Behavioral addictions and their reciprocal associations with each other, substance use disorders, and mental health problems: Findings from a longitudinal cohort study of young Swiss men.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The co-occurrence of behavioral addictions (BAs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) or other mental health problems (MHPs) is well documented. However, there is limited evidence on associations between changes in the severity of BAs, SUDs, and MHPs, or their directions of influence or causation. METHODS: A non-self-selecting sample of 5,611 young Swiss men (mean age 25.5 at baseline and 28.3 at follow-up) completed a self-reporting questionnaire on various BAs (gambling, gaming, internet, internet pornography, smartphone, work), SUDs (alcohol, cannabis) and MHPs (major de

Off-label GLP-1 weight-loss medicine use among online bodybuilders: Folk pharmacology, risk and harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: GLP-1 medicines (e.g. Semaglutide; Tirzepatide) are diabetes medicines that have recently been approved for weight loss purposes. These drugs are increasingly common, with many users accessing these medicines for off-label lifestyle-oriented purposes. While recent research has explored increased interest in these drugs, to date no studies have explored their use in bodybuilding cultures. With bodybuilders often at the forefront of experimental drug use, and diffusing knowledge of drugs to other populations, this research examines bodybuilders' understandings of use and risk of GLP-

A Qualitative Evaluation of an Online Expert-Facilitated Course on Tobacco Dependence Treatment.

Qualitative evaluations of courses prove difficult due to low response rates. Online courses may permit the analysis of qualitative feedback provided by health care providers (HCPs) during and after the course is completed. This study describes the use of qualitative methods for an online continuing medical education (CME) course through the analysis of HCP feedback for the purpose of quality improvement. We used formative and summative feedback from HCPs about their self-reported experiences of completing an online expert-facilitated course on tobacco dependence treatment (the Training Enhanc

Exploring the "active ingredients" of an online smoking intervention: a randomized factorial trial.

INTRODUCTION: Research needs to systematically identify which components increase online intervention effectiveness (i.e., active ingredients). This study explores the effects of 4 potentially important design features in an Internet-based, population-level smoking intervention. METHODS: Smokers (n = 1,865) were recruited from a large health care organization, regardless of readiness to quit. Using a full factorial design, participants were randomized to 1 of the 2 levels of each experimental factor (message tone [prescriptive vs. motivational], navigation autonomy [dictated vs. not], e-mail

Assessing information needs and use of online resources for disease self-management in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a qualitative study.

To explore the information needs of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and their acceptance of online resources and Facebook in particular, as a source of information, interaction, and support among peers. Facing internet fake-medicine and web para-pharmacy in the total absence of official recommendations from medical societies.

PURPOSE: Internet fake information, parapharmacy and counterfeit drugs are a market of hundreds of billion dollars. Misleading internet data decrease patients' compliance to medical care, promote use of questionable and detrimental practices, and jeopardize patient outcome. This is particularly harmful among cancer patients, especially when pain and nutritional aspects are considered. Provision of Web recommendations for the general audience (patients, relatives, general population) from official medical-providers might be useful to outweigh the detrimental internet information produced by non

Internet-based self-help versus one-session exposure in the treatment of spider phobia: a randomized controlled trial.

The authors compared guided Internet-delivered self-help with one session of live-exposure treatment in a sample of spider-phobic patients. A total of 30 patients were included following screening on the Internet and a structured clinical interview. The Internet treatment consisted of five weekly text modules, which were presented on a web page, a video in which exposure was modelled, and support provided via Internet. The live-exposure treatment was delivered in a 3-hr session following a brief orientation session. The main outcome measure was the behavioural approach test (BAT), and as secon
