In men orchitis represents the most common complication of mumps infection and occurs in 5 to 37% of this population. Bilateral manifestation is observed in 16 to 65% of the patients. The most important danger is the risk of testicular atrophy which results in sterility. Infection by hepatitis B (HBV) and/or delta virus (HDV), is the most frequent acquired pathology in patients affected by end-stage hepatic disease, candidates for liver transplant. To reduce the risk of virus reactivation after surgery, we used alpha Interferon (IFN) therapy in patients who were HBV-DNA and/or HDV-RNA positives before transplant. Tubuloreticular inclusions (TRI) were induced in normal blood lymphocytes after incubation with Staphylococcus aureus Cowan 1 (STA), but they were not induced by pokeweed mitogen (PWM), as we reported previously. OBJECTIVES: To assess the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and lipid peroxides (the marker of free radicals activity) in peritoneal fluid (PF) of infertile women with minimal and mild endometriosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 19 women were studied, including 9 infertile women with minimal or mild endometriosis and 10 patients with tubal occlusion (the reference group). BACKGROUND: Interferon alpha is a widely used therapeutic agent in the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection. Clinical thyroid disease is seen in nearly 15 % of patients receiving interferon alpha for hepatitis C virus infection. The mechanism of thyroid dysfunction with interferon alpha is either autoimmune or inflammatory. We report a case of young woman who developed biphasic thyroid dysfunction posing a diagnostic challenge, while receiving interferon alpha treatment for hepatitis C virus infection.

Antiviral treatment of hepatitis C virus in thalassemia has raised concerns of ribavirin-induced hemolysis and increased iron loading. WNV infection can cause meningoencephalitis (MNE) and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). Both syndromes are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Interferon alpha-2b (IFN-alpha-2b) inhibits WNV replication in vitro. To date, 5 patients with WNV-CNS disease have recovered neurologic function with IFN-alpha-2b.
