We present the results of a study on myiasis in Panama during the first years of a Cochliomyia hominivorax eradication program (1998-2005), with the aim of investigating the behavior of the flies that produce myiasis in animals and human beings. The hosts that registered positive for myiasis were cattle (46.4%), dogs (15.3%), humans (14.7%), birds (12%), pigs (6%), horses (4%), and sheep (1%). Six fly species caused myiasis: Dermatobia hominis (58%), Phaenicia spp. (20%), Cochliomyia macellaria (19%), Chrysomya rufifacies (0.4%), and maggots of unidentified species belonging to the Sarcophagid

Arthropod-borne diseases are a real public health problem. One of these, Lyme disease, is a bacterial infection due to Borrelia spp., transmitted by a hard tick, Ixodes spp.. The infection is particularly prevalent in the Northern Hemisphere and primary prevention relies on the use of repellents for cloth impregnation (pyrethroids) or for skin application (DEET). Pyrethroids and DEET are the two most studied repellents. The concentration of the active principle is essential to get a real repellent efficiency. The most efficient are: DEET at 30-50%, picaridin or KBR3023 at 20%, citriodiol at 30

INTRODUCTION: Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) re-emerged in the Indian subcontinent in the mid-1970s after an almost complete absence in the previous fifteen or so years. The disease was first noted in Nepal in 1978 and, since 1980, it has been reported regularly in increasing numbers. Elimination of visceral leishmaniasis by 2015 has been identified as regional priority program in the level of high political commitment.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are the comprehensive assessment of information related to VL on the basis of past research studies conducted in Nepal, and an assessment

An index of epidemiological risk was developed for the foci of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) in the forest zone of Côte d'Ivoire, based on the following characteristics of Glossina palpalis palpalis populations: daily survival rate, apparent density of teneral males and females, and frequency of human-fly contact. The index agreed well with HAT prevalence. It varied according to ethnic groups and with seasonal changes in agricultural activities and fell rapidly to zero following the start of an anti-vector control campaign. Further studies in different biogeographical zones are desirable

The biology, veterinary importance and control of certain Nematocera are described and discussed. Culicoides spp. (family Ceratopogonidae) transmit the arboviruses of bluetongue (BT), African horse sickness (AHS), bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) and Akabane. Some other arboviruses have been isolated from these species, while fowl pox has been transmitted experimentally by Culicoides. These insects are vectors of the parasitic protozoans Leucocytozoon caulleryi and Haemoproteus nettionis, and the parasitic nematodes Onchocerca gutturosa, O. gibsoni and O. cervicalis. They also cause recurrent summ

The glossina control turns towards cheaper, ecological, easier techniques: trapping, which the efficacy might be increased by odour attractants; synthetic pyrethrinoids (impregnated targets; dipping or application of "Pour-on" formulations on skin of cattle). Only one new trypanocide was set up during the last 25 years: Melarsamine, arsenical derivative, effective in camels, cattle, horses infected by Trypanozoon (3.5 mg/kg b. w. by IM or SC routes). The trypanotolerant cattle is characterized by a better control of parasitemia and anaemia, dominant gene A of hemoglobin and gene F of albumin,

Chagas disease, also known as American Trypanosomiasis, is a parasitic infectious disease that is primarily transmitted by infected kissing bugs belonging to the subfamily Triatominae. Military personnel that conduct deployment operations (field training, patrols, combat, physical training and sustainment) in kissing-bug infested habitats are at risk. Transmission of disease to humans occurs by contact of skin and mucous membranes with infected kissing bug's feces. Additionally, transmission can result from blood transfusion, and ingestion of infected insects. However, the exact route of infec

The cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB, Psylliodes chrysocephala L) is a major pest of oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus L), especially in temperate regions where it is challenging the sustainable production of the crop. Conventional management has relied almost exclusively on synthetic insecticides, yet increasing regulatory restrictions, pest resistance and environmental concerns require the urgent development of alternative strategies. Semiochemicals, chemical cues that mediate inter- and intraspecific behavioural interactions, offer considerable potential for integration into push-pull pest ma

Western flower thrips (WFT) Frankliniella occidentalis cause extensive damage to crops either by direct feeding injury or by transmitting diseases. Current management strategies against this pest rely heavily on synthetic insecticides, leading to issues such as resistance development and environmental concerns. Several safer alternatives including RNA interference (RNAi), also referred to as post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS), are being extensively researched to develop species-specific molecular pesticides for the management of this pest. However, the success of RNAi depends on the se

Aphids are major agricultural pests due to their rapid reproduction, insecticide resistance, and role as vectors of plant pathogens. RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a promising strategy for species-specific pest control. However, RNAi in aphids remains inconsistent, limited by dsRNA instability, inefficient uptake, and variable gene silencing. Here, we investigate key biological barriers limiting RNAi efficiency by evaluating the delivery, stability, and efficacy of double-stranded (ds)RNA in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Feeding bioassays using food dyes and Cy3-labeled dsRNA demo

Many species of stored product insects have been spread by commerce, a few recently enough to have a written record. The bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller), and Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), have some of the most complete early records. The larger black flour beetle, Cynaeus angustus (LeConte) may have the most complete record of both geographic and host range expansion. The introduction of heated buildings and storage sites has allowed tropical species to establish in temperate climates. The adoption of c

Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), the Asian longhorned beetle, is a serious wood-boring pest of hardwood trees. There have been records that suggest Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) might be an "attract and kill" tree species for A. glabripennis, i.e., a tree that is attractive to A. glabripennis adults but kills their oviposited eggs. To evaluate the possibility of E. angustifolia as a control measure for A. glabripennis, we carried out a series of behavioral experiments in the laboratory and in the field. Results showed that: (i) A. glabripennis females preferred E. angustifoli

Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), the human head louse, is a parasitic insect responsible for pediculosis, a global health concern. In a previous study, we demonstrated that this hematophagous insect is attracted to a solvent extract from its faeces. In this study, we evaluated the head louse attraction towards mixtures of the three main components present in faeces (uric acid, hypoxanthine and guanine). A basic uric acid:hypoxanthine:guanine (10:10:1) mixture in 0.2 M produced significant attraction towards head lice in behavioural bioassays. In another approach,

Zeugodacus tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is an important agricultural pest currently managed primarily through the application of insecticides due to limited control strategies. Bait station devices are target specific and have emerged as a behaviorally based alternative to traditional insecticide sprays for managing Z. tau. In this study, we designed a bait station by integrating female-biased olfactory, visual, and gustatory elements, and a killing agent in a wax-matrix. Our results showed that the wax-matrix integrated with spinetoram showed the highest toxicity to immature and mature

The Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae Brenske (AGB), has become a significant pest of commercial mint fields in northern Indiana. Larval feeding on mint roots can cause stunted growth and plant death when densities are high. Sampling approaches that provide reliable estimates of larval densities in mint have not been established, leaving farmers without the knowledge necessary to implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated strategies for estimating AGB larval densities and plant performance in commercial mint systems. We used 2 samp

Spinosyn insecticides are widely used in conventional berry production, and spinosad is regarded as the most effective insecticide for managing Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), spotted-wing drosophila, in organic berry crops. Following the 2017 identification of spinosad resistance in caneberry fields in the Watsonville area, Santa Cruz Co., California, we conducted a study to examine the seasonal and annual susceptibility of D. suzukii over a three-year period. Adult flies were collected from two conventional and two organic caneberry fields in the Monterey Bay region,

BACKGROUND: Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an invasive, polyphagous vinegar fly pest that is primarily controlled by calendar-based broad-spectrum insecticide programs. Nonchemical management tactics are urgently needed to reestablish IPM within affected berry and cherry cropping systems. Composting is a post-harvest crop sanitation strategy that could potentially be used to manage D. suzukii infestation of fruit wastes.
RESULTS: This study found that D. suzukii emergence decreased exponentially with an increasing proportion of chicken manure, with emergence reduce
