The Status of Susceptibility of Japanese Encephalitis Vectors to Insecticides in Endemic Areas of Northern Districts of West Bengal, India.

Emergence and spread of resistance among vectors toward different insecticides is a serious problem for the Japanese encephalitis (JE) control program. Regularly monitoring the status of susceptibility of vector species to insecticides is important for formulating proper vector control measures. In this study, we studied the susceptibility status of major JE vectors from northern West Bengal, toward 4% DDT, 0.05% deltamethrin, and 5% malathion. Two- to three-day-old unfed female mosquitoes were subjected to a susceptibility bioassay using a World Health Organization kit. Corrected mortality (C

Unstable pyrethroid resistance in sheep body lice Bovicola ovis (Schrank), (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) and its implications for lice control on sheep.

A retrospective study in which the 18 years treatment history of a mob of sheep hosting a pyrethroid resistant strain of sheep body lice was compared with the coincidental changes in that strain's response to cypermethrin, provided a unique opportunity to investigate the stability of pyrethroid resistance in this species. Resistance levels remained very high (resistance factors (RF)=75-145) for at least five years following the cessation of pyrethroid treatments but within ten years had dropped to only 5, a level similar to many normal field strains and certainly not indicative of high-level r

Should the use of DDT be revived for malaria vector control?

Indoor residual spraying with DDT was the principle method by which malaria transmission was eradicated or greatly reduced in many countries between the late 1940s and 1970s. Since then, decreasing use of DDT has been associated with a resurgence of malaria in India, Sri Lanka, former Soviet Central Asia, Zanzibar, Venezuela and several other Latin American countries. In India and Zanzibar, DDT resistance in vectors, as well as a decline in spray coverage, are probable causes of reduced effectiveness of DDT in recent decades. In southern Europe, eradication of malaria transmission was achieved

The development of high synthetic pyrethroid resistance in Bovicola (Damalinia) ovis and the implications for resistance management.

A field strain of the sheep body louse, Bovicola (Damalinia) ovis, was tested in vitro against a range of synthetic pyrethroids (SP) and demonstrated a degree of resistance 80 to 900 times that of a susceptible strain. The dose response of this strain was compared with that of other strains showing low and intermediate resistance. These data, and those from other reported cases suggest that SP resistance in sheep lice develops sequentially through a low level stage with resistance factors of 20 or less. Further selection results in the development of strains with resistance factors of up to se

Long-term impact of exposure to Royal Guard, a pyriproxyfen-based bed net, on pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors from Cameroon using DNA-based metabolic resistance markers.

BACKGROUND: Escalating pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors highlights the urgency of implementing new control tools incorporating non-pyrethroid molecules. Here, using DNA-based metabolic resistance markers, we assessed the efficacy of the dual active ingredients net Royal Guard against pyrethroids-resistant malaria vectors in Cameroon, establishing its long-term impact on mosquitoes' life traits after exposure. RESULTS: Cone assays revealed low efficacy of Royal Guard against field Anopheles populations. However, analysis of the survival curves revealed that unexposed mosquitoes lived l

Use of topical nicotine for treatment of Pediculus humanus capitis (Anaplura: Pediculidae).

Head lice are caused by the host-specific, ectoparasitic insect Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer and remain a common human infestation. As a response to increasing resistance of head lice to present insecticidal agents, additional agents must be pursued. Inasmuch as nicotine has been used for controlling poultry lice, an in vitro study assessing its possible usage for human head lice was performed. Nicotine proved not to be an efficient insecticide, although it may facilitate removal of adult lice because it induces muscle twitches that may affect the insect's normal grip on hair follicles.

BACKGROUND: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) seeks to combine multiple management strategies for optimal pest control. One method that is su … of spinosyn identified the upregulation of several genes encoding proteins that may be involved in insecticide resistance including detoxification enzymes, such as cytochrome P450s, glutathione S-transferases and esterases. Sublethal T. ni egg treatments did not affect parasitoid emergence, however, there was a marked increase in the size of T. brassicae hind tibia and …

Allelic variation in a cluster of epsilon glutathione S-transferase genes contributes to DDT and pyrethroid resistance in the major African malaria vector Anopheles funestus.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance in malaria vectors is a serious challenge to malaria control and elimination. Elucidation of the role of detoxification genes in resistance is necessary to develop targeted strategies to reduce malaria burden. Glutathione S-transferase epsilon clusters (GSTe genes) are upregulated in DDT- and pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus mosquitoes across Africa. However, except for GSTe2, the molecular mechanisms behind this upregulation remain unclear. Here, we established that overexpression and allelic variation of GSTe genes contribute to insecticide resistanc…

Genomic Connectivity and Adaptive Gene Flow of Anopheles gambiae s. s. Across East and Central Africa.

Population connectivity influences the adaptive capacity of disease vectors by mediating the spread of insecticide resistance alleles. High gene flow poses challenges for tailored intervention strategies targeting localised populations, but connectivity is often poorly characterised for particular geographical regions. This study uses whole-genome data to investigate the population connectivity of the Anopheles gambiae malaria vector across East-Central Africa, including understudied populations from Ethiopia. We also investigated adaptive gene flow using Diplotype clustering at known insectic…

Identification and distribution of a GABA receptor mutation conferring dieldrin resistance in the malaria vector Anopheles funestus in Africa.

Growing problems of pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles funestus have intensified efforts to identify alternative insecticides. Many agrochemicals target the GABA receptors, but cross-resistance from dieldrin resistance may preclude their introduction. Dieldrin resistance was detected in An. funestus populations from West (Burkina Faso) and central (Cameroon) Africa, but populations from East (Uganda) and Southern Africa (Mozambique and Malawi) were fully susceptible to this insecticide. Partial sequencing of the dieldrin target site, the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor, identified two amin

Evaluation of the insecticidal activity of the spider-venom peptides Dc1a and Ta1a against economically important lepidopteran pests.

Lepidopterans are the most economically significant crop pests. They are mainly controlled with chemical insecticides that often suffer from insect resistance and adverse effects on the environment and human health. Insect-specific spider-venom peptides are considered safer, eco-friendly alternatives to chemical insecticides, and two insecticidal spider-venom derived peptides have already been commercialised by Vestaron Corporation, while more candidates are being progressed in global discovery pipelines. This study focusses on two insecticidal spider-venom peptides-Dc1a and Ta1a- and assesses

[Effect of temephos on acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain of Tilapia guineensis. 3: Comparative effect of temephos and 3 substitute insecticides].

The Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) is realized in the major part of the treated area by weekly applications of temephos in biotopes of simulles larvae. This insecticide is very effective and its impact on the aquatic fauna is evaluated by means of periodic samplings of the fauna. Therefore, the most sensitive way of tracking down fish poisoning is by studying the brain acetylcholinesterase depression. Evaluated on Tilapia guineensis this lowering is moderate when operational doses are used by OCP. The discovery of resistence to temephos incited researchers of OCP to try remplacement in

Survival and swimming behavior of insecticide-exposed larvae and pupae of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: The yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti is essentially a container-inhabiting species that is closely associated with urban areas. This species is a vector of human pathogens, including dengue and yellow fever viruses, and its control is of paramount importance for disease prevention. Insecticide use against mosquito juvenile stages (i.e. larvae and pupae) is growing in importance, particularly due to the ever-growing problems of resistance to adult-targeted insecticides and human safety concerns regarding such use in human dwellings. However, insecticide effects on insects in gene
