexual violence, neglect, and emotional violence against children. The main problem with this type of violence continues to be the large number of unregistered "hidden" cases. The consequences of violence against children are serious and have a lasting negative effect on the physical and mental health of the victims. Child abuse is often a result of impulsive violent beh

Psychosocial impairment in DSM-5 intermittent explosive disorder.

The purpose of this study was to document the functional severity of DSM-5 IED in a clinical research sample. IED and control groups were compared on psychosocial functioning, life satisfaction, and on a variety of cognitive and behavioral issues. IED study participants reported significantly worse psychosocial function, quality of life, and higher job dysfunction than both psychiatric and healthy control study participants. The presence of DSM-5 IED is associated with significant psychosocial and functional impairment. Early intervention may aid in minimizing the consequences of impulsive agg

Recessive symptomatic focal epilepsy and mutant contactin-associated protein-like 2.

Contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) is encoded by CNTNAP2 and clusters voltage-gated potassium channels (K(v)1.1) at the nodes of Ranvier. We report a homozygous mutation of CNTNAP2 in Old Order Amish children with cortical dysplasia, focal epilepsy, relative macrocephaly, and diminished deep-tendon reflexes. Intractable focal seizures began in early childhood, after which language regression, hyperactivity, impulsive and aggressive behavior, and mental retardation developed in all children. Resective surgery did not prevent the recurrence of seizures. Temporal-lobe specimens showed e

Aggression and psychopathology in persons with severe or profound mental retardation.

We examined aggression and psychopathology in persons with severe or profound mental retardation. Most aggressive episodes were directed toward other clients, and ratings of aggression were positively correlated with self-injury, stereotypic behavior, and being ambulatory. In a linear regression analysis of psychopathological correlates, aggression was most consistently predicted by dependent personality and psychosis. To better describe the construct of aggression, we also developed an Aggression-psychopathology scale. Persons with mental retardation and aggression were more likely to be impu

Self-mutilative behaviors in male veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Self-mutilative behaviors (SMB) were examined in a sample of male veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The primary objective was to determine the prevalence of SMB and any physical, cognitive, or affective antecedents and correlates for these behaviors. Participants included 509 male veterans with PTSD and levels of PTSD, depression, alcohol use, hostility, and impulsivity were evaluated to determine if these variables were related to SMB. Antecedents and sequelae of SMB were also examined to generate hypotheses regarding the functions of these behaviors. A second type of habit

Finding a Needed Diagnostic Home for Children with Impulsive Aggression.

Aggressive behavior is one of the most common reasons for referrals of youth to mental health treatment. While there are multiple publications describing different types of aggression in children, it remains challenging for clinicians to diagnose and treat aggressive youth, especially those with impulsively aggressive behaviors. The reason for this dilemma is that currently several psychiatric diagnoses include only some of the common symptoms of aggression in their criteria. However, no single diagnosis or diagnostic specifier adequately captures youth with impulsive aggression (IA). Here we

A review of delay-discounting research with humans: relations to drug use and gambling.

Delay discounting represents the extent to which consequences, or outcomes, decrease in effectiveness to control behavior as a function of there being a delay to their occurrence. Higher rates of delay discounting are often operationalized as an index of impulsivity, and as such impulsive discounting may hold considerable potential for understanding fundamental behavioral processes associated with a range of problematic behaviors - including drug use and pathological gambling. This paper first provides a review of several assessment methods used in delay-discounting research with humans. Follo

Development of Dual Systems Constructs During Childhood: Sexual Abuse Variety as a Predictor of Differential Development.

The dual systems model has risen to prominence as a developmental framework because of its capacity for understanding adolescents' high propensity for risky behaviors during this period of the life-course. While development of impulse control and sensation-seeking mainly occurs during adolescence, childhood and exposures during childhood may lead to long-term impacts on development during this period of the life-course. Sexual abuse in childhood may be a particularly relevant predictor of differential development of these constructs. This study addressed these gaps in the literature by examini

The screening tool of behavioral self-regulation "Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders" task: a preliminary adaptation to Greek older adults.

The aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders (HTKS) behavioral self-regulation (executive function) measure in a sample of Greek older population. Specifically, 88 cognitively healthy Greek older adults over the age of 65 participated in the study. The Greek version of HTKS was administered along with the Greek versions of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Raven's Educational CPM, the Number Series (NS) test, the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and the Impulsive Behavior…

Postnatal Foxp2 regulates early psychiatric-like phenotypes and associated molecular alterations in the R6/1 transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a devastating disorder characterized by a triad of motor, psychiatric and cognitive manifestations. Psychiatric and emotional symptoms appear at early stages of the disease which are consistently described by patients and caregivers among the most disabling. Here, we show for the first time that Foxp2 is strongly associated with some psychiatric-like disturbances in the R6/1 mouse model of HD. First, 4-week-old (juvenile) R6/1 mice behavioral phenotype was characterized by an increased impulsive-like behavior and less aggressive-like behavior. In this line, we iden

Body mass correlates inversely with inhibitory control in response to food among adolescent girls: an fMRI study.

Self-report and behavioral data suggest that impulsivity may contribute to the development and maintenance of obesity. Neuroimaging studies implicate a widespread neural network in inhibitory control and suggest that impulsive individuals show hypoactivity in these regions during tasks requiring response inhibition. Yet, research has not directly tested whether body mass correlates inversely with activation of these regions during response inhibition tasks. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neural activations during a food-specific go/no-go task

Impulsivity and neuroticism share distinct functional connectivity signatures with alcohol-use risk in youth.

Increases in impulsivity and negative affect (e.g., neuroticism) are common during adolescence and are both associated with risk for alcohol-use initiation and other risk behaviors. Whole-brain functional connectivity approaches-when coupled with appropriate cross-validation-enable identification of complex neural networks subserving individual differences in dimensional traits (hereafter referred to as 'neural signatures'). Here, we analyzed functional connectivity data acquired at age 19 from individuals enrolled in a multisite European study of adolescent development (N ~ 1100) using connec

Early environmental enrichment and impoverishment differentially affect addiction-related behavioral traits, cocaine-taking, and dopamine D2/3 receptor signaling in a rat model of vulnerability to drug abuse.

RATIONALE: Risk factors for drug addiction include genetics, environment, and behavioral traits such as impulsivity and novelty preference (NP), which have been related to deficits in striatal dopamine (DA) D2/3-receptors (D2/3R) and heightened amphetamine (AMPH)-induced DA release. However, the influence of the early rearing environment on these behavioral and neurochemical variables is not clear. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the influence of early rearing environment on striatal D2/3R availabilities and AMPH-induced DA release in relation to impulsivity, NP, and propensity to drug self-admin

Pathological behaviors provoked by dopamine agonist therapy of Parkinson's disease.

The dopamine agonist medications, pramipexole and ropinirole, are commonly used to treat Parkinson's disease. These two drugs have a highly specific affinity for cerebral D3 receptors, known to be localized to the mesolimbic system. Herein is described a common side effect of these drugs, encountered in our routine clinical practice: pathological behaviors. This includes excessive gambling, hypersexuality, shopping, hyperphagia or obsessive hobbying, which may develop in up to 30% of people taking higher agonist doses. In contrast, treatment with the dopamine precursor, levodopa, in the absenc

A case with hyperkinetic frontal lobe epilepsy presenting as a psychiatric disturbance.

We report a case emphasizing the association of epilepsy with psychopathology. The patient was first referred for impulsive and inattentive behavior at the age of 4, and was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive disorder. At the age of 7, intermittent daytime episodes characterized with sudden fear and purposeless running, jumping, clapping, and rocking started. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings did not reveal any abnormality. Two years later, night-time episodes started, which were quite similar to the daytime spells. An overnight EEG showed bilateral frontal spike and wave disch
